Tackling this intricacy requires integrating gender into environment management efforts because coordinated approach is needed in order to solve such problems. But there are determinants that affect this integration. This study intends to assess determinants of women’s participation in environmental protection and management. A mixed approach with concurrent design was employed. The quantitative data were collected from 118 respondents and qualitative data were from purposefully selected participants. Statistical and thematic data analysis techniques were employed to analyze the quantitative and qualitative data, respectively. The study found out that women are indispensable in environmental administration. Accordingly, women’s age groups (28-37 & 38-47) were positive factors; whereas, violence, technology, social services, production, consumption, resources and institutions were negative factors. It is possible to conclude that despite women are essential in environmental protection and management, they are obstructed by various factors. This has an impact on the environment. Therefore, governmental and non-governmental organizations should work cooperatively to enhance women’s participation via training, awareness-rising, and by making social service available.","PeriodicalId":128999,"journal":{"name":"Journal of African Development Studies","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115873969","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main objective of this study was to assess temporal and spatial road infrastructure development during three political regimes in Ethiopia and its impacts. The methodology employed mainly secondary data supported by limited primary data. The results showed that the road density of Ethiopia per 1,000 people has increased for more than four folds from 1951 to 2018). The mean distance of the network also showed decreasing trends. The empirical analysis shows that there are significant positive socioeconomic impacts upon households. However, the road traffic accident, as one of the main direct negative impacts, has been increasing from time to time. Compared to population trend since 1951, the correlation between the density of the total and asphalt roads is 0.87 and 0.38, respectively. This shows that the emphasis given to the expansion of paved roads in Ethiopia particularly in recent years is rather weak and needs attention.","PeriodicalId":128999,"journal":{"name":"Journal of African Development Studies","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124449011","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is due to the role of the enterprises in bridging urban and rural areas together and showing the interdependence of the rural and urban economies in developing countries. However, the Ethiopian micro, small and medium enterprises do not seem to be on the right track in their relationship to the agricultural sector as required by the government policy, strategies and the Growth and Transformation Plan (GTP). The objective of this paper is to evaluate the capacity of micro, small and medium enterprises to forge rural-urban relationships that will assist towards achieving the goals of Growth and Transformation Plan. The study is based on a concurrent triangulation mixed-method approach using both quantitative and qualitative data with a questionnaire survey from 525 owners/managers of micro, small and medium enterprises as the main data collection tool. The study also collected qualitative data through informant interviews from 22 MSME owners/managers and 10 urban planners. The paper finds from the study that as high as 53.1 percent of micro, small and medium enterprises in the three administrative towns of Wolaita in south Ethiopia are wholly or partially dependent on industrial products for their inputs and that only 1.5 percent appear involved in the production and supply of agricultural inputs. Moreover, as much as 57.6 percent of the study's respondents chose the main reason hindering linkages as the unavailability of preferred and quality raw materials in the local market. In order to promote the linkage between the two sectors and areas, both the agricultural and MSME sectors' productivity should be enhanced through improved agricultural productivity and enhancing the performance of the small business sector to provide agricultural inputs.","PeriodicalId":128999,"journal":{"name":"Journal of African Development Studies","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130350611","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main objective of the study was to assess the implementation of good governance while rendering services to the citizens. The study employed both quantitative and qualitative approaches. SPSS statistic was used for the descriptive analysis. The findings indicate favourable results in meeting the needs of citizens. Although the implementation process has brought tangible results, it is not free from some challenges. Limitations in providing services while balanced interests in a timely, appropriate, and responsive manner; inefficiency and ineffectiveness; limitations in information distribution; and lack of equal opportunities in the decision-making process were the challenges. In conclusion, both achievements and failures were observed. At last, understanding customers’ expectations in service provisions; systematizing customers’ feedback; and continuous awareness creation to the staff are the recommendations identified for future development.","PeriodicalId":128999,"journal":{"name":"Journal of African Development Studies","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133460481","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main aims of the study are to examine the efficiency of Framework Agreement (FWA) procurement practice, to analyze the perception towards the frame and to identify the major challenges of FWA based public procurement in Ethiopia. The study employed a descriptive approach using an exploratory and explanatory design on data collected by survey questionnaire and key informant interview. The result indicated that procurement planning, bid solicitation process, goods receiving and payment and conflict management were significant positive predictors of efficiency of FWA procurement practices. Further, inadequate legal framework, loose coordination, incapable suppliers and market set-up, lack of capable and committed procurement professionals, low quality and quantity, delay on delivery, and loose contract management are the major challenges affecting the efficiency of FWA procurement. Moderate perception towards the frame by the procurement professionals has been identified. In conclusion, FWA procurement is yet to meet the purpose of ensuring value for money. Finally, policymakers and practitioners need to give the required attention to improve the efficiency level of FWA procurement of the country.","PeriodicalId":128999,"journal":{"name":"Journal of African Development Studies","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115123532","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Crucial to those questions include, are we already collecting more revenue than the economy can produce or not? The current study has precisely addressed this question in the case of Ethiopia. Tax effort prediction is made via an error correction model. The finding shows that tax effort, theoretically measured as the difference between tax revenue collected and tax potential is extremely low in the country. This problem becomes more complicated when GDP shows as a rather inverse predictor of tax potential, indicating massive work of tax base identification to enable tax ratio moves with the speed of GDP growth.","PeriodicalId":128999,"journal":{"name":"Journal of African Development Studies","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130124504","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, this paper aims to investigate the main determinants of total factor productivity (TFP) of large and medium scale manufacturing industries in Ethiopia for the period 1993‐2018. An econometric model (system GMM) was applied to analyze the determinants of TFP growth of large and medium manufacturing industries. The result from the econometric analysis confirmed that the intensity of imported raw materials, the loan provided to the manufacturing industries, foreign direct investment, human capital, and infrastructure growth (road coverage) had a significant positive effect on the TFP of Large and Medium Scale manufacturing industries. However, export intensity and macroeconomic instability(inflation) adversely affected TFP. The descriptive analysis showed that, in general, the number of firms, size of jobs created, and value-added per worker by large and medium scale manufacturing industries are continuously increasing from time to time and this sector is dominated by agro-processing industries (food & beverage subsectors) and non-metallic mineral industries. Regardless of the continuous rise in number, employment, and value-added per worker, there has been no similar progress in manufactured exports. Further, it is proved that the current operation of Large and Medium Scale Manufacturing Industries in Ethiopia is highly constrained by a shortage of supply of raw materials; absence of demand for products, and lack of working capital. Therefore, the government should focus on policies aimed at human capital formation, loan access, infrastructure development, attracting foreign direct investment, and creating a stable macroeconomic environment to intensify TFP of Large and Medium Scale manufacturing industries.","PeriodicalId":128999,"journal":{"name":"Journal of African Development Studies","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115312761","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is an unanswered whether road-based or rail-based public transport is more sustainable for rapidly growing cities like Addis Ababa. This study is done to empirically evaluate the economic sustainability impacts by Addis Ababa light rail transit (AA-LRT) using performance indicators like travel time, travel cost andemployment generation. Likely, it investigates whether AA-LRT is more economically sustainable or not, compared to other road-based public transits such as City-buses and Midi-buses and compared to the situation before the start of AA- LRT operation. Samples for onboard surveys were selected from transit users and experts through proportional quota sampling. Empirical quasi experiment, multi-criteria analysis and comparative impactanalysis approaches were used together with Paired-samples t-test, One way ANOVA, Ordinal and Logistic Regression. Findings indicate AA-LRT is really producing economic benefits such as travel time savings and affordable travel costs since 2015. Benefits are found to be more economically sustainable in AA-LRT than other road-based public transits. Furthermore, travel time and travel cost benefits in the post-AA-LRT period are better than situations before the start of AA-LRT in 2015. Thus, AA-LRT makes a more significant contribution to economic sustainability. However, it has little weaknesses like inadequate crossing facilities, overcrowded and delayed trips, troubled transfer, fare, and ticket system. To enhance the economic sustainability and address shortcomings, new designs like overhead crossings; expansion of rail network coverage; increasing number of trains and speed; integration among transits; implementation of flat fare and improving ticket system arerecommended.","PeriodicalId":128999,"journal":{"name":"Journal of African Development Studies","volume":"106 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114769941","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The data collected from 509 respondents in different groups of information users were analyzed using percentage, mean and kruskal-wallis H test. The result shows that most of the user groups regard annual reports as the most important source of information and income statements as an important section of annual reports. The majority of the user groups attached the highest ranking for the relevant attribute for the annual reports and delay in publishing annual reports as the most serious problems. The users of information perceive that a public bank discloses more information with better quality than private banks and the analysis of annual reports also disclose the same results.
