The need for better image processing techniques has lead to the emergence of many approaches and techniques, which aim to achieve faster, cheaper and more user-friendly operations. Multiscale analysis for edge detection is a powerful approach to image recognition. However, this approach suffers huge computational and time cost which, consequently, jeopardise its efficiency. This paper presents a new technique in image processing that aims to reduce high computational cost, to provide rapid 3-dimensional objects recognition and has a wide domain of applications. The novel Automatic Edge Detection Scheme (AEDS) combines neural network technology with multiscale analysis, to achieve automatic recognition of high and low contrast images that contain two or three-dimensional objects. The AEDS is based on applying scale space analysis using the Laplacian of a Gaussian edge detection operator, together with a neural network model. This technique will be utilised to detect foetal head and abdominal circumferences. Monitoring the development of a baby during gestation using ultrasound scan, provides vital information on the growth of the foetus and can predict any abnormalities such as Down's syndrome. Providing a fast, user-friendly and low-cost system for the automatic detection, prevents the possibility of human errors in obtaining foetal measurements. An ES is used to learn high-performance reactive behaviour for navigation and collisions avoidance. The learned behaviour is able to solve the problem in a dynamic environment; so, the learning process has proven the ability to obtain generalised behaviours. The robot starts without information about the right associations between sensors and actuators, and, from this situation, the robot is able to learn, through experience, to reach the highest adaptability grade to the sensors information. No subjective information about \"how to accomplish the task\" is included in the fitness function. This paper describes a simple, passive filtering scheme for minimising the harmonic current in the neutral. The double tuned filter has been designed using Rosenbrock's optimisation procedure in order to maximise the third harmonic impedance of the filter and minimise the filter impedance to fundamental frequencies. The filter performance has been confirmed by field tests. This increased applicability is a result of both improved laser technology, and in particular the availability of low cost, high power, semiconductor lasers, and a greater understanding of the way in which laser energy interacts with materials used in soldering. This paper considers the requirements for a typical laser soldering system and the types of laser which may be used, with particular emphasis on the relevant characteristics of semiconductor lasers. It then considers the ways in which laser energy interacts with the different materials used and how heat is transferred within joints. It is shown that an understanding of the heat transfer processes is essential to the successful application of the technique. The influence of the switching devices parameters on the switches voltage distribution during steady- and transient-state conditions are analyzed. It is shown that when ZVS technique is used the design of the voltage equalization elements is easier than when hard switching is used. Simulated results are presented to validate the analysis and design methodology. MMS introduces the concept of a Virtual Manufacturing Device (VMD) providing a common view of all physical devices. Wide spread use of MMS in industrial plants depends heavily on real-time support. This paper presents an approach to the implementation of an MMS server for shop-floor devices that takes into account real-time requirements. Our MMS server has a dynamically reconfigurable software architecture of a Real-Time Control Operating System (RTCOS). It is based on Microware's OS-9 real-time multitasking operating system kernel. In our framework, multiple reconfigurable control sub-systems represent multiple Virtual Manufacturing Devices (VMD). The sub-systems can be developed independently of target driver devices. The work described in this paper was developed in Leonische Portugal Lda, an electric cable supplier for the automobile industry. The staff has decided to buy a sophisticated machine (ARA) that would improve the cutting and crimping operations. On the other hand, the cutting section, where the machine would be installed, presented some problems: a complicated material routing, a problematic material follow-up and an informal quality control system. Such a PWM voltage-type rectifier, equiped with the proposed control strategy, may be used advantageously as an active filter to compensate the unsuitable power factor and/or current high harmonics of nonlinear loads connected to the mains. After the description of this control algorithm, results of simulation are presented and compared with those for the direct self control (DSC) strategy of PWM rectifiers, which is another new and promising method. The results of the analysis and simulation performed show that the fuzzy power control method is simple and insensitive to the changes of input filter parameters, while the number of sensors needed is relatively low.
