It was submitted to biological assay to determine the anti-inflammatory and leishmanicidal potential. Anti-inflammatory effect was determined on acute (12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate -TPA- and Carragenan models) and chronic inflammatory models (induce with Complet Freud´s Adjuvant -CFA-) using Indomethacin and Phenylbutazone (PBZ) as reference drugs. In vitro leishmanicidal activity was determined on Leishmania mexicana promastigotes and amastigotes, Miltefosine and amphotericin B were used as reference drugs. In TPA assay, LuAc showed an ED50=1.79 mg/ear (Ind, ED50=0.91 mg/ear) and on Carragenan model, the antiinflammatory effect was not dose-dependent, in this case LuAc at 100, 150 and 250 mg/kg showed 43.31, 40.22 and 51.25% of inhibition, respectively at 5 h. On CFA chronic inflammatory model, LuAc and PBZ groups showed similar anti-inflammatory effect and similar Body Weight (BW) gain although this value was less respect to healthy and CFA groups. Also, inhibited the COX-2 activity being this effect slightly better that PBZ, and the joints and soft tissue from LuAc and PBZ groups did not show any alteration with respect to CFA group. In soft tissue, CFA group showed a significant increase size and leukocyte infiltrate as a result of the chronic inflammatory process; it group also showed sinusoidal hyperplasia in the joint. In liver histological analysis, the healthy and LuAc groups showed no alteration, and the CFA group showed a slight microabscess and scarce hematopoiesis, while the PBZ group presented scarce steatosis. The fraction (rich in LuAc) and LuAc pure were less active that extract against L. mexicana promastigotes. C. tehuacanesis is a potential source of LuAc. This natural compound showed a good anti-inflammatory activity (similar effect to PBZ) and did not cause liver damage.","PeriodicalId":14019,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants","volume":"117 1","pages":"1-11"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83687299","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Objective: The goal of this study was to investigate the effects of different drying processes on properties of CN. Methods: Air dried (ADDCM) and oven dried (ODDCM) leaves were extracted using the dichloromethane (DCM) Soxhlet extraction method. Antioxidant activity of the extracts was measured using the 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging assay. The chemical profile of the extracts was determined using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis, and the antiproliferative activity was tested using MCF-7 (breast cancer) and MCF- 10A (normal breast) cell lines and the Sulphoromide B assay. Results: The percentage of scavenging ability was 12.354 ± 0.003% and 13.151 ± 0.009% for ADDCM and ODDCM, respectively, with r2 values of 0.969 and 0.968. The total content of DPPH scavenging radicals in the ADDCM and ODDCM extracts significantly correlated with their trolox relaxation effects (r2 >0.9, p<0.05). GC-MS identified 89 major phytochemical compounds present in both extracts. The antiproliferative effects of both extracts on MCF-7 cells were dose dependent. No antiproliferative effect was detected for MCF-10A cells. Conclusion: Both extracts exhibited free radical scavenging activity, but the ADDCM extract contained a greater amount of chemical compounds. Additionally, the DCM extracts showed selective antiproliferative activity against MCF-7 but not MCF-10A.","PeriodicalId":14019,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants","volume":"10 1","pages":"1-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89715212","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The experiment was done in different agro-ecologies of Ethiopia at Wondogenet and Hawassa and Qoqa by using randomized complete block design with three replications. Data on agronomic and economical traits were collected for two years from 2012 to 2013 and statistically analyzed by analysis of variance using SAS PROC GLM (2002) at P<0.05. Differences between means separated using the least significance difference test at P<0.05. The overall respective mean performance across the test locations varied from 87.13-131.4 cm, 18.8-66.83, 43.93-72.17, 95.93-159.69 g, 19.41-33.59 g, 58.7-98.06 g, 5.87-9.88 g, 2.66-4.44 ton, 5.39-9.33 ton, 16.30-27.50 ton, 1.63-2.75 ton for plant height; number of branches/plant; number of pods per plant; pod yield/plant; dry seed yield/ plant; fresh calyx yield/plant; dry calyx yield/plant; pod yield/hectare; dry seed yield/hectare, fresh calyx yield/ hectare, dry calyx yield /hectare respectively. The highest value for all this parameter were recorded at Hawassa; and the lowest value were recorded at Qoqa for plant height and number of branch /plant and Wondogenet for the other parameter and Jamican type was highly preformed than Sudan type. Therefore, these variations are due to fluctuating features of the environmental factors and the two types of hibiscus were adapted well over the testing locations and years. In our study, nitrogen application at three levels and a tester was used, and effects on quantity and essential oil characteristics were recorded. The purpose was to explore nitrogen effects on essential oil of basil in Greece. Two commercial cultivars of basil were used: Red Rubin and Lettuce Leaf. The experiment conducted was a replicated fully randomized complete block split-split plot with the two varieties as the main factor, split factor was nitrogen levels (four rates) and split in time factor was sampling time (six dates). Nine characteristics were studied (chlorophyll content measurements-CCM, foliar surface, plant height, fresh weight, dry weight, leaves/stems ratio for fresh weight, leaves/stems ratio for dry weight, essential oil content of flowers and essential oil content of leaves). Basil plants were generally favoured by nitrogen application and many characteristics were improved. Especially for foliar surface, chlorophyll content, plant height and biomass weight (for both cultivars). Red Rubin exploited better nitrogen application in comparison to Lettuce leaf, especially for the second level. On the opposite, Lettuce leaf showed better essential oil production. The two cultivars differed also in the composition of essential oils with impact on essential oil properties. Finally, the biological cycle was accelerated for both cultivars because of increased metabolism after nitrogen application. Genotype × environment interaction was present in many cases, except for foliar surface, leaves/stem ratio and essential oil content of leaves.","PeriodicalId":14019,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants","volume":"1 1","pages":"1-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77316286","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
