A correct acquisition and a proper method for interpreting the data acquired are required in order to design control devices or monitoring systems. This paper presents the design of a manual for biosignals acquisition (EMG, EEG, EOG and ECG) using the Biopac MP 45 for theoretical and experimental lessons as a part of the activities of a biomedical engineering laboratory. In order to recognize patterns and variations in the biosignals, the lessons include mathematical analysis for EEG and EMG signals and temporal analysis for EOG and ECG signals. Also, a database to perform postprocessing work are acquired. The results obtained with the implementation of these lessons by undergraduate students were satisfactory.","PeriodicalId":123628,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE ANDESCON","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130512414","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper proposes a new ultra low power ARM-based sensor (suisMOTE) for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs). An IEEE 802.15.4 transceiver Integrated Circuit (IC) provides the wireless connectivity, additionally a USB interface is also implemented to communicate the system with a computer. Moreover, since the platform is designed for low power applications it incorporates adaptive power modes in the microcontroller's peripherals and low power states in the radio to save energy. The management of these peripherals and radio was implemented to handle different energy saving levels (including shut-down). The results of the experimental measurements show the impact of the use of the power modes on the power consumption.","PeriodicalId":123628,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE ANDESCON","volume":"116 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121284543","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This algorithm considers the platform's odometry as the process and stereoscopic vision as the external observer. The tracking is implemented through stereoscopic vision and color object detection. Finally, the algorithm was tested by using Robotino® platforms from Festo, showing a good performance even with the loss of the observer.","PeriodicalId":123628,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE ANDESCON","volume":"14 48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124746352","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The inputs to ANN are real time data available from Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition and Distribution Management Systems (SCADA/DMS) databases. Due to a number of reasons, historical data stored in SCADA/DMS databases is affected by distorted measurements that can jeopardize the load forecasting results. This paper explores mid-term load demand forecasting using ANN considering distorted measurements in SCADA/DMS database. Proposed technique was applied to real-world measurements acquired from a 8.3 kV substation in Venezuela. ANN's forecasted results are compared with an exponential smoothing load forecasting procedure.","PeriodicalId":123628,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE ANDESCON","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132377435","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, current software engineering education approaches do not seem useful to teach a method like ATAM (Architecture Trade-off Analysis Method), designed for evaluation of architectural designs by competing stakeholders. This article presents a role playing game (RPG) to support teaching of ATAM to graduate informatics students, in classroom or distance learning by simulating stakeholders interaction. A case study was developed based on the Chilean National System of Tsunami Alarms (SNAM); the material includes case description and an initial proposal for architecture and utility tree, and to enable role-playing, also includes stakeholders' roles and competing goals,. Students assume some stakeholder role, prioritize and examine quality attributes, negotiate priority and difficulty of scenarios, and agree on a final architecture. The system has been piloted, and will be deployed to a graduate software architecture class in mid-July. Role playing games for software engineering education allow to exercise technically-based negotiation skills, and empirical studies like this one will gather applicability and usefulness information for its nuanced application to future cohorts.","PeriodicalId":123628,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE ANDESCON","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132532041","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For obtain such objective, the identification process is performed by using the formalisms, Volterra-Hybrid (VL) and Laguerre (LM), as proposed. Nevertheless, is noteworthy that this work is focused in identification the behavior of this reaction in resol-type resin synthesis, under conditions of molar excess and alkaline conditions in industrial batch reactors. In this study, all behavior patterns of the process are mathematically described. The process is started up by heating the reactants, up to reach 62°C in which is reached the activation energy, whereby is must stop the heating action due to manifesting exothermicity of the reaction. Then with this temperature within the reactor, the second stage starts up by applying water in the cooling jacket for smoothing the exothermicity degree, and minimize the risk at the system, in this stage the reactants should reach 102°C. Then the third phase is started up, such that the steam that not yet is part of the resin, it refluxes between a heat exchanger and the reactor. The goal of this activity is reach to compensate the exothermicity. Nevertheless this reflux action has an average duration of 45 min, and when reactor is cooled 101°C only the phenolic resin should be keep inside reactor, thereby the remainder of water must be excluded. Finally, around 100°C start the fourth phase, it which finishes when the reactor is cooling at the temperature of 50°C, and then all process is closed by adding around 1.5% of ethanol. The methodology applied has shown an acceptable fitting between model and data, which it means the model, presents important prospects as a tool to automate the exothermic batch reactors with strong challenges by using mathematical models, without the complexity of the chemical equations.","PeriodicalId":123628,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE ANDESCON","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128636248","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents a Hardware/Software Co-design of a probabilistic algorithm such as Kalman Filter (KF). In this case we present a solution for calculating the path length, which can be used for navigation techniques used in mobile robotics. The KF algorithm has been implemented and run on an Altera Ciclone II FPGA with a Nios II processor. To achieve this, first of all we had to do the modeling of our mobile system applying concepts of odometry, considering the readings of the encoders on our mobile platform Pioneer 3AT (P3AT). Then we proceeded to develop the probabilistic algorithm of the Kalman Filter from our system model using as additional measure the information of path length provided by the internal robot system. This probabilistic algorithm is based on the concept of sensor fusion, allowing us to get the better estimate of the value of the path length. At the end, we show a comparison of the algorithm performance developed in software and hardware independently.","PeriodicalId":123628,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE ANDESCON","volume":"47 4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116630142","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
