For the purposes of this text, two of the most popular novels on the publishing market have been selected at present — Jennifer Saint’s Ariadne and Magda Knedler’s Pani Labiryntu. Before analyzing the above novels, the most important theoretical findings regarding the presence of myth in contemporary, recent literature and pop culture will be recalled. A fundamental issue that needs to be addressed will be the objection of some researchers who claimed that myth is degenerating in popular literature. The findings of feminist criticism, whose research­ers still emphasize the lack of female mythology, will also be important, as well as the fact that contemporary writers attempt to restore female genealogy in their works by reinterpreting stories embedded in culture, such as the myth of Theseus, etc. The analysis of the mentioned novels will be carried out on two levels: I will look at how the authors create women in Ari­adne’s immediate surroundings, as well as men. This procedure will be aimed at answering the question posed in the title — who will save Ariadne? Our aim is to demonstrate that the story of filiation appears very symptomatic of a new historical situation at the beginning of the twenty-first century, which seems to be written without a “Master” both on the literary and spiritual levels. Thus, there arises the need to accommodate the “ideologies of the end” that appear at the moment when the author enters the literary scene. By trying to establish an impossible dialogue with the Absent, Rouaud voluntarily becomes the archivist of the end of a certain world. {"title":"Juan Manuel Torres on His Way to Literary Paradise between Poland and Mexico","authors":"","doi":"10.26485/zrl/2022/66.1/21","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.26485/zrl/2022/66.1/21","url":null,"abstract":"The essay is dedicated to the work of the Mexican writer and film director Juan Manuel Torres (1938–1980), who had lived in Łódź in the 1960s for many years and studied directing at the film school there. His prose is strongly influenced by Polish literature and culture. Torres’ work is currently experiencing a rediscovery: the historical-critical edition of his Obras completas [Collected Works] was recently published (2020 and 2021) by the Mexican publishing press Nieve de Chamoy (two volumes so far, the last third is announced for the end of 2023). The aim of this paper is to present and interpret Torres’ literary work and to outline its biographical, historical, and theoretical contexts. What concept of literature and art can be found in his autofiction? In Torres’ work, the reality of the Cold War meets the atmosphere of the sexual revolution of the 1960s. The author registers changes in the sexual morality and deconstructs gender stereotypes. In his prose, one can find some (for his times) provocative motifs, such as abortion, homosexuality or ménage à trois. Torres combines them with a complex poetological reflection on the crisis of representation and the role of art in the light of the beginning of postmodernism and the idea of the “literature of exhaustion.” The essay consists of five parts. After discussing the latest edition and introducing the life and work of Torres, I present the literary contexts in which his writing can be placed. The fourth part is devoted to the collection of his short stories El viaje [The Journey], which contains the most interesting texts for the Polish audience in the discussed edition. The last part is a sketch of Torres understanding of literature and art. The dialectic of art is questioned upon its links to capitalism, the sustainability of art and the artist when it comes to the confidence of realization of one’s ideas. The map-territory relation creates space for expressing the dynamics between the idea itself, its representation and what it entails when it comes to existing or perceived notions of delineation between the natural order (substance, materialization) and modernity (abstraction, impression). Houellebecq’s character gives precedence to the idea, and as in non-art, its serving as a conduit for natural expression, at the same time sets a limit to human expression, culminating in nature overcoming culture. Suggesting that both nature and (idea) art deriving from it can be brutal in their own ways. The inquiry consists of trying to unearth the identity of an artist and doing so by using biofictional practices to draw a connection with, but not limited to, a conceptual creator, Douglas Huebler. Intersection of the conceptual modes of reality with the reality itself in art is inevitable. With art, the onus is in respecting the two worlds with their separate qualities, bonding the differences without negating nor assimilating them; stretching the limits of creation both in the artist and what constitutes art as a whole. Yet differences in opinion are common when defining which literary genre a given text fits best. However, my study here takes a step back from that spot to see how critics and other academics can conceptualize a literary genre in the first place. My case study is the modern lyric poem, a well-known literary genre in poetics. The results, never before published, include replies to an informal survey carried out at an international cognitive poetics conference at Osnabrück University in Germany. I begin by discussing handbook definitions and examples named. Then I compare them to results obtained from participants at the academic conference. Results sometimes overlap, aligning with criteria published in handbooks, although there are variations. In the first part of the essay, the author reconstructs four paths researchers have followed so far in animal studies. In the following parts, however, he addresses the problem of the biography of companion animals as a form increasingly popular at a specific historical moment, characterized by a change in the treatment of non-human characters. Currently, animals cease to play the role of slaves and subordinates. In many narratives, their status is similar to that of children. They deserve care and attention because they are full members of families. The author’s intention of the essay was not so much to codify the rules of the model biography of the animal but to see several possible variants of its implementation. The increased knowledge about the dangers to which companion animals are exposed and health prevention causes people to remodel their relationship with animals. The moment of illness and later death turns out to be crucial to emphasize the importance of the encounter with non-human existence and the impact it has had on the person. The essay’s author noticed many narratives, the characters of which are companion animals. These narratives are prompted by moments of crisis (long-term illness or dying), but writers rarely give up on placing themselves in a projected story about the fate of an animal. The reflections undertaken in the analyzed narratives can be described as temporary (related to the death or illness of an animal) and leaning into the future (they concern the moment of losing one’s own health and fitness). Zoobiographies have multiple functions: they give animals immortality, relate the last stage of their lives and force writers to settle accounts with a being that passes (noting mistakes, abuses, and moments of happiness). The contemporary phenomenon of zoobiography will be associated with linguistic, moral and social changes. The imperative influences their popularity to immortalize companion animals. Their lives are worth commemorating, as are human family members. {"title":"Genre(less)ness of Berlin Childhood around 1900 by Walter Benjamin","authors":"","doi":"10.26485/zrl/2022/66.1/23","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.26485/zrl/2022/66.1/23","url":null,"abstract":"The aim of this article is to confront the problem of the unclear genre identity of the works that make up the cycle Berliner Kindheit um neunzehnhundert (Berlin Childhood around 1900) by the well-known German philosopher and writer Walter Benjamin. The short autobiographical prose forms included in this collection are sometimes referred to in German as Erinnerungsepisoden (reminiscence episodes), Denkbilder (images of thoughts) or Prosaminiaturen (prose miniatures), but basically none of the terms proposed by researchers conveys their specificity. According to the author, a possible reason for the “genrelessness” of these texts is to be found in the theory of memory adhered to by Benjamin, which lies at their genesis. The intellectual situation prevailing at the turn of the 20th century (a crisis of thinking about literature, especially prose, through the prism of genre norms, a “turn towards objects” in literature and phenomenology) also influenced their difficult genre classification. Benjamin himself referred to his works in his self-commentaries and correspondence as “Stücke” which can be translated as “fragments” or “pieces.” Thus, we are faced with an interesting case where the author himself creates a genre name for his own texts that did not previously exist in the tradition. These considerations lead to the conclusion that it was more important for the writer to present a specific thought, consisting of an object, place, or event from the author’s childhood recalled from his memories, which formed the basis of the works examined, than to fulfil the criteria of a particular genre. Its aim is to show the epistolographic strategies adopted by the correspondents. First, by analysing the structure of the letters, I characterise the authors’ writing style, juxtaposing its similarities and differences. This makes it possible to show the features characteristic of a love letter, to which Osiecka and Przybora’s collection belongs. I also look at what influences the uniqueness of the love story and the development of their feelings in the epistolographic space. This allows one to see how the authors’ writing workshops differ and how the correspondents express their emotions. I also highlight the performative role of correspondence and how writers can create each other. An analysis of the unspoken words in the letters is also important. I show what effect such a procedure had on the reader’s perception of the correspondence. Then I focus on the structure of the correspondence of Agnieszka Osiecka and Jeremi Przybora, showing the style of the artists, the differences in their writing and the common features of their letters. I characterise Osiecka’s and Przybora’s writing separately. I outline the evolution of the writers’ feelings in love throughout their correspondence. The work is therefore divided into two main parts, which can be named successively: theoretical, including definitional and methodological comments, and analytical, focusing on the interpretation of A Little Annihilation by Anna Janko (the daughter of Teresa Ferenc, who survived the pacification of Sochy in the Zamość region) as a testimony changing memory of the Holocaust. The theoretical part is filled with studies on (post)memory, its multi-directionality (as understood by Michael Rothberg), and the concept (as presented by Marianne Hirsch). A more extensive analytical part focuses on the uniqueness of the extermination experience of Teresa Ferenc and Anna Janko — it is a reflection on the transmission of traumatic memory, which can take place in many dimensions: from the subject already experiencing the trauma (Teresa Ferenc) to the subject just experiencing this trauma (Anna Janko) and just experiencing this trauma (Anna Janko) to the subject already experienced by the trauma (Teresa Ferenc). This work also considers the competitive aspect of (post)memory multidirectional.
