By and large, traditional computing curricula produce graduates who are prepared to work alone on small projects that are rarely deployed. If we are to close the gap between the profile of the successful computing practitioner and the profile of the current graduate, some radical changes in curricula must be instituted. This paper describes current improvement efforts that are unfolding and experiences with transferring those efforts into the classroom.","PeriodicalId":135969,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Frontiers in Education 1997 27th Annual Conference. It was designed to help Information Technology students take advantage of the unique problem-solving approaches of science and mathematics. It is part of the ongoing efforts of the NWCET to infuse science and math into Information Technology curricula. The course was designed by Arthur F. Failproof team projects in software engineering courses 软件工程课程中的防故障团队项目

For the last ten years the undergraduate courses have been based on team projects. This structure has advantages: students see immediately the relevance of what they learn, and the team setting leads to a better understanding of what they learn. The projects in the two courses are of different types. In one course the result is the formal specification and design of a software system. In the other, the teams implement such a system, but emphasis is on testing rather than on the implementation itself. The success of each project is guaranteed by making it open-ended. A team establishes a list of priorities that is to ensure that a useful product will have been built by the time the term ends. We discuss the nature of team projects, and our evaluation scheme.","PeriodicalId":135969,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Frontiers in Education 1997 27th Annual Conference. James Clark School of Engineering at the University of Maryland at College Park initiated a reevaluation of the introductory design course in order to increase design in the classroom and to recruit, retain, and graduate more women and underrepresented minorities. The resulting course, ENES 100, has been highly successful. A High School \"Teacher-in-Residence\" program was initiated in 1995. Sue Schwartz, a Physics teacher from Montgomery County's Paint Branch High School began a residency at the School of Engineering to learn and be a partner in the first year Introduction to Engineering Design course. Throughout the two semesters she actively participated in 4 sections of the course and interacted with all aspects of the freshman program. A major outcome of the interaction was a well defined, detailed, year-long high school curriculum in engineering design. That curriculum has had a pilot test throughout the 1996-97 academic year. The high school curriculum in engineering design and the results of the pilot study is the focus of the presentation.","PeriodicalId":135969,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Frontiers in Education 1997 27th Annual Conference. Design and implementation of a videoconferencing tutorial 一个视频会议教程的设计与实现

{"title":"Design and implementation of a videoconferencing tutorial","authors":"S. Mengel, J. Parikh","doi":"10.1109/FIE.1997.632648","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/FIE.1997.632648","url":null,"abstract":"The tutorial described in this paper takes the user through the installation of the CU-SeeMe videoconferencing package, used at several universities and elementary schools, developed at Cornell University, USA. The tutorial can be used for networking classes or by anyone wanting to install and use CU-SeeMe. Since the tutorial was designed and implemented by one of the authors, a graduate student who had not built a tutorial before, it became important to introduce him to the topics of instructional principles, interface design and hypertext characteristics. If he had to find and learn about these topics in isolation, it would have taken him as long or longer to do that as to construct the tutorial. Instead he was able to utilize a hypertext instructional design methodology which took him through those topics in enough detail to enable him to construct a tutorial that is instructional, maintainable, consistent of interface and extensible. Another important time saver for the author was the opportunity to use SIMPLE developed by William M. Marcy and Marion O. Hagler at Texas Tech University. SIMPLE is designed to be easy to learn and use and facilitates the integration of course material into a multimedia package that has the capability to keep track of student movement through a tutorial and student responses to exercises.","PeriodicalId":135969,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Frontiers in Education 1997 27th Annual Conference. The affinity research groups provide a physical setting in a cooperative environment in which undergraduate and graduate college students engage in research. Affinity groups involve students with a wide range of experiences, talents, interests and skill levels, and provide them with an opportunity to deepen their knowledge in a computer science area and to develop skills and strategies that will make them effective leaders and successful in academia and industry. The structured activities that are characteristic of affinity groups facilitate the transfer of knowledge and skills from an academic setting to the workplace. The paper addresses issues in the development of workplace skills, the challenges of the transfer of knowledge and skills and the particular ways in which the affinity group processes take into account what is known about transfer and the development of research, technical and social skills.","PeriodicalId":135969,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Frontiers in Education 1997 27th Annual Conference. Women in engineering: influencing equity 工程领域的女性:影响公平

Fitzgerald","doi":"10.1109/FIE.1997.644796","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/FIE.1997.644796","url":null,"abstract":"Summary form only given. Statistics continue to demonstrate the lack of equal representation of women graduating with engineering degrees, and, concomitantly of women engineers, engineering managers and university engineering faculty in the US workforce. This presentation looks at statistics on women through the length of the \"engineering pipeline\" and the factors that influence their entry into and journey through that pipeline. Special focus is placed on the importance of role models, especially on the different needs they fulfil for women at different stages of their education and careers. Evidence indicates that decisions made at these key junctures-whether or not to enter or stay in an engineering degree program, whether or not to pursue an advanced engineering degree, whether or not to be a practicing engineer-may be influenced by different factors at different stages. An expanded definition of \"role model\" is explored. While role models are needed to prove to younger women that \"women can do anything\", they are also needed to bring about the cultural changes that will help bring more women behind them through the pipeline.","PeriodicalId":135969,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Frontiers in Education 1997 27th Annual Conference. Material used in the course has been produced and developed by the TIDEE (Transferable Integrated Design in Engineering Education) coalition, an NSF sponsored project with principal investigators at Washington State University, Tacoma Community College and the University of Washington. The course develops creative problem solving techniques, communication and teamwork skills. It emphasizes process improvement rather than evaluating the product and results. This provides an opportunity for students to take risks, try new approaches and gain confidence.","PeriodicalId":135969,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Frontiers in Education 1997 27th Annual Conference.
