Thus, the shelf-life, quality, and marketability of these fruits is reduced rapidly. One of the most important postharvest technology used to reduce the effect of exogenous and endogenous ethylene and extend the shelf-life of climacteric fruits is 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP). Currently, the application of 1-MCP on certain climacteric fruits is not commercially feasible due to the variable effects associated with this technology. In this review, factors that influence 1-MCP efficacy in climacteric fruits such as fruit maturity, concentration, genotypes, storage temperature and atmospheres, packaging material and application timing are critically discussed. In addition, current techniques used to mitigate the 1-MCP variability such as combined application with other postharvest treatments are briefly described and discussed. This review will provide an important information on the utilization of 1-MCP to prolong shelf-life in various climacteric fruits and help in the development of protocols for unregistered genotypes.","PeriodicalId":14014,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Fruit Science","volume":"37 3 1","pages":"595 - 607"},"PeriodicalIF":2.4,"publicationDate":"2022-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74422228","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The samples were evaluated for solid content (SSC), total phenols, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and protease. Antioxidant capacity was determined using four assays: 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2’-azimo-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), hydroxyl radical (HR) scavenging rate and superoxide anion radical (SAR) scavenging rate. In the process of fermentation, the antioxidant and enzyme activities of artificial fermentation kiwifruit products were significantly higher than those of natural fermentation (p < .05). At the end of fermentation, the contents of total phenols and SSC in the fermented products of Hongyang kiwi fermentation (HKF) group and Cuiyu kiwi fermentation (CKF) group were significantly decreased, while the antioxidant properties of DPPH, ABTS, HR and SAR were significantly increased compared with the fresh kiwi (p < .05). In addition, the content of protease and superoxide dismutase was also increased. It was also found that the antioxidant properties and the enzyme activities in the HKF group were higher than those in the CKF group. ABTS and SOD activities were more obvious, which were 1.42 times and 2.22 times of the CKF, respectively. HKF group showed better nutritional properties and biological activities.","PeriodicalId":14014,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Fruit Science","volume":"86 1","pages":"860 - 871"},"PeriodicalIF":2.4,"publicationDate":"2022-11-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85315531","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In 2016, bacterial wilt was discovered in Florida blueberry production. Because of the international movement of plants, this disease poses a significant risk to production. The purpose of this project was to evaluate the resistance of blueberry species and cultivars to the three genetically distinct populations of Ralstonia identified in Florida blueberry production. Nineteen cultivars/species of Vaccinium were used in this study. Plants were selected from wild, northern, southern, midbush, lowbush, and rabbiteye varieties. Plants were inoculated with three genetically distinct strains of the pathogen, and experiments were replicated three times. Varying levels of quantitative (multigenic) bacterial wilt resistance were observed among varieties tested, with rabbiteye cultivars being the most resistant. These results are similar to bacterial wilt resistance observed in other agronomic crops. We also observed a unique specific qualitative (vertical) resistance in the rabbiteye cultivar ´Ochlockonee’. The pathogen was unable to colonize plant tissue and cause disease on this cultivar. This is the first report of qualitative resistance to Ralstonia solanacearum in blueberry. Both the multigenic and vertical resistance can be incorporated into blueberry breeding programs to mitigate potential losses to bacterial wilt.","PeriodicalId":14014,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Fruit Science","volume":"55 1","pages":"852 - 859"},"PeriodicalIF":2.4,"publicationDate":"2022-11-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73595026","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, using chemical compounds is essential to increase durability and maintain its quality. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of arginine on postharvest quality of sweet cherry fruits. The sweet cherry fruits (Prunus avium L. cv TakDanehe Mashhad) were sprayed with arginine (0, 200, and 400 μM) one month before harvest. Fruits were harvested at commercial maturity stage according to acceptable color standards. After harvest, the fruits were transferred to the laboratory and immediately kept in cold storage with temperature of 1°C with 90–95% relative humidity (RH) for 20 days. The results showed that in treated fruits, electrolyte leakage, active oxygen production, and lipid peroxidation were decreased. The activity of antioxidant enzymes including ascorbate peroxidase, catalase, and superoxide dismutase was increased compared to control. The treated fruits with arginine 400 µM showed the highest enzymatic activity during cold storage. The percentage of chilling injury and fresh weight loss in treated fruits has decreased comparing control fruits. According to the results lowest amount of pH observed in fruits treated with arginine 400 µM. Arginine increased the amount of titratable acid, soluble solids, and vitamin C, as well the firmness of fruits. As short, arginine preharvest treatment at 400 µM concentration improved the postharvest quality of sweet cherry fruits.","PeriodicalId":14014,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Fruit Science","volume":"21 1","pages":"837 - 851"},"PeriodicalIF":2.4,"publicationDate":"2022-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75267205","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Balanagar fruits. In the present experiment, three chemicals viz. oxalic acid (OA) (2.5 mM, 5.0 mM, 7.5 mM, and 10 mM; salicylic acid (SA) (0.5 mM, 1.0 mM, 1.5 mM, and 2.0 mM) and Sodium Nitro Prusside (SNP) at 0.5 mM, 1.0 mM, 1.5 mM, and 2.0 mM along with control were applied. Fruits were stored at ambient condition (Temp. 25 ± 2°C and relative humidity (RH) 44 ± 2%). Results indicated that fruits treated with SNP (2.0 mM) had significantly (p≤ 0.05) higher total soluble solids (30.80°B), titratable acidity (TA) (0.33%) and retained higher total sugar content (TS) (25.09%) at the end of the 9th day of storage. At the end of storage, the least reduction in total phenol content (TPC) (492.52 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/100 g (11.62%) was found in SNP (2.0 mM) treated fruits. Likewise, SNP (2.0 mM) significantly (p≤ 0.05) retained higher ascorbic acid (AA) (43.20 mg/100 g), antioxidant activity (AOX) (0.92 µmol Trolox Equivalent (TE)/g), total flavonoids (TF) (71.49 µg CE/100 g) and tannin content (TC) (1.28 mg/g) compared to control during 9 days of storage. Compared with the control fruit, all three treatments suppressed ethylene production and respiration rate, leading to delayed softening, reduced peel discoloration, and soluble solid content loss. These treatments increased plasma membrane stability by inhibiting lipoxygenase activity and decreasing H2O2, electrolyte leakage, and malondialdehyde concentrations, resulting in higher tolerance to chilling injury (CI). At the end of storage, the CI index of fruit treated with MT, 1-MCP, and MT+1-MCP respectively exhibited 54.67%, 14.57%, and 5.54%, which were significantly lower than the control ones (78.36%). In addition, the phenolics, flavonoids, and ascorbic acid contents were also improved by the above treatments, which contributed to higher antioxidant activity than the control fruit at the late stage of storage. The combination of MT and 1-MCP treatment was more effective in improving the postharvest quality and preserving high antioxidant ability levels than either treatment alone, indicating a promising measure to preserve sweet persimmons up to 70 d.","PeriodicalId":14014,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Fruit Science","volume":"263 1","pages":"809 - 825"},"PeriodicalIF":2.4,"publicationDate":"2022-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77176269","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Even though it is the source of currency, the fruit market has not been given attention. Therefore, this study intended to identify factors influencing avocado producers’ market participation decisions and volume of market participation in the Kaffa zone, Ethiopia. Gimbo and Chena districts were selected purposefully with a multi-stage sampling method on the bases of production potential. Data for this study were collected from 384 households from six representative Kebeles with the Cochran formula. Both primary and secondary data were employed. Primary data was collected using a semi-structured questionnaire. Both descriptive statistics and the double hurdle econometric model were employed for analysis. The descriptive statistics showed that out of 384 households (236 participants and 148 were non-participants), 89.19% were male avocado market participants and 76.69% were male avocado non-market participants. The econometric model results confirmed that market participation decisions (hurdle 1) of producers were significantly influenced by sex, market experience, education level, and family size. The intensity of avocado market participation (hurdle 2) is significantly affected by the market experience, access to credit services, extension contact, family size, and off-farm income. Understanding the factors of both avocado market participation decisions and level of participation helps policymakers to re-adjust their policies both at the regional and federal government levels. Then, this study recommends that governments need to exploit more effort into market-oriented production to enhance the productivity of avocados. Credit providers also must strengthen. Additionally, modern production technologies must be taken into consideration to increase the avocado quantity produced.","PeriodicalId":14014,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Fruit Science","volume":"2003 1","pages":"794 - 808"},"PeriodicalIF":2.4,"publicationDate":"2022-10-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88324654","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":3,"RegionCategory":"农林科学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
