{"title":"Diachronic Asymmetry as a Comparativist Problem","authors":"","doi":"10.26485/zrl/2023/66.1/3","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.26485/zrl/2023/66.1/3","url":null,"abstract":"This article offers an unpopular comparativistic method that does not fit into the previously known conceptual frameworks of comparative literature. In order to be more clearly distinguished from the hermeneutic practices existing in comparativistics, a brief overview of some basic views on the subject of comparative literature has been made. Thus, it becomes clear that we not only ignore the contactological aspect, but in order to apply this approach, it is necessary to prove the absence of any form of direct or indirect interaction. In terms of typology, we apply the requirement of non-appropriation to a common cultural area or direction. The manifestations of typological aspects (e.g., similar motives or characteristics of the character model) are seen as a consequence and not as a prerequisite for carrying out a comparativistic procedure. The proposed model is illustrated by paralleling two diachronously different artistic worlds for which there is factual evidence that they meet the criteria set by us — those of François Villon and Karel Hynek Mácha. We only consider the proposed comparativistic modus as possible without ignoring others. {"title":"Experiments with Genres in Karol Hubert Rostworowski’s “Miłosierdzie” and „Straszne Dzieci”","authors":"","doi":"10.26485/zrl/2023/66.1/15","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.26485/zrl/2023/66.1/15","url":null,"abstract":"The author analyses Karol Hubert Rostworowski’s Miłosierdzie and Straszne Dzieci through the prism of genre studies and distinguishes several formal solutions connected with genres such as mystery play, commedia dell'arte, morality play, nativity scene, circus or tableau vivant. The analysis demonstrates that not only had Rostworowski used the mentioned genres, but also transformed them to determine the very perception of events taking place on the scene. This technique of manoeuvring separate genres in Miłosierdzie is based on both combining and contrasting them, which enabled the playwright to create a tragicomic character of the play. However, in Straszne Dzieci he hyperbolized genres in order to construct an on-scene grotesque. Turns out, Rostworowski’s creative output is centred around the sublime and the tragic just as much as the comic and the ironic. Besides, metatheatrical techniques, which encouraged the audience to think of Rostworowski’s works in an analytical manner, are yet another important aspect of the two plays associated with the listed genres. Therefore, the great genre experiment executed by Rostworowski in the 1920s cannot be simplified into ordinary games with conventions. The playwright has endeavoured to break the usual schemes of perception among his audience, redefining their judgements on mankind, history, and religion. The author argues that the analysis of the two plays is crucial in Rostworowski’s studies as well as in the discussion on the development of the entirety of dramatic works during the interwar period. On the Sidelines of Hanna Dymel-Trzebiatowska’s Book Philosophical and Translator’s Wanderings in the Moominvalley (Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Gdańskiego, Gdańsk 2019) The essay is based on a review of Hanna Dymel-Trzebiatowska’s book Philosophical and Translator’s Wanderings in the Moominvalley (2019). The interdisciplinary considerations of a distinguished researcher of translation theory and a prominent Scandinavian scholar deal with the question of the multi-addressiveness of works intentionally aimed at a young audience and their basis becomes the analysis and interpretation of Tove Jansson’s series about the Moomins, deeply rooted in philosophical contexts. The researcher’s interpretive contexts include psychoanalytic criticism, cognitive poetics, existential philosophy, philosophy of ethics in the broadest sense, and the anthropology of childhood, thanks to which the book fits perfectly into contemporary discussions of the function, place, role and status of children’s literature, its significance in the broader circulation of literary culture, and — potentially — its presence in the field of school Polish language education. The author of the book proves that the characters of Jansson’s stories, reacting in different ways to problems, have to face the threat of life, face the black vision of the world, the dramatic atmosphere of anxiety and make reasonable decisions, related to the “inner” overcoming of misfortune and fear of disaster. Enjambment is known as one of the most constitutive phenomena in verse, and its importance has grown immeasurably in our cultural sphere over the last few decades. Therefore, it has been a real wake-up call not only for poets, linguists, versologists, literary historians, and philosophers, but also for those studying human cognition and cognitive processes. There are various types of enjambments, each with different properties. Some fundamentally affect our perception of the poem, while others are barely perceptible and require specific attention. Some can be found between verses, within them, or between poetic stanzas. Some examples exist at the level of syntax, while others are found within the word. But most importantly, they all belong to the realm of versification. All of them create meanings and shape the reading. {"title":"Talk to Animals. “Animal Crossing: New Horizons”","authors":"","doi":"10.26485/zrl/2023/66.1/19","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.26485/zrl/2023/66.1/19","url":null,"abstract":"Video games which base their narration on avatar-based representation of the player shift the narrative towards the interactive receiver, a “surrogate self ” within the game’s tale. The immersive activism of the sovereign influence of the player on the course of the game is nonetheless significantly limited in case of procedural games, as the interactivity may prove to be an imposed or anticipated inter-passivity of the receiver. The chaos-inducing and destabilizing effect of the pandemic on social life shown in the example of the rhetorical, both utopian and persuasive game Animal Crossing proved to be the anticipated virtual ersatz of real social order. The players’ anxious dissociations and dislocations were assuaged by the rhetorical disposition of the game, which does not require deep investment. It is an ambient game in the sense that the player allows his in-game islander avatar to “lead them by hand”. The player does actively belong to the allotopic community, but nevertheless their alternative post-identity becomes a form of psychological escapism which allows them to relinquish factual decision making. Meanwhile, to explore the new possibilities of the island community, the game poses a condition: one has to accept its dominant economic aspect. Animal Crossing’s narrative subordinates the active interaction in-game to obedience to rhetorical procedures which, through second-person narration, impose quasi-capitalistic rules of order to the simulation of island fun. The player is thus not sovereign in their actions, but rather they follow instructions aimed at them. The market regulations of late capitalism form the ideological background of these instructions. Zeszyt poświęcony narracjom drugoosobowym zredagowały Joanna Jeziorska-Haładyj (Uniwersytet Warszawski) oraz Magdalena Rembowska-Płuciennik (Instytut Badań Literackich PAN) i jest on pierwszą tematyczną prezentacją tej formy opowiadania w polskiej teorii literatury. Przygotowanie publikacji jest wyrazem zarówno chęci omówienia zagranicznego stanu badań, jak i dostrzeżenia rosnącej popularności takich narracji w literaturze polskiej i mediach cyfrowych. Spotkanie odbyło się za pośrednictwem platformy Zoom, było równocześnie transmitowane na żywo w mediach społecznościowych (Facebook) i jest dostępne do obejrzenia na YouTube 1. {"title":"Chopcula and her Mysterious World — About Autobiography in the Poetry of Małgorzata Lebda","authors":"","doi":"10.26485/zrl/2022/66.1/24","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.26485/zrl/2022/66.1/24","url":null,"abstract":"The aim of this article is to present the autobiographical character in the poetry of Małgorzata Lebda, whose work is filled with personal experiences and memories, especially those of the poet’s childhood and youth spent in her family village — Żeleźnikowa Wielka. The issue is based on the example of her debut volume — Tropy (2009) and the poetic triptych — Sprawy ziemi (2020), which consists of three earlier poetry volumes published by Lebda: Border of the Forest (2013), Matecznik (2016) and Dreams of the Uckermärkers (2019). Full of autobiographical experiences, Lebda’s poetry turns out to be at the same time a site for playing with memory, with memories and for working through difficult, traumatic experiences. The article also contains an analysis of the construction of the lyrical subject — chopcula — inextricably linked to the space of Lebda's autobiographical place — Żeleźnikowa Wielka. The poet’s hometown also turns out to be a fairy-tale land of the girl’s childhood and youth, but at the same time it has been marked by trauma, which the author tries to work through with the help of memory in her poems.
