Based on the tight-binding model for Lieb lattice with NH coupling, a nontrivial spectral winding number is pinpointed for certain eigenstates, which translates to geometry-dependent skin modes with tilt boundaries. For ease of implementation, complex refractive indices are employed for the Lieb unit cell of PhC to emulate the NH coupling. Validated by full wave simulation, our work underscores the boundary dependence of skin effect, and provides a concrete prototype design of NHSE implementable by state-of-the-art of topological metamaterial platforms.","PeriodicalId":13094,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics","volume":"32 3: Nanophotonics, Metamaterials and Plasmonics","pages":"4900213-4900213"},"PeriodicalIF":4.5,"publicationDate":"2026-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148480821","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
{"title":"Machine Learning Assists the Design of a W-Band Phase-Change Tunable Wire-Grid Periodic Resonant Broadband Absorber","authors":"Yiting Liu;Cheng Chen;Wei Zhang;Yuhang Wang;Jiaxuan Xue;Wu Zhao;Johan Stiens","doi":"10.1109/JSTQE.2026.3670043","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/JSTQE.2026.3670043","url":null,"abstract":"Millimeter-wave systems require absorbers with high absorption efficiency, broad bandwidth, and multi-functional tunability. However, existing devices based on composite structures and materials face design challenges: traditional methods hardly achieve all three indicators simultaneously, often sacrificing one performance for another, making “high absorption, broad bandwidth, multi-function” integration highly difficult. To overcome this fundamental trade-off, this study designs a W-band (75–110 GHz) composite absorber, integrating VO<sub>2</sub> and graphene, and combining periodic resonant structures with a backplane-free phase-change wire-grid architecture. When integrated into the periodic resonant structure, the VO<sub>2</sub> wire-grid provides thermal ‘on-off’ switching of absorption, whereas graphene offers electrical tunability—both achieved by modulating the effective surface conductivity and thus the impedance matching condition. Guided by an XGBoost-based closed-loop inverse design framework, the XGBoost model optimizes parameters, with convergence achieved after four closed-loop simulation iterations. Results show the VO<sub>2</sub> wire-grid absorber performs excellently at 90° incidence: it achieves near-perfect absorption (>99%) over a 21 GHz sub-band (82–103 GHz), showing an 80% improvement in average absorption compared to copper(Cu) backplanes, under identical unit-cell geometry and simulation conditions, with each configuration independently optimized for peak performance. Graphene provides a maximum modulation amplitude of depth of 68%. Innovations of this study include constructing a periodic resonant wire-grid structure that abandons traditional backplanes and uses wire-grids to expand loss areas, enabling dual-mode multi-physics control through co-integration of VO<sub>2</sub> and graphene, and establishing a machine learning closed-loop framework for parameter optimization. It explores a new paradigm for multi-functional tunable absorbers, providing high-performance solutions for MMW systems such as radar, communications, and biomedical imaging.","PeriodicalId":13094,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics","volume":"32 3: Nanophotonics, Metamaterials and Plasmonics","pages":"1-17"},"PeriodicalIF":5.1,"publicationDate":"2026-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147558025","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Here, we present a reconfigurable Janus metasurface based on the phase change material vanadium dioxide (VO<sub>2</sub>), realizing bidirectional transmission and reflection at different temperatures. The meta-atom is composed of a three-layer metal-VO<sub>2</sub> composite structure and two dielectric layers. When the VO<sub>2</sub> is in the insulating state, the metasurface operates in transmission mode, enabling linear polarization conversion and independent beam control for terahertz (THz) waves incident from both forward and backward directions. When the VO<sub>2</sub> is in the metallic state, the metasurface switches to reflection mode, where linear polarization conversion and phase control of reflected waves are realized through the transmission-phase principle. Furthermore, by combining transmission-phase and geometric-phase mechanisms, decoupled control of circular polarization is achieved. By arrangement of these meta-atoms, we further designed a four-channel device capable of dynamically switching between the metalens and vortex beam generator. Meanwhile, a six-channel imaging device is constructed to produce distinct letter patterns under different operating modes. The results demonstrate that the proposed metasurface device achieves versatile multi-channel multiplexing. This work provides a new strategy for enhancing the multiplexing freedom of metasurface-based wavefront manipulation, with promising applications in THz rader, imaging, communications, and related fields.","PeriodicalId":13094,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics","volume":"32 3: Nanophotonics, Metamaterials and Plasmonics","pages":"1-9"},"PeriodicalIF":5.1,"publicationDate":"2026-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147696640","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this work, a hybrid photodetector architecture was realized by integrating one-dimensional (1-D) ZnO nanorods (NRs) with CsPbBr<sub>3</sub> perovskite quantum dots (PQDs), forming a sensitized heterostructure for enhanced visible-light response. The structural and compositional features of the pristine 1-D ZnO NRs and PQDs-capped NRs samples were systematically examined through electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and optical spectroscopies, revealing successful decoration of CsPbBr<sub>3</sub> PQDs on the surface of 1-D ZnO NRs. Photoluminescence and absorption analyses demonstrate that the introduction of PQDs effectively extends the optical response of ZnO from the ultraviolet into the visible region. Electrical measurements further show that the PQDs/1-D ZnO NRs heterostructure exhibits markedly improved photoresponse under blue and green illumination compared with unmodified 1-D ZnO NRs, while maintaining low dark current characteristics. This enhancement is attributed to efficient interfacial charge transfer and suppressed carrier recombination enabled by favorable energy-level alignment between CsPbBr<sub>3</sub> PQDs and 1-D ZnO NRs. The proposed hybrid structure provides a viable route toward compact, cost-effective, and low-power broadband photodetectors suitable for ultraviolet and visible-light sensing applications.","PeriodicalId":13094,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics","volume":"32 3: Nanophotonics, Metamaterials and Plasmonics","pages":"3800610-3800610"},"PeriodicalIF":4.5,"publicationDate":"2026-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148481141","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the computational cost becomes prohibitive due to the complex equation-solving process when applied to nanostructured photocathodes, particularly for large-scale nanoarrays. In this work, we introduce a hybrid deep learning framework that employs a convolutional neural network (CNN) trained on data generated by rigorous three-dimensional photoemission simulations. The network is first pretrained on photocurrent data from small-scale nanoarrays (dimensions≤100 nm), demonstrating its capability to capture the underlying photoemission physics embedded in the simulation data. A lightweight transfer learning strategy using only hundreds of larger-scale samples then generalizes the Photoemission CNN (PECNN) to broader geometries. This approach reduces the average prediction error from 36.82% to 2.91% for emitted photocurrent and from 54.80% to 3.34% for collected photocurrent. Concurrently, the framework achieves computational speedups of approximately 1.6 × 10<sup>3</sup> for small nanoarrays and 1.5 × 10<sup>4</sup> for larger systems compared to traditional numerical solvers. Post-hoc interpretability analyses, including SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP), Permutation Importance (PI), and Partial Dependence Plots (PDP), identify array spacing, nanorod diameter, and substrate thickness as the dominant parameters governing emission performance, and the learned relationships align consistently with established photoemission theory. By delivering cross-scale, interpretable, and ultra-fast predictions, the PECNN framework provides a powerful tool for the rational design and optimization of advanced photoemission devices.","PeriodicalId":13094,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics","volume":"32 3: Nanophotonics, Metamaterials and Plasmonics","pages":"9300209-9300209"},"PeriodicalIF":5.1,"publicationDate":"2026-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"148171548","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With the advancement of optoelectronic devices, unbiased (self-powered) photodetectors can better meet the requirements of specific scenarios. However, under zero-bias operation, the photocurrent is typically small, resulting in limited detectivity. To address this issue, this paper constructed a BP/n-GaN heterojunction photodetector through mechanical exfoliation, successfully increasing the performance of the GaN photodetector by 4-6 orders of magnitude. First, black phosphorus (BP) was synthesized via chemical vapor transport (CVT) and subsequently transferred onto an /n-GaN film to construct a BP/n-GaN heterojunction. Then, the I-V characteristics, light response and other key performances of the self-powered ultraviolet photoelectric detector based on the BP/n-GaN heterostructure were investigated. It was found that under no external bias and 365 nm illumination, the heterostructure device exhibits good rectification behavior, with a responsivity of 0.023 A/W and a detectivity is 2.9 × 10<sup>11</sup> Jones. Compared to the GaN photoelectric detector fabricated in this paper, the performance of the heterostructure device has improved by 4 orders of magnitude in terms of detection rate and response rate. Moreover, the UPS, ultraviolet-visible absorption spectroscopy tests and theoretical calculations determined the type II band alignment of the BP/n-GaN heterojunction, which can effectively separate photogenerated carriers. This study indicates that this BP/n-GaN heterojunction photodetector leverages the high carrier mobility of black phosphorus to enhance carrier transport and collection under zero bias, providing an emerging low-power UV photodetection platform relevant to nanophotonics-oriented UV sensing and communication.","PeriodicalId":13094,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Quantum Electronics","volume":"32 3: Nanophotonics, Metamaterials and Plasmonics","pages":"1-8"},"PeriodicalIF":5.1,"publicationDate":"2026-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"147696181","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":2,"RegionCategory":"工程技术","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
