A precise estimation considering the topology and the morphology of wide service areas, with a potential large density of transceivers is performed with the aid of in-house deterministic 3D ray launching algorithm, which is specifically adapted to the conditions of large volume and large traffic density. Due to the co-existence of multiple wireless systems (such as wireless local area networks, mobile networks, body area networks or RF proprietary systems), a heterogeneous scenario, in terms of traffic distribution and hence overall interference is present. The precise characterization of coverage areas of all wireless transceivers, as information sources or undesired interference sources, leads to optimal deployment configurations, in which interference levels are minimized, quality of service is enhanced and overall energetic consumption can be optimized.","PeriodicalId":13244,"journal":{"name":"IEEE SENSORS 2014 Proceedings","volume":"48 1","pages":"8-11"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85102905","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Different colorimetric parameters like the color temperature will be evaluated in comparison to the standard approach based on the estimation of the plasma electronic temperature. In particular, experimental tests performed with a TIG arc-welding process will show that some colorimetric parameters exhibit a better response in terms of detection and correlation to some defects than the traditional spectroscopic approach.","PeriodicalId":13244,"journal":{"name":"IEEE SENSORS 2014 Proceedings","volume":"14 1","pages":"637-640"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"85978414","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The sensor was fabricated using a commercial 1 μm SOI CMOS process. The CMOS tungsten metallization was used to create a hot film element with size 200 μm × 2 μm × 0.3 μm. Post-CMOS, the wafers were back-etched in a single Deep Reactive Ion Etching (DRIE) step to create a 250 μm diameter circular membrane comprising silicon oxide and silicon nitride layers under the hot-film sensor. The sensor exhibits a high Temperature Coefficient of Resistance (TCR) (0.21 %/°C), and very effective thermal isolation from substrate evident from its thermal resistance (20,435 °C/Watt, or ~ 6mW for temperature rise of 100 °C). The sensor has been calibrated in constant temperature (CT) mode in a 2-D laminar flow wind tunnel for a wall shear stress range of 0-1.6 Pa to show an average sensitivity of 35 mV/Pa at an Over Heat Ratio (OHR) of 1.0.","PeriodicalId":13244,"journal":{"name":"IEEE SENSORS 2014 Proceedings","volume":"20 1","pages":"1475-1478"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84451707","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Monitoring the microbiological quality of drinking water relies largely on examination of indicator bacteria such as coliforms and Escherichia coli (E.coli). This paper describes the development of an optical system for rapid detection of E.coli based on a specific cellular biomarker. The biomarker consists on a protein chimera with a fluorescent protein in the N-terminal domain and a specific aminoacid sequence in the C-terminal domain that targets specifically the structure of the microorganism to be detected. The measurement system is based on a photomultiplier tube that captures and measure the bioluminescence signal produced by the biomarker. The developed system is easy handling so it can be used by anyone without specific knowledge.","PeriodicalId":13244,"journal":{"name":"IEEE SENSORS 2014 Proceedings","volume":"16 1","pages":"515-518"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78513640","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

During last decades several approaches have been proposed to perform thermometry during thermal ablation. Among others, Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors show valuable characteristics for such measurement, but their sensitivity to strain entails measurement error for patient respiratory movements. In this work two needle-like probes were developed using two different procedures to encapsulate an FBG into a surgical needle, aiming to allow safe insertion into the patient tissue and to neglect mechanical disturbance due to tissue movements occurring during breathing. The static calibration of the two probes has been carried out in a wide range of temperature (i.e., from 18 °C up to 100 °C), and their response time has been estimated. The calibration curves of the two probes show good linearity and a different sensitivity, and their response time is fast enough to meet the criteria set for temperature monitoring during LA. Since the metallic needle entails a measurement error, called artifact, due to the direct absorption of the laser radiation, the two abovementioned probes have been employed during LA on ex vivo liver. Then, their measurements have been compared to the measurement provided by an FBG without needle, which does not experience artifacts. The good results in terms of both static and dynamic properties of the two probes encourage to perform further analysis regarding the amplitude of the artifacts due to the direct absorption of the metallic needle and regarding the capability of the probes to neglect mechanical disturbance.","PeriodicalId":13244,"journal":{"name":"IEEE SENSORS 2014 Proceedings","volume":"5 1","pages":"1134-1137"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78516141","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although commercially available network analyzers have been the standard for highly sensitive mass sensing using SMR, it is not possible to miniaturize it for mobile sensor. In this work, the wide-range of resonance frequency is tuned by changing the number of inverter chains. The effect of inverter chains for the device sensitivity is also investigated. We also show capacitors used for starting a resonance play an important role in the device sensitivity. We believe this technique will be an essential platform for one-chip SMR-CMOS gas sensor having different resonance frequencies due to the selection of piezoelectric materials or the process variation during the fabrication.","PeriodicalId":13244,"journal":{"name":"IEEE SENSORS 2014 Proceedings","volume":"8 1","pages":"74-77"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78090571","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Chemical bath deposition technique was employed to develop both the nanostructures on a sol-gel grown seed layer deposited SiO2 substrate. 0.1(M) ZnCl2 with 0.3(M) NH3 solution (about 25%) used for synthesis of nanoflowers, while 0.1(M) Zn(Ac)2 with 0.1(M) HMT was employed to escalate nanorods. Both the nanoforms, in resistive mode, were found to detect methanol with a high dynamic range of 0.5-700 ppm. Both the nanoforms offered the optimum operating temperature of 300°C with the corresponding response magnitude (RM) of 39%-92% (nanoflowers) and 54%-94.1% (nanorods) towards 0.5 ppm and 700 ppm methanol respectively. The response time of the nanorod based sensor were found to be faster than its nanoflower based counterpart. Improved methanol sensing properties of nanorods sensor (compared to nanoflower) might be attributed to the more ordered structures of nanorods.","PeriodicalId":13244,"journal":{"name":"IEEE SENSORS 2014 Proceedings","volume":"1 1","pages":"811-814"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73277394","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
