A strategy similar to Recovery mode, named \"Buffer\" strategy, has been successfully implemented and experimentally tested for an aeronautical 4-modules interleaved DC/DC converter, where typical voltages at the converter terminals are 28V and 270V, and military standards must be respected to avoid Power Quality impairments. Thus, a variant of this strategy in the automotive application area will be investigated in this paper.","PeriodicalId":134818,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Electric Vehicle Conference","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134418195","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents a distributed and collaborative residential-level power grid management application to alleviate the need of costly infrastructure upgrade. The application is designed to be hosted in our in-house developed network-as-automation platform (NAP) technology where most of the control functionalities may be moved onto the networking devices. Moreover, we have adapted a service-oriented software engineering principle to achieve scalability, autonomous, and architecture agnostic properties for the residential-level EV charging. We demonstrate a functional prototype where off-the-shelf networking devices capable to host a Linux Operating system are used to showcase the NAP technology. Furthermore, we developed a web-based user interface that may be accessible from any standard computing device, e.g. iPhone, to monitor the runtime operation of this application.","PeriodicalId":134818,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Electric Vehicle Conference","volume":"137 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132787409","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

HEV is intended to achieve either better fuel economy than a conventional vehicle, or better performance. HEVs have been gaining popularity given that they are an effective solution to reducing fuel consumption and emissions. However, its potential in fuel economy is hardly fully explored by existing control strategies based on engineering intuition. Dynamic programming (DP) technique is an effective tool to find the globally optimal use of multiple energy sources over a pre-defined drive cycle. As a global optimizing algorithm, DP ensures to converge to the global optimum. Even though DP is an off-line algorithm, the results can serve as a benchmark to evaluate and improve an existing online algorithm. In this paper, the procedures for implementing DP to three typical HEV powertrains are explained in detail. Also, the cost function of DP is discussed. In the case study of Toyota hybrid system, a simplified vehicle model is given and validated. Then DP is applied to this model and the effect of cost function on fuel economy and battery state of health (SOH) is discussed. Comparing to the simulation results over UDDS cycle obtained from the Prius model in Advisor, the DP results over the same drive cycle shows a 30% potential improvement in overall cost, which converts the electricity cost into fuel cost. In addition, based on the DP results, a lookup table based real-time control strategy is developed. This control strategy results in an improvement of 27% of overall cost, which is very close to the ideal case.","PeriodicalId":134818,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Electric Vehicle Conference","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117037849","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Both the bidirectional DC/DC power converter and its logic control system are designed, and then modeled and simulated in Matlab Simulink environment, along with the whole motorbike power train and mechanical load. In particular, a novel motor thermal control logic has been conceived and developed, to dynamically and automatically fit the power delivered to the motor depending on its actual temperature, according to preset motor maps: like this, motor overheating and burnout risk during the race are avoided, meanwhile the best achievable performance is not prevented. The controller design was conducted to suit the characteristics and the needs of the electric racing motorcycle eCRP 1.4, produced by CRP Technology, which takes part in TTXGP Championship.","PeriodicalId":134818,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Electric Vehicle Conference","volume":"327 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123509095","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The characteristic of the claw pole motor is no use of Dy and Tb which can increase torque capability. The filed excitation which can be generated by controlling filed current in a rotor provides us controllable efficiency. Additional ferrite magnets are installed between the rotor poles for the purpose of increasing torque capability due to moderating magnetic saturation of each claw. There are two methods for PEVs to provide ancillary services call interruptible load and vehicle to grid The contract market is introduced first, then the method to calculate the cost benefit of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) to provide ancillary services are proposed. Additionally, the expected profits and profits of providing the ancillary services when considering the uncertainties of driving behaviors are both calculated and compared. The calculation results indicate that profits of participating in frequency regulation are higher than that of reserve services. When penalty is neglected or the penalty coefficient is low, the revenue of regulation down services is relatively high. However, with the increasing of penalty factor, the profits decrease dramatically. When the penalty coefficient is sufficiently high, participating in regulation up services in V2G mode is most profitable.","PeriodicalId":134818,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Electric Vehicle Conference","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125477082","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although the energy density in batteries has continuously been evolving, they can be easily damaged by the peak current or steep variation of current. In order to overcome this weakness, an active battery/supercapacitor (SC) Hybrid Energy Storage System (HESS) has been proposed. The major problem concerning an active HESS in EV is in how to control the current flow in order to minimize the magnitude/ fluctuation of the current flowing in and out of the battery of EV. It is well known that future load profiles can be used to obtain more optimal control of current flow in EV. However, it is difficult to acquire the accurate load profiles because the vehicle movement relies on many factors, e.g., the traffic on the road or the driving pattern of a driver. In this paper, we propose an optimization framework for computing the sub-optimal current flow of the HESS in EV although the future load profile is not precise. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can efficiently minimize the magnitude/fluctuation of the battery current in EV.","PeriodicalId":134818,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Electric Vehicle Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129025586","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The station consists of a single grid-connected inverter with a DC bus where the electric vehicles are connected. The control of the individual electric vehicle charging processes is decentralized, while a separate central control deals with the power transfer from the AC grid to the DC bus. The electric power exchange does not rely on communication links between the station and vehicles, and a smooth transition to vehicle-to-grid mode is also possible. Design guidelines and modeling are explained in an educational way to support implementation in Matlab/Simulink. Simulations are performed in Matlab/Simulink to illustrate the behavior of the station. The results show the feasibility of the model proposed and the capability of the control system for fast DC charging and also vehicle-to-grid.","PeriodicalId":134818,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Electric Vehicle Conference","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128948488","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Electric vehicles (EVs) have a much shorter driving range than comparable gasoline-powered vehicles, and without charging capabilities away from the depot, an EV's route length is constrained by its battery capacity. This is especially problematic if customers are located far from the depot, since it may not be possible to visit a customer and return to the depot on a single charge. Because public charging access is not usually available for EVs, the fleet owner may need to install or rent charging stations away from the depot for the EVs to use.","PeriodicalId":134818,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE International Electric Vehicle Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128984254","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
