Before flashover, the ohmic current was observed for unetched samples and the space charge limited (SCL) current for etched samples, respectively. Meanwhile both samples showed quite different flashover tracks. It was believed that all the phenomena were due to their different density and distribution of surface states. A new model was proposed to describe the development process of surface flashover along semiconductor, i.e., the thermal effect and subsequently the current filament with the applied voltage. It was suggested that the flashover phenomena occurred in the interface layer of silicon butted to electrodes and in its lateral layer near to the ambient.","PeriodicalId":143385,"journal":{"name":"Digest of Technical Papers. The proposed generator is designed with boost converter array that has series-connected capacitors and IGBTs. The generator easily obtains high voltage pulse without any high voltage pulse transformer and high voltage dc source. Thus, the proposed circuit not only eliminates the high frequency transformer but also can operate up to several kHz along with high reliability and longer life. The DQE is also an important factor in figures-of-merit used to compare the performance of various radiographic machines and experimental setups. A simple expression is derived for the DQE of a storage-phosphor imaging plate (SPIP) and it is calculated as a function of the incident X-ray energy. The results are compared with measured data acquired from exposing the SPIP to Co/sup 60/ gamma radiation. Among them the low sterilization temperature and high efficiency should be mentioned. The most promising method seems to be sterilization with the pulse-periodic diffuse discharge. For the study of the diffuse discharge initiation an experimental equipment has been developed which included gas-discharge chambers with various electrode systems and the high voltage pulse-periodic generator. The common feature of all electrode systems is their ability to form highly nonuniform electric fields. The pulse-periodic source has been developed on the basis of a pulsed transformer and a high voltage block for the formation of nanosecond pulses with the amplitude up to 120 kV and front duration up to 10 ns. The discharge electric power supply system includes a direct voltage bias. The diffuse discharge was exited in the pressure range from 1.3 kPa to 26.7 kPa, its volume was up to 20 dm/sup 3/. The discharge parameters are dependent on the air pressure in the chamber, the discharge gap configuration and the generator pulse amplitude. The essential role of the bias voltage was observed. The demand of ozone increases for for wholesome and environment-friendly sterilizations. The production of ozone using the pulsed power discharge applies the electron accelerations around the head of streamer discharge. The breakdowns in reactor, however, often limit the efficient production. The pulse shape should be controlled for dimension of the reactor. On the other hand, the narrow reactor is preferable to obtain high energy density in the discharge region. It is clear that a pulse shortening is one of the effective approaches. The nanosecond pulsed power voltage applies for ozone production. The short pulse is generated from a combination of a short pulse forming line and short gas switch with high pressure, and supplies to the reactor with a wire-to-cylinder configuration. The effects of the pulse shape, dimension and configuration of the reactor and flow rate of oxygen gas on ozone production are discussed here. Little is known about AC and DC surface flashover in normal atmospheric pressures and temperatures. A greater general understanding of this phenomenon is needed to design modern energy systems with a higher tolerance for this failure process. Flashover in the past been has shown to occur primarily at a junction between the insulator, conducting medium and air which is known as the triple point. The focus of this initial study is on the adverse effects that AC and DC flashover have on conductive thin film geometry. The thin film is metallized polypropylene and is cut into strips measuring 12\" X 3/4\" to be representative of long path flashover in contaminated energy systems. Each strip of thin metallized film is then subjected to a voltage pulse of 2500 V/sub ac/dc/. Preliminary results have shown a significant difference of output energy from a pulsed AC to a pulsed DC configuration. The AC configuration yields more intense flashes of light as compared to the DC application. Upon further investigation, the conformity of the AC flashover remained consistent as voltage and film length were scaled down linearly in stages to 150 V/sub ac/ and 3/4\" respectively. The DC configuration, when scaled down, did not experience any flashover at low voltages. These initial studies are to be extended in the future by developing a valid model to explain these significant phenomena.","PeriodicalId":143385,"journal":{"name":"Digest of Technical Papers. In the case of a surge current, it flows along the surface of the conducting fuselage and disperses around the circumference. A portion of the surge current also penetrates through the fuselage of the aircraft (by diffusion) resulting in transient EM fields inside the fuselage that results in EM interference with on-board electronics. In a high current laboratory, an aluminum test cylinder, representative in size and construction of an aircraft fuselage, was subjected to high surge currents, up to 15 kA. This has forced researchers and engineers to search for new opportunities for prevention terrorist activities. The paper reports on the possibilities of using various pulsed power technologies for disruption of shaped-charge jets (SCJ). This problem is especially urgent for the protection of objects whose damage can result in environmental disasters. The results from theoretical and experimental studies of SCJ disruption and reduction of jet penetration into various targets using electric pulsed power sources are analyzed. The antenna pattern width by half-power is 100/spl deg/ for the H-plane and 105/spl deg/ for the E-plane. Evolution of compression of wire array has been studied with radiation 2D MHD code.
