Preferably, the exercises should include the design and implementation of a control system. Limited resources and a cap on the number of credit hours required for the undergraduate degree make it impossible to offer a laboratory course with every control class in most electrical engineering curricula. We have solved this problem by including a laboratory project in each of our two senior electives. Each project is a comprehensive modeling, analysis, design and implementation of a physical control system. The students are divided into groups and each group must independently complete the design project and submit a formal report summarizing their results and experiences. Each student must submit an individual commentary on the exercise and the experimental results obtained. Student feedback indicates an increased appreciation of the lecture material and an awareness of the limitations of the theory and simulation that was lacking prior to the introduction of laboratory exercises.","PeriodicalId":135969,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Frontiers in Education 1997 27th Annual Conference. Outcomes based engineering education. I. Theory and practice in the derivation of "outcomes". A European historical perspective 基于成果的工程教育。一、“成果”推导的理论与实践。欧洲历史透视

Heywood","doi":"10.1109/FIE.1997.644823","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/FIE.1997.644823","url":null,"abstract":"A brief account of the origins of the \"outcomes\" movement in education is given. It is concluded that there is no real difference between the objectives movement of yesterday and the \"outcomes\" movement of today. Differences between the approaches of Mager and the authors of The Taxonomy of Eductional Objectives are outlined. Some limitations of The Taxonomy from an engineering perspective are illustrated. An alternative approach to the derivation of \"outcomes\", which is based on task analyses of the work engineers do, is described. One of the problems with the The Taxonomy is its semantic structure which many teachers find difficult to internalize. A method enabling teachers to develop their own semantic structure and at the same time acquire ownership is given in this paper it is further argued noted that just as teachers need to \"own\" their \"outcomes\" so to do students. There are many sources of \"outcomes\". Apart from surveys of alumni and task analyses there are valuable sources to be found in learning theory (e.g. how concepts and principles are learnt, cognitive development and higher order thinking). The principle lessons of the past are that curriculum designers tend to generate too many \"outcomes\" which constrain both teachers and students. These cause surface approaches to learning. In order to obtain study in depth it is essential to allow time for assimilation.","PeriodicalId":135969,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Frontiers in Education 1997 27th Annual Conference. At the end of the first year, as they reported at the 1995 FIE, there was no difference in retention between the experimental course and the \"standard\" classes. This paper examines longer term effects. For this study, transcripts for engineering students from the previous study who remained in engineering after 2 1/2 years were examined. It was found that the experimental sections had about 20% higher retention, but this difference is not highly significant. During transcript analysis, some interesting patterns in \"liberal arts\" were observed. It is concluded that more rigor in their freshman engineering courses certainly does not hurt, and might help retention. The authors remain satisfied that they delivered a high quality experience, but the College has not chosen to adopt the approach.","PeriodicalId":135969,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Frontiers in Education 1997 27th Annual Conference. Graduating engineers must be prepared for the quickly changing technical environment they will be entering. Students need an experiential learning environment that provides them with a more intuitive approach to engineering problems, which in turn encourages them to study theory. It is also possible with such an approach to encourage and teach team interaction, which is important in today's industry. This paper focuses on lessons learned helping students learn to take control of their learning environment. Teaching a class interactively can be a challenge; students like familiar things. Interactive learning changes the rules about education students have become accustomed to. This can be a very uncomfortable experience, however once the students understand what is happening, learning the material often becomes fun.","PeriodicalId":135969,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Frontiers in Education 1997 27th Annual Conference. These students were taught in a sequence of five engineering courses in five consecutive semesters, using a variety of instructional methods including extensive collaborative (team-based) learning, routine assignment of open-ended problems and problem formulation exercises, and other techniques designed to address the spectrum of learning styles found in all engineering classes. The students enrolled in the introductory course in the fall 1992 semester were designated as a comparison group. Academic performance and retention data were collected and attitudes and self-confidence levels were assessed for both groups throughout their second, third, and fourth years of college. This paper provides a mostly qualitative summary of the assessment data analyzed so far.","PeriodicalId":135969,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Frontiers in Education 1997 27th Annual Conference. It also discusses how collaborative learning and projects were structured to fit 80 students, the effects of class size on student-to-student interaction and student-to-faculty interactions in and out of the classroom and what modifications were made to the classroom facilities to accommodate these projects. Although there were some detrimental effects accruing to the scale-up, for the most part, student performance was unaffected or slightly improved.","PeriodicalId":135969,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Frontiers in Education 1997 27th Annual Conference. This paper discusses the development, use, distribution, and integration into a curriculum of a set of Web-based software tutorials for undergraduate courses in automatic controls. The purpose of the tutorials is to teach students how to use MATLAB, a popular computation and visualization software package, to analyze and design automatic control systems. The tutorials combine explanatory text with sample MATLAB commands and illustrative plots and graphics, are highly interconnected, and are easily accessible over the WWW.","PeriodicalId":135969,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Frontiers in Education 1997 27th Annual Conference. A basic premise of the authors' research efforts has been that collaborative or group learning, which can be facilitated by anytime/anywhere access to the group communication and work space, is key to achieving superior learning outcomes in this medium. This paper describes some of the major evaluation procedures and results for a recently completed three year project that produced and delivered 26 courses in computer and information science using ALN, to over 1000 students. It focuses on some of the methodological problems and inconsistencies in results that occur in trying to assess the process and outcomes of teaching and learning in ALNs.","PeriodicalId":135969,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Frontiers in Education 1997 27th Annual Conference. The hardware is composed mainly of standard components like MC68332 processor and memory modules. The memory controller and a multiport unit have been designed using VHDL and are realised with EPLDs. The background debug mode facility of the processor enabled the fast and successful development from scratch. The real-time operating system was designed to be lean, yet including sufficient features to solve real world problems. It was developed incrementally using object oriented methods. The requirements, development methodology and experience gained during its development in several undergraduate research projects are described in detail including the specification process, creation of user manuals, testing procedures and benchmarks.","PeriodicalId":135969,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Frontiers in Education 1997 27th Annual Conference.
