The convergent annular IB was initially ballistically focused then transformed into a paraxial cylindrical shaped beam and transported in vacuum to a distance >1 m with high efficiency using a combination of a concave toroidal magnetic lens and a straight solenoid. 2D one-particle computer simulations of the IB propagation in the lens/solenoid system supported the optimization of the system parameters.","PeriodicalId":143385,"journal":{"name":"Digest of Technical Papers. This facility is a large flashlamp pump laser (1.8 MJ optical output). CEA and THALES entered into a contract for the design and manufacturing of the pulsed power conditioning system. This PPCS is based on a modular design of 540 modules (450 MJ energy capacitor bank) in order to have a more flexible and safer facility. For the first step of the LMJ program, called /spl Lt/Ligne Integration Laser/spl Gt/ (LIL), one laser chain had been built. This paper describes the evolution of module design for LMJ and the results obtained on the LIL. The overall electrical performance measured meets the requirements.","PeriodicalId":143385,"journal":{"name":"Digest of Technical Papers. This has been done by the application of the singular value decomposition (SVD) method to time-domain data generated by self-consistent, three-dimensional FDTD simulations. This combination of two powerful techniques yields a wealth of information about the internal mode structure, which cannot otherwise be obtained. The TEM mode is dominant throughout the simulator length. The TM/sub 1/ mode dominates over TM/sub 2/, over most of the length. Close to the termination and to the test object, however, the TM/sub 2/ mode becomes stronger. The enhancement near the termination has been explained in terms of the induced current distribution in the resistive sheet and the resulting magnetic field in the vicinity of the termination. The 3-D distribution of instantaneous electric field amplitude near the test object provides a physical picture of this enhancement.","PeriodicalId":143385,"journal":{"name":"Digest of Technical Papers. While the similarities were expected, the differences are rather surprising. The magnetic flux compression generators under consideration are small. Their armature diameters range from 0.95 cm to 2.54 cm. The similarities and differences are discussed using three figures of merit; alpha, magnetic flux efficiency, and energy gain. Experimental information is provided from tests of the small generators.","PeriodicalId":143385,"journal":{"name":"Digest of Technical Papers. The dielectric material is made of many ceramic capacitors in pressurized dry air. The temporal pulse shape is quite interesting for radiography applications using LIVA accelerators. Another more compact driver is designed to be stacked along a tapered cathode stalk. In this latter, the dry air is replaced by an insulating resin. The expected voltage for an assembly of 160 modules is calculated by means of a transmission line code, which is fitted on the experimental results we get with the first transformer driver.","PeriodicalId":143385,"journal":{"name":"Digest of Technical Papers. Data collection using a coaxial test setup terminating into a 50/spl Omega/ load line to simulate a matched impedance system allows very fast risetimes. Transmission line type current sensors and capacitive voltage dividers with temporal resolution of 300 ps provide information about the discharge voltage and current. Steady, DC currents ranging from a few nA with less than 10 kV of applied voltage, to a few /spl mu/A prior to full breakdown are measured using an electrometer. Prebreakdown events are measured with positive and negative charging voltages with respect to ground. Light emission from the discharge is measured using a series of fast photomultiplier tubes, (risetimes 800 ps), that observe positive and negative electrode tips and center of the channel. Preliminary results on self-breakdown (breakdown voltage +44 kV) with a 2.35 mm gap show a DC (seed) current of several hundred nA with prebreakdown spikes of a few mA immediately before final breakdown. Periodicity of the current spikes combined with a general increase in magnitude prior to full breakdown has been observed. Data collection using a negative charging line, with respect to ground with enhanced field at the cathode, indicates current spikes that are typically 25 to 50% faster than spikes using a positive charging line with enhanced field at the anode. Detailed optical diagnostics along with high-speed electrical diagnostics of the pre-breakdown phase will address the physical mechanisms initiating volume breakdown.","PeriodicalId":143385,"journal":{"name":"Digest of Technical Papers. In the simplest geometry of such an antenna-amplifier, an annular beam propagates outside a dielectric rod antenna, and the drive signal is in the fundamental non-axisymmetric HE/sub 11/ mode. We present the first antenna-amplifier simulation results obtained using the 3-D version of the MAGIC particle-in-cell (PIC) code. Gain and beam bunching have been demonstrated for an X-band signal entering into the system in the TE/sub 11/, mode of a circular waveguide. The linear amplifier response was observed as well as saturation at increased interaction length. In addition, the effects of the generation of harmonics of the main frequency, found earlier in one-dimensional modeling, have been verified. Furthermore, the possibility of controlling the harmonic content in the output spectrum by means of input frequency variation, also studied earlier in 1-D simulations, has been confirmed. As the frequency changes within the amplification band, the output power remains the same, and spectral peaks shift to the new frequency and its harmonics, but the harmonic content in the spectrum changes significantly.","PeriodicalId":143385,"journal":{"name":"Digest of Technical Papers. The high field, long absorption depth package reduces the required linear mode, optical closure energy and also reduces the conduction current density through the active material and at the contacts. In addition, the long absorption depth package increases the area available for thermal management and in concert with the reduced current density should increase the lifetime of the switch. The set up employs a cable discharge into a coaxial system with axial discharge and load line to simulate matched terminating impedance. A unique feed-through design creates no discontinuities in the system lines through the discharge chamber. The impedance of the system is matched at 50 ohms including a novel design for impedance matching transitions from discharge cable to coaxial system to load line allowing for a sub-nanosecond response. This paper presents results on self-breakdown with voltages of up to 60 kV. Self-breakdown is achieved by charging the discharge cable and load line to +/-30 kV respectively. Transmission line type current sensors and a capacitive voltage divider with fast amplifiers/attenuators are used in order to obtain a complete range of information from amplitudes of 0.1 mA to 1 kA with temporal resolutions of 300 ps. Optical measurements include high speed photography and shadowgraphy.
