Total phenol and flavonoid contents were determined spectophotometrically using Folin-Ciocalteu and AlCl 3 reagents, respectively. The antioxidant activity of the methanolic extracts was examined by DPPH method. The total phenol contents ranged from 137 mg GAE/g DW (in Bouiblan) to 191 mg GAE/g DW (in Tizrag). The total flavonoid contents ranged from 11 mg QE/g (in Bouiblan) to 28 mg QE/g (in Tizrag). The highest antioxidant activity was noticed in Tizrag and the lowest was noticed in Bouiblan. These results showed a positive correlation between phenols, flavonoids and antioxidant activity. Comparison between the Middle and the High Atlas stands showed significant differences between stands. The Middle Atlas stands are statistically close but those of the High Atlas are statistically different.","PeriodicalId":14019,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants","volume":"7 1","pages":"42-54"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84382020","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The barks of these plants were screened for their phytochemicals and their bioactivity activity against some clinical pathogenic microorganisms. Results of the phytochemical screening showed that tha a queous, methanolic and ethanolic extracts of the barks of the plants contain saponins, tannins, basalms, glycosides, steriods, terpenoids and flavonoids. The antimicrobial susceptibility test showed that bark extracts of Khaya senegalensis and Tamarindus indica had varying inhibition strength on the test organisms. The aqueous, ethanolic and methanolic extracts of Khaya senegalensis had the highest zone of inhibition on three of the isolates which were; Pseudomonas 27853, Klebsiella pneumonia and Escherichia coli (Carbapenem-resistant strain). While the aqueous, ethanolic and methanolic extracts of Tamarindus indica barks inhibited Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus 4330, Klebsiella pneumonia and Echerichia coli (non-carbapenem strain). The minimum inhibitory concentration of the bark extracts ranged from 400mg/ml to 25mg/ml. There was no minimum bactericidal concentration observed from the extracts. Antibiotics susceptibility test using standard antibiotics indicated multidrug resistance by the test organisms which Ceftriaxone (CRO) 30µg and Cefepime (FEP) 30µg elicited inhibitory activity against Carbapenem-resistant pseudomonas species, Pseudomonas aerigunosa ATCC 27853, and Echerichia coli (non- carbapenem strain) respectively. The result of this study, therefore suggest the possibility of using Khaya senegalensis and Tamarindus indica extracts as antimicrobial agents, which can be a great asset to drug development for purpose of health care delivery in Nigeria.","PeriodicalId":14019,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants","volume":"18 1","pages":"29-41"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84005215","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present study was planned to estimate the variability among morpho-economic traits, to estimate magnitude of association between essential oil yield and its contributing traits and to determine the direct and indirect effects of various agro-morphic traits on essential oil yield. Experimental materials consist of twenty-nine accessions, which were evaluated for two consecutive years (2016-2017 and 2017-2018) in a randomized complete-block design (RCBD) with two replications. Data were collected on agro-morphic traits and essential oil yield. The results revealed that, the plant height was ranged from 72 cm (MASP-20) to 31cm (MASP-2), herb yield per plot was ranged from 1.83 kg/plot (MASP-13) to 4.36 kg/plot (MASP-12), and essential oil yield was varied from 0.118 kg/plot (MASP-1) to 0.698 kg/plot (MASP-12).The menthol percent was varied from 0.13% (MASP-15) to 73.19 % (MASP-24),menthyl acetate 25.52% (MASP-29) to 0.030% (MASP-18), pulegone 0 % to 75.00% (MASP-22), and limonene was varied from 0.24 %(MASP-29) to 24.89% (MASP-27).The significant and positive association was noticed between essential oil yield and herb yield per plot (0.82**; ** = significant at 1% probability level) and number of branches per plant (0.26*; *= significant at 5% probability level). Among the chemical constituents of essential oil, Limonene percent was positively and significantly correlated with pulegone percent. The path coefficient analysis revealed that herb yield per plot had the highest direct effect on essential oil yield (0.8104). Plant height, number of branches per plant, and herb yield per plot can be used as a selection criterion during selection to develop a high yielding menthol mint chemotypes.","PeriodicalId":14019,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants","volume":"51 1","pages":"1-16"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86692230","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Quantification of secondary metabolites like total phenol, flavonoid, and H 2 O 2 content was carried out on both hexane and ethanol extracts. The antimicrobial activity was carried out on the ethanolic leaf extract against standard Ciprofloxacin. The ethanolic leaf extract of the sample showed more compromising results than that of the hexane extract. The flavonoid content and the phenol content is said to be more in the ethanol extract than that of the hexane extract. The H 2 O 2 content also came out to be more in the ethanol extract. The Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometer of the ethanolic extract of the leaf sample revealed about 25 compounds with Formamide, n,ndimethyl showing the highest peak area. The antimicrobial activity of the leaf sample of the ethanolic extract showed more activity. The present study revealed that Bruguiera gymnorrhiza can be used as a potential drug and furthers studies are required on it.","PeriodicalId":14019,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants","volume":"45 1","pages":"17-28"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85839764","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Host animals were treated at the ear pinna (by smearing the oil directly on the ear or suspending a tube containing the oil on the ear pinna) and legs + tail in semi-field plots. The legs + tail sites of the essential oil application showed the lowest mean percentage of ticks observed on host body (16.5 ± 1.9% and 26.0 ± 2.8%) and the highest mean percentage reduction of attaching ticks (76.5 ± 3.9% and 67.0 ± 0.8%) for essential oils of Tagetes minuta and Tithonia diversifolia, respectively. The control animals had the highest mean percentage of ticks observed (93.0 ± 2.1%). The ear tube resulted in the highest mean percentage of ticks on the host (47.5 ± 5.1% and 55.8 ± 5.1%) and a lowest mean percentage reduction of attaching ticks (44.8 ± 5.1% and 36.5 ± 7.4%) for the essential oils of Tagetes minuta and Tithonia diversifolia, respectively. For both the essential oils, legs + tail sites of essential oil application, followed by ear smear and then ear tube, had significant effects on orientation to the host and attachment site preference of adult R. appendiculatus on the host, in that order. We, therefore, recommend the ear smear site for treating hosts with essential oils whose performance may improve upon increasing concentration and formulating them in a carrier material that stabilizes the active ingredients.","PeriodicalId":14019,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants","volume":"15 1","pages":"55-71"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73234049","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many essential oil components and plant secondary metabolites are known to possess broad spectrum antimicrobial activity, including against antibiotic resistant bacteria. These compounds may be a useful source of new and novel antimicrobials. However, there is limited research on the structure-activity relationship (SAR) of essential oil compounds, which is important for a target identification and lead optimization. Quantitative Structure Activity Relationships (QSAR or SAR) have helped scientists to establish mathematical relationships between molecular structures and their biological activities. This study aimed to elucidate SARs of essential oil components from experimental and literature sources. Minimum Inhibitory Concentrations (MICs) of essential oil components were collected against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus and then compared to those published in literature for identify or predict the best model for describing the antibacterial activity of new biologically active agents in the plant.","PeriodicalId":14019,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants","volume":"14 1","pages":"85-91"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86235579","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its etiology is multifactorial. BPH is associated with annoying symptoms and morbid complications. The treatment of BPH with drugs, or synthetic chemicals, damages hepatic and renal tissues developing cirrhosis and kidney failure. As an alternative, there has been recourse to the use of medicinal plants or natural health. Pumpkin seeds, nettle leaves and soybeans have been proven to be potent against pain and discomfort in BPH patients. Moreover, plants used at high doses during a long period as treatment, may be toxic and complicate the lifestyle of BPH patients. Both, drugs and plants, used without precaution is a dilemma of prevention and toxicity. The patients simultaneously consume the drug and plants to anticipate healing. Combined drug-plant therapy could have harmful effects on health due to an accumulating antagonistic synergy of chemical and natural.","PeriodicalId":14019,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants","volume":"2004 1","pages":"92-104"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86263875","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
