To do this, units containing samples of bacterial and fungal spores were mounted on a support platform attached to the exterior wall of the Russian Zvezda Module of the International Space Station (ISS). After a 15-mon exposure to outer space the samples were returned to Earth. The experiment demonstrated that microbial spores had the capability to survive and remain viable after the exposure to outer space for the time period comparable to the Earth-Mars-Earth mission duration. This finding is not only of theoretical importance but also of practical significance as related to the development of adequate measures of planetary protection for deep space missions.","PeriodicalId":13765,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Bioassays","volume":"30 1","pages":"5616-5622"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86464028","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The effect was evaluated by assessing various behavioural parameters (thermal hyperalgesia, cold hyperalgesia), biochemical parameters (lipid peroxidation, reduced glutathione, superoxide dismutase and catalase). Partial Sciatic nerve ligation (PSNL) significantly caused thermal hyperalgesia, cold hyperalgesia and oxidative damage as compared to normal and sham and group. Upon daily administration of combination of lycopene (50 mg/kg), ketotifen (10mg/kg) and gabapentin (100 mg/kg) considerably reversed hyperalgesia, cold hyperalgesia and also attenuated oxidative stress when compared to PSNL group. The results indicated that combination lycopene, ketotifen and gabapentin exhibited a potentiating effect in neuropathic pain by inhibiting degranulation of mast cells and also by reducing oxidative stress.","PeriodicalId":13765,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Bioassays","volume":"2 1","pages":"5568-5573"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78323430","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is a thin, triangular eminence, which is flattened from side to side. It varies in shape and size. The shape of coronoid process acts as an evolutionary marker. It is useful in anthropological and forensic studies. This study was undertaken to note the form of presentations of coronoid process and their incidence in the dry adult human mandibles. Method: The present study was conducted in the Department of Anatomy, Yenepoya Medical College, Mangalore. A total of hundred adult human mandibles were included in the study which consisted of 62 male and 38 female mandibles. The shapes of the coronoid processes were studied bilaterally in all the mandibles and the incidence of the shapes were analyzed statistically in both male and female mandibles. Results: Three types of variations in the shape were evident. Triangular, hook shaped and rounded. Hook shaped coronoid process was found in 90 (45%) sides, round shape in 64(32%) sides and triangular in 46 (23%) sides. Conclusion: Knowledge regarding the morphological shapes of the Coronoid process is useful for the maxillofacial surgeons during reconstructive surgeries and can be used as a donor site for sinus augmentation. It is also useful in anthropological studies and in forensic dentistry.","PeriodicalId":13765,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Bioassays","volume":"79 1","pages":"5612-5615"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80002274","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It represents the major source for the potable water which is susceptible to be polluted by different metals. Heavy metals are the most common pollutants in aquatic environment. The present study aimed to evaluate the adverse effect of heavy metals on in liver and kidney tissues of Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) that were collected from El-Kanater El-Khayria and two discharge points (El-Rahawy drain and Kafr El-Zayat industrial area) at Rosetta branch, River Nile, Egypt. During the present study, it was found that concentration of Lead (Pb), Cadmium (Cd), Iron (Fe) and Zinc (Zn) elevated significantly (P<0.05) in livers of fishes living in Rahawy and Kafr El-Zayat with respect to liver of fishes living in water of kanater. No differences observed significantly in concentration of Nickle (Ni), Chromium (Cr), Cobalt (Co) and Copper (Cu). On the other hand, it was noticed that concentration of Pb, Cd, Ni, Fe and Zn increased significantly (P<0.05) in kidney of fishes living in Rahawy and Kafr El-Zayat with respect to kidney of fishes living in water of kanater. There were no significant differences in concentration of Co and Cu. Bioaccumulation of the various heavy metals in liver and kidney tissues of fishes caused different mutagenicity in the native protein and isoenzymes detected electrophoretically. These alterations were represented qualitatively by hiding of the normal bands or appearance of abnormal bands with different relative mobilities and quantities. Moreover, these abnormalities might occur quantitatively by changing quantities of the qualitatively normal bands. The study concluded that presence of the heavy metals with higher concentration could be toxic and affect fishers and other aquatic organisms and this is worrisome in view of the health implications for the population that need fish resources to cover the food requirements.","PeriodicalId":13765,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Bioassays","volume":"1 1","pages":"5645-5651"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91116447","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The deleterious effects of heavy metals such as lead (Pb) on aquatic ecosystems necessitate continuous monitoring of its accumulation in key species since it affords an indication of its impact on organism’s health. In natural waters, the total Pb concentrations range between 0.05 and 10.0 mg/l (Galvin 1996). While the standard recommended a limit for water for consumption range between 0.01 and 0.05 mg/L Pb. In the current study, we exposed juvenile tilapias ( Oreochromis niloticus) to waterborne Pb in five concentrations 0 (control), 0.01, 0.05, 0.25 and 1.25 mg/L Pb, over six weeks period. The present study focused on the bioaccumulation of low to moderate concentrations of Pb while simultaneously assessing the effects of waterborne Pb on O. niloticus feed intake, growth performances, blood plasma  Lysozyme, Immunoglobulin M (IgM), Complement 3 (C3) and Cortisol levels. Results from the present study showed that among the Pb exposed groups a trend emerged, which indicated a high bioaccumulation rate in fish exposed to the lower (0.01, 0.05 and 0.25 mg/L) Pb concentrations. Fish exposed to 0.01 mg/l Pb showed highest accumulation rates, after 2 weeks of exposure, they were able to accumulate muscle Pb level that was equal to the concentration of Pb to which they were exposed. Meanwhile, data showed that fish exposed to 0.05 and 0.25 mg/L waterborne Pb recorded mean muscle Pb levels equal to or above the concentration of Pb to which they were exposed in the 4th week of exposure time. Furthermore, the mean muscle Pb recorded in fish after the 6th week of exposure to 0.01 mg/L waterborne Pb was 6 times above the level of the water concentration, while fish exposed to 0.05 mg/L, 0.25 mg/L and 1.25 mg/L waterborne Pb recorded mean muscle Pb after the 6 th week that was 5, 3 and 2 times above the concentration of Pb in their respective water environment. Compared with the control group no significant difference in C3 activities were observed in fish exposed to 0.01 mg/L, 0.05 mg/L, and 0.25 mg/L Pb; however, as the dose of Pb increased to 1.25 mg/L significant decrease in C3 activity was observed after 4 weeks of exposure when compared with the control group. Additionally, no significant difference in IgM activities was observed in the 0.01 mg/L, 0.05 mg/L and 0.25 mg/L Pb treated groups of fish when compared with the control respectively. However, as the dose of Pb increased to 1.25 mg/L significant decrease in IgM activity was observed after 2 weeks of exposure compared with the control group. Similarly, as the dose of Pb was increased to 1.25 mg/L significant decrease in lysozyme activity was observed after 2 weeks of exposure compared to the control group.
