In future, energy efficiency is of vital importance for wireless networks due to a large number of connected and battery constrained mobile devices. In Long Term Evolution Advanced (LTE-Advanced), Carrier Aggregation (CA) is proposed to increase the transmission bandwidth and hence data rate. This paper studies the effect of CA on the total power transmitted by the LTE-Advanced eNodeB based on the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) downlink while taking the users Quality of Service (QoS) constraints into consideration. The numerical analysis and results show that by using CA a reduction in total power consumption can be achieved.","PeriodicalId":127217,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 8th GCC Conference & Exhibition","volume":"96 9","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120943121","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its simplicity encouraged researchers to apply a wide variety of classic and intelligent control techniques. These techniques are used to control the speed and torque via appropriate determination of switching-on and switching-off angles, usually associated with applying chopping in between. However, the nonlinear nature of the machine forced the utilization of sophisticated models to assist speed and torque controllers to select proper switching angles. Especially at high speeds, the uncontrolled current during freewheeling may produce negative torque and consequently torque ripples. Considerable research efforts have been performed to reduce such ripples. In this paper, a new switching technique is proposed. The technique aims to deal with the current waveform during excitation and freewheeling as a whole via correlating the switching-on, switching-off and current-end angles using simple calculations. The restrictions and limitations imposed on each switching angle to mollify operation conditions are investigated. An extensive simulated study is carried out to validate the reliability of the proposed technique. The results show the effectiveness of the proposed control method for practical high-speed applications.","PeriodicalId":127217,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 8th GCC Conference & Exhibition","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128071552","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The combined modulation schemes include polarization-division-multiplexed quadrature phase-shift keying (PDM-QPSK) with M-ary pulse position modulation (M-ary PPM). In addition, we investigate the performance of polarization-division-multiplexed binary phase-shift keying (PDM-BPSK)-M-ary PPM. The performance of the two modulation schemes was evaluated under the finite extinction ratio (ER) of optical transmitters. Simulation results indicate that PDM-BPSK M-ary PPM systems are more sensitive to finite ER than PDM-QPSK M-ary PPM systems. The results also indicate that for M ≥ 32, for both modulation schemes, a severe ER penalty (more than 5 dB) exists for ER ≤ 23 dB.","PeriodicalId":127217,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 8th GCC Conference & Exhibition","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132297332","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed technique is based on the double-stage configuration in which the matrix converter is modeled as three-phase rectifier followed by a nine-phase inverter. Both rectifier and inverter stages are controlled using space-vector modulation technique. In the rectifier stage, the modulation is based on input currents space-vectors. However, the modulation of the inverter stage is based on output voltages space-vectors. Two different schemes are suggested to control the inverter stage. In the first scheme, only largest space vectors are used in order to achieve maximum voltage transfer ratio of the inverter stage. In the second scheme, eight active vectors are used in each sector in order to minimize the switching stresses and to give a sinusoidal output voltage. It is observed that, using the first scheme results in achieving a higher value of the maximum overall voltage transfer ratio. However, the output voltages contain a significant amount of lower order harmonics. On the other hand, sinusoidal output voltages with a reduced value are obtained by second scheme. A sample of the obtained simulation results is presented to support the viability the proposed technique.","PeriodicalId":127217,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 8th GCC Conference & Exhibition","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129572091","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper introduces an effective real-time compression scheme to overcome the limitation of payload size of the transmission channel. This scheme utilizes the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT), Bit-Field Preserving (BFP) and Running Length Encoding (RLE) methods which showed efficient compression results. The scheme dynamically checks if the compressed packets fit into the available payload. If not, the original signal will be divided into blocks and each block will be re-compressed again. The dynamic scheme was tested on large and small number of samples. The results show that a small block of 64, 128 or 256 samples will not affect the compression performance and no distortion occurred on the reconstructed signal.","PeriodicalId":127217,"journal":{"name":"2015 IEEE 8th GCC Conference & Exhibition","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115625103","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
