This study sought to assess the economic impact of plantain ripening among traders in three satellite markets of Accra. Using the interview technique, primary data was obtained from 320 respondents within 3 satellite markets. Ripening was found to increase the market value of plantain whereas over-ripening reduced the market value of plantain. Money to the tune of over two million cedis (one hundred and seventy-four thousand dollars) was lost by weekly plantain retailers and suppliers in the three satellite markets. Poor road network and market environment were the key causes of postharvest of plantain amongst traders in the 3 satellite markets. Two identified solution gaps that can curb the accrued loss along the plantain supply chain include the provision of tailored business development services to plantain traders and the development of marketable food applications of over-ripe plantain that advances the circular economy agenda.","PeriodicalId":14014,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Fruit Science","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135725426","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aims to explore the effects of pre-harvest spraying with different concentrations of CaCl2, amino acid calcium, and sugar alcohol calcium on the quality of Chinese cherry and the expression of genes related to cell wall softening. The goal is to identify suitable calcium-based agents for pre-harvest spraying on Chinese cherry. The results of the study demonstrated that all three exogenous calcium treatments significantly increased the mineral content compared to the control group. Moreover, these treatments also led to a significant increase in various fruit quality parameters such as hundred fruit weight, firmness, soluble solid, soluble sugar, titratable, vitamin C, soluble protein, β-Carotene content and superoxide dismutase, peroxidase activities. Additionally, they were found to effectively reduce rot rate, polyphenol oxidase activity, malondialdehyde content and relative conductivity. The activity of pectin methylesterase, polygalacturonase, cellulase and β-galactose was reduced by amino acid calcium and sugar alcohol calcium. All three types of exogenous calcium down-regulated the expression of PME and ChCaBP1. Additionally, amino acid calcium and sugar alcohol calcium decreased the expression of PG, Cx, and BGal. Exogenous calcium reduces the size of stomata in the fruit epidermis, leading to a decrease in both fruit respiration rate and transpiration. Of the three calcium preparations, amino acid calcium and sugar alcohol calcium were more effective than CaCl2, with 0.12 g·L−1sugar alcohol calcium and 0.06 g·L−1 amino acid calcium being the most effective.","PeriodicalId":14014,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Fruit Science","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136261921","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Strawberry (Fragaria ananassa) is prone to rapid decay after harvest. Aloe Vera Gel (AVG) provides antioxidants that help prevent rapid ripening; however, its hydrophilic nature can reduce the effectiveness of the coating. On the other hand, Carnauba wax (CWP) could decrease water vapor permeability and has not been previously used for strawberries. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the coating formed by different concentrations of AVG with CWP microparticles. The samples were immersed in the coating for different times, lyophilized and analyzed in the scanning electron microscope, with different resolutions, to establish the experimental conditions and confirmed the formation of the layer on the surface. A Completely Random Design was applied, with a 32 factorial arrangement: AVG (0%, 30%, 45% v/v) and CWP (0%, 0.3%, 0.4% w/v). Three repetitions and 27 experimental runs were carried out. The treatments that presented the best physicochemical and microbiological conditions were analyzed sensorially. The treatments with higher concentrations of the two components provided the least change in weight loss, pH, and ripening index (p ≤ .05), and the lowest values of the severity index caused by Botrytis cinerea. The coated samples were well accepted sensorially, with no significant difference with the uncoated strawberries (p > .05). The proposed coatings have the potential to extend the shelf life of strawberries and be applied in the fruit marketing chain.","PeriodicalId":14014,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Fruit Science","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136314082","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
