The term is added as a quadratic contribution of the curvature tensor to the Einstein-Hilbert action, originating theories of \"Einstein Gauss-Bonnet\" (EGB) type. These studies are interlaced with those of the conformal anomaly effective action. We review some basic results concerning the structure of these actions, their conformal constraints around flat space and their relation to EGB theories. The local and nonlocal formulations of such effective actions are illustrated. This class of theories find applications in the seemingly unrelated context of topological materials, subjected to thermal and mechanical stress.","PeriodicalId":131792,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Corfu Summer Institute 2021 \"School and Workshops on Elementary Particle Physics and Gravity\" — PoS(CORFU2021)","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-05-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133634994","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The extraction of the spectra has been realized by simulating four dimensional 𝑆𝑈 ( 𝑁 ) gauge theories and performing measurements using lattice techniques. Regarding flux-tubes, we have performed calculations for 𝑁 = 3 , 5 , 6 and for various values of spin, parity and longitudinal momentum. Long flux-tubes can be thought of as infinitesimally thin strings; hence their spectrum is expected to be described by an effective string theory. Furthermore, the flux-tube’s internal structure makes possible the existence of massive states in addition to string modes. Our calculations demonstrate that although most states exhibit a spectrum which can be approximated adequately by Nambu-Goto there is strong evidence for the existence of a massive axion on the world-sheet of the QCD flux-tube as well as a bound state of two such axions. Regarding glueballs, we extracted spectra from 𝑁 = 2 to 𝑁 = 12 which enables us to extrapolate to 𝑁 = ∞ . Our main aim was to calculate the lightest glueball masses for all different configurations of the quantum numbers of spin, parity and charge conjugation. This provides a major update on the spectrum of glueballs in the planar limit.","PeriodicalId":131792,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Corfu Summer Institute 2021 \"School and Workshops on Elementary Particle Physics and Gravity\" — PoS(CORFU2021)","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-05-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133723335","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We firstly consider AdS vacua in General Relativity with a cosmological constant and in arbitrary dimensions. In this context we study a class of gravitational instantons generalizing the Witten’s bubble of nothing and we discuss the derivation of the euclidean action. Secondly we consider a “stringy” non-supersymmetric AdS 4 vacuum arising in a compactification of massive IIA supergravity on a 𝑆 6 and preserving G 2 symmetry. This vacuum has been shown to have a fully stable KK spectrum and also be protected against brane-jet decays. In this framework we discuss a bubble solution in massive IIA connected to the G 2 -invariant vacuum and associated to an instability channel. We finally provide the interpretation of this instability in terms of the nucleation of a bubble of nothing dressed up with a D2 charge distribution.","PeriodicalId":131792,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Corfu Summer Institute 2021 \"School and Workshops on Elementary Particle Physics and Gravity\" — PoS(CORFU2021)","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-05-02","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114197745","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Typical examples for such systems include finite-density QCD, strongly-correlated electron systems and frustrated spin systems, as well as the real-time dynamics of quantum systems. In this talk, we argue that the tempered Lefschetz thimble method (TLTM) [M. Fukuma and N. Umeda, arXiv:1703.00861] and its extension, the worldvolume tempered Lefschetz thimble method (WV-TLTM) [M. Fukuma and N. Matsumoto, arXiv:2012.08468], may be a reliable and versatile solution to the sign problem. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the algorithm by exemplifying a successful application of WV-TLTM to the Stephanov model, which is an important toy model of finite-density QCD. We elucidate such mechanisms at the level of curvature singularities and degenerate metrics in exact as well as linearized solutions to Vasiliev’s equations. As a preamble, we review the underlying higher-spin algebra and its metaplectic group extensions, after which we detail various gauge functions encoding the 𝐴𝑑𝑆 4 vacuum and the non-rotating Bañados–Gomberoff–Martinez(BGM) metric, the four-dimensional lift of the spinless BTZ black hole, in different coordinate patches related by transition functions. We then revisit how, within the unfolded formalism, it is natural extend the BGM black hole through its causal singularity. Finally, we compare the metric-like and unfolded descriptions of scalar fluctuations over the (extended) BGM background, showing how the latter description maps singularities to well-defined metaplectic group elements providing regular values for the Weyl zero-form master field, which thus admits continuation over the full extended BGM spacetime.","PeriodicalId":131792,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Corfu Summer Institute 2021 \"School and Workshops on Elementary Particle Physics and Gravity\" — PoS(CORFU2021)","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124768736","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

S-folds correspond to non-geometric backgrounds of type IIB supergravity of the form AdS 4 × S 1 × M that involve a non-trivial SL ( 2 , Z ) (S-duality) monodromy for the type IIB fields when moving around the S 1 . We present four such solutions with M = S 5 that preserve N = 4 , 2 , 1 , 0 supersymmetries. Via the AdS/CFT correspondence, these solutions are conjectured to describe new strongly coupled three-dimensional CFT’s on a localised interface of SYM. We discuss the existence of flat deformations in the gravity side dual to marginal deformations of the conjectured S-fold CFT’s. From a geometrical perspective, the flat deformations induce a monodromy ℎ on M and replace S 1 × M by the so-called mapping torus 𝑇 (M) ℎ . Interestingly, the flat deformations provide a controlled mechanism of supersymmetry breaking for N ≥ 2 S-folds. We present a class of such non-supersymmetric S-folds obtained by flat-deforming the N = 4 S-fold and discuss their (non-)perturbative stability.","PeriodicalId":131792,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Corfu Summer Institute 2021 \"School and Workshops on Elementary Particle Physics and Gravity\" — PoS(CORFU2021)","volume":"78 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126270400","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such deformations have a number of remarkable properties. In the simplest case, every one-parameter family of associative algebras leads to an $L_infty$-algebra that can be used to construct a classical integrable model. Another application of this class of $L_infty$-algebras is related with the three-dimensional bosonization duality in Chern--Simons vector models, where it implements the idea of the slightly-broken higher spin symmetry. One large class of associative algebras originates from Deformation Quantization of Poisson Manifolds. Applications to the $3d$-bosonization duality require, however, an extension to deformation quantization of Poisson Orbifolds, which is an open problem. The $3d$-bosonization duality can be proven by showing that there is a unique class of invariants of the $L_infty$-algebra that can serve as correlation functions.","PeriodicalId":131792,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Corfu Summer Institute 2021 \"School and Workshops on Elementary Particle Physics and Gravity\" — PoS(CORFU2021)","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126511698","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The contribution of zero-point energy exceeds by many orders of magnitude the observational cosmological upper bound on the energy density of the universe. Therefore it seems natural to expect that vacuum fluctuations of the fundamental fields would influence the cosmological evolution in any way. Our aim in this review article is to describe a recent investigation of the influence of the Yang-Mills vacuum polarisation and of the chromomagnetic condensation on the evolution of Friedmann cosmology, on inflation and on primordial gravitational waves. We derive the quantum energy-momentum tensor and the corresponding quantum equation of state for gauge field theory using the effective Lagrangian approach. The energy-momentum tensor has a term proportional to the space-time metric and provides a finite non-diverging contribution to the effective cosmological constant. This allows to investigate the influence of the gauge field theory vacuum polarisation on the evolution of Friedmann cosmology, inflation and primordial gravitational waves. The Type I-IV solutions of the Friedmann equations induced by the gauge field theory vacuum polarisation provide an alternative inflationary mechanism and a possibility for late-time acceleration. The Type II solution of the Friedmann equations generates the initial exponential expansion of the universe of finite duration and the Type IV solution demonstrates late-time acceleration. The solutions fulfil the necessary conditions for the amplification of primordial gravitational waves.","PeriodicalId":131792,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of Corfu Summer Institute 2021 \"School and Workshops on Elementary Particle Physics and Gravity\" — PoS(CORFU2021)","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121137120","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
