Glutamate pyrovate transamiase (GPT) and glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (GOT) catalyze transamination of glutamate to alpha ketoglutarate. Because vitamin B6 is essential for the enzymes activities, this study was undertaken to examine the effect of vitamin B6 on age related changes of this enzyme in rat brain. Three and 30 months old male rats were injected with vitamin B6 and the animal's brains were homogenized in phosphate buffer and the enzymes activities were measured in the super- natant. The activities of the enzymes in aged rats were significantly lower as compared to that of young animals. Vitamin B6 induced activation of the brain enzymes in both ages, however, the activation was significantly pronounced in aged animals. Significant activation of GPT and GOT by vitamin B6 in aged rat brain may be resulted from either lower availability of vitamin B6 in aged animals, or lower affinity of the enzymes for pyridoxal 5-phosphate, which is likely to be related to conformational changes during aging. It is suggested that vitamin B6 may restore the activity of these enzymes during the brain aging.","PeriodicalId":124628,"journal":{"name":"American Journal of Medicine and Medical Sciences","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115105443","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This exposure to Cannabis has increased the incidence in urological and reproductive pathologies. Frequent marijuana use significantly increase testicular cancer risk and several urologic dysfunctions. This study clinically investigates the epidemiological evidence on the major adverse health effects of cannabis use and the link associated with urological dysfunctions and considers its implications for policy. A cross-sectional sample of 2290 males attending urology primary care clinics and inpatients in healthcare institutions in the Niger Delta Region was undertaken, 75 of the cases were included in the randomized follow-up study from March 2009 to March 2011. Those who use marijuana weekly or who have had exposure to marijuana since adolescents had twice the cancer risk, erectile and infertile anomalies, when compared to men who never smoked marijuana. Cannabis use was associated with urological dysfunctions like erectile dysfunctions, infertility and testicular cancer.","PeriodicalId":124628,"journal":{"name":"American Journal of Medicine and Medical Sciences","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124098853","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For this purpose, the data is acquired from Nilphamary Government Girls High School of the classes of five, six, seven and eight during1st June- 30 th June, 2008. In this study, it is to investigate the pattern of age at menarche of total respondents and the pattern of height, weight and body mass index by the age of the respondents in accordance with menarche and non-menarche. The age range of the respondents was between 10 to 14 years. Chi-square test and logistic regression analysis are employed in this paper. This study also displays the association of age at menarche with socio-demographic variables of respondents. It is realized from the association that early menarche for school going girl's height, weight, father income, body mass index, time spent by watching television and father educational qualification were highly significant but mother educational qualification, mother occupation, father occupation, number of siblings, order of birth, time spent by playing and mother time spent were insig- nificant. In logistic analysis, it was found that only height, weight and time spent by watching TV were significant which have positive effects on age at menarche.","PeriodicalId":124628,"journal":{"name":"American Journal of Medicine and Medical Sciences","volume":"1103 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120870294","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We aimed to test the role of aqueous olive leaf extract (AOLE) in modulating metabolic disorders occurring in hepatic malignancy induced by trichloroacetic acid (TCA). Design: Eight groups of rats were assigned as follows: First, untreated normal control. Second, treated with 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), (75mg/kg), intraperitoneally (IP) once weekly for 3 weeks. Third, treated with oral AOLE (500mg/kg) once daily for 28 days. The 4 th group co-treated with AOLE and 5-FU as mentioned above. The 5 th group treated with oral daily doses of TCA (500mg/kg) for five days. The 6 th group treated with TCA for 5 days, from the sixth day with 5-FU for 3 weeks. Group 7 given TCA then, with AOLE. Group 8 received TCA, 5-FU and AOLE. Blood samples were withdrawn after 28 days from carotid vein. Liver tissues were histologically studied. Results: TCA showed neoplastic tissue features, greatly improved by treatment with AOLE and 5-FU combination. TCA significantly increased blood ALT, AST, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and acetyl CoA synthase (fatty acid synthase , FAS) activities, total bilirubin (T Bil) , triglycerides (TG), total glycosaminoglycans (TGAGs), alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), reduced serum total lipoprotein lipase (TLPL) activity. AOLE, combined with 5-FU produced a pronounced improvement in most of studied parameters. There is a concern regarding the level of noise produced by HFOV inside the NICU. Objective: To evaluate and define the noise intensity produced by the HFOV and the impact of the incubator on the transmission of noise in different places inside the NICU. Methods: Using a noise analyzer, the noise produced by the HFOV was measured in two setups: inside a quiet room, and inside the NICU during working hours. Measurements were repeated three times: first, inside and outside the tested incubator, and secondly, inside and outside the neighboring incubator. Each measurement was recorded against different HFOV amplitude and frequency settings. Each measurement lasted five minutes, where the highest and lowest readings were recorded every minute, and the mean values of noise intensity were calculated. Results: Noise level was increased by more than 40% after using HFOV (50 dB vs. 84 dB and 45 vs. 78) both inside and outside the incubator during the test. The mean noise levels recorded inside the NICU and the quiet room were 86(±5) dB and 78 (±2) dB respectively. The noise records progressively reduced as HFOV ▲P decreased to 20 cmH2O no matter the frequency used. Conclusions: The HFOV produces significant noise which is of concern. The noise was augmented within the tested incubator while reduced inside the neighboring incubator. Given the data presented, it is recommended that noise protective tools should be used for infants receiving respiratory support using this machine as well as neighboring infants who are near a HFOV.","PeriodicalId":124628,"journal":{"name":"American Journal of Medicine and Medical Sciences","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130309826","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Apart from inhibiting acetylcholinesterase (AChE), the induction of oxidative stress is one of the other molecular mechanisms implicated in OP-evoked toxicity. The present study evaluated the alleviating effect of Phyllanthus niruri, a flavonoid rich plant, on subacute CPF-evoked sensorimotor and cognitive changes in Wistar rats. Design: Thirty five adult male Wistar rats divided into five groups of seven rats were used for the study. Groups 1 and II were given soya oil (2 ml/kg) and CPF (10.6 mg/kg~1/8 th of LD50), respectively. Group III was administered methanol extract of Phyllanthus niruri (MEP) at 500 mg/kg only. Group IV was administered MEP (250 mg/kg) and CPF (10.6 mg/kg), 30 min later while group V was administered with MEP (500 mg/kg) and CPF (10.6 mg/kg), 30 min later. The regimens were administered by gavage once daily for 28 days during which periodic evaluation of sensorimotor and cognitive performances were carried out. Thereafter, the brain was evaluated for AChE activity and malonaldehyde (MDA) concentration. Results: CPF caused defi- cits in sensorimotor reflexes and cognition, increased brain MDA concentration and decreased AChE activity, which were all mitigated by MEPN. Conclusion: The study concludes that mitigation of sensorimotor and cognitive deficits elicited by CPF was mitigated by MEP partly due to the antilipoperoxidative and acetylcholinesterase restoration properties of its flavonoid constituent.","PeriodicalId":124628,"journal":{"name":"American Journal of Medicine and Medical Sciences","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124989520","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It may be isolated or associated with malformations, especially cardiac or alimentary. It may be discovered in infancy because of associated anomalies but often remains asymptomatic and discovered by chance in adult life. We report a 69 year old Nigerian woman found to have dextrocardia with situs inversus totalis while presenting for treatment for a totally unrelated problem. Her chest radiograph was however erroneously marked by the radiographer as normal resulting in a wrong report. The findings from an electrocardiogram and echocardiography confirmed the location of the heart in the right hemithorax and an abdominal sonogram showed the liver and gall bladder on the left side of the abdomen while the stomach and spleen were located on the right side. This report underscores the need for routine screening by individuals so that such congenital anomalies can be identified and surgical diagnoses in such patients made correctly to prevent surgical complications.","PeriodicalId":124628,"journal":{"name":"American Journal of Medicine and Medical Sciences","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127627198","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
