{"title":"Remediating family memories of Italian colonialism: Beyond the Frame as process and product","authors":"Simone Brioni, Gianmarco Mancosu","doi":"10.1177/00145858231172784","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1177/00145858231172784","url":null,"abstract":"The article analyzes Beyond the Frame (Oltre i bordi, 2023), a film based on Simone Brioni's fortuitous discovery of a family archive: a box of photographs taken in Italian East Africa in the 1930s by a distant relative. Beyond the Frame discusses colonial photography and visuality, as well as the material legacies of that past, challenging the gaze through which they framed the subjective and collective idea of Africa in Italian society. The article is divided into two parts, each of which discusses colonial photography and how Beyond the Frame observes, interprets, and reflects on how the legacy of colonialism shapes our present. In the first part, Brioni traces the process that led to the construction of a narrative that interweaves personal reflections and collective history. In the second part, Gianmarco Mancosu draws upon Ann Laura Stoler's work to discuss how the colonial archive and the remains of empire fashion our present, with a particular emphasis on photography and on colonial traces in the Italian cityscape. The article shows how the film works with as well as against the archive: how it enacts a process of resignification, thus modifying the original meaning of colonial pictures.","PeriodicalId":12355,"journal":{"name":"Forum Italicum","volume":"57 1","pages":"512 - 535"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2023-05-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44876724","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Seminar aims to promote scholarly research into the abovementioned fields while building educational programs inspired by them. In particular, we investigate the perspective of specific Italian transnationalism that identifies itself with the network of Italian diasporic literature disseminated worldwide. Our goal is not limited to research; we seek to pursue a proactive perspective. It is a fact that contemporary writers of Italian heritage are generally unaware of contemporary Italian writers and that many of them are not familiar even with the Italian canonical masterpieces from the past, and the same goes vice versa. For this reason, our mission is to create new bridges to fill these gaps. One of the purposes of the “Italian Diaspora Seminar” is the ambition to investigate the opportunity to create, both theoretically and pragmatically, an inclusive ground in which to detect and promote new connections among Italian, diasporic, and migrant Italian contemporary writers. Our goal is to reinforce a sense of community that will lay the foundations for the growth of inclusive, inter-dialoguing, and unified Italian transnational literature.","PeriodicalId":12355,"journal":{"name":"Forum Italicum","volume":"57 1","pages":"409 - 419"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2023-05-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44371625","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In reviewing the large number of references to Orpheus and various Orphic elements in the Rerum vulgarium fragmenta, Barański speculates “whether Petrarch’s Canzoniere may not in fact be the great overlooked Orphic text of the Western tradition” (411) and correctly argues (from my viewpoint) that the Canzoniere’s focus is “not on Laura but on the poet, not least because the woman is nothing but a projection of the self’s imagination” (420). In “Guido Cavalcanti and his First Readers” (443–469), Barański insightfully reviews Guido’s status as an auctoritas and Boccaccio’s recasting in Decameron VI.9 of the older poet in a positive light, in contrast to Dante’s negative portrayal of him as an implied heretic in Inferno 10. The last essay, perhaps the most provocative, explores “the question of the role played in the Middle Ages by obscenity and scatology” (606) and “the proper and improper use of language” (610) relative to Inferno 18’s excrement-besmirched flatterers, concluding that the canto’s contrapassi constitute “moral assertions of the ways in which [the sinfulness of panders, seducers, and flatterers] perverted the divine gift of speech” (613). This handsomely edited tome, which I heartily recommend to literary scholars and historians of the Trecento, concludes with a list of Barański’s publications, a general index, a useful index of references, and an index of manuscripts.","PeriodicalId":12355,"journal":{"name":"Forum Italicum","volume":"57 1","pages":"255 - 257"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2023-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"64958707","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Questo libro di Luzzatto forse non si distingue per apportare novità sull’omicidio di Rossa, ma è il primo studio che indaga sulle sue origini e lo colloca in una cornice storica e sociale che rende giustizia alla figura protagonista. Trovo che il saggio vada letto in parallelo con il seminale libro-inchiesta della figlia di Guido, Sabina Rossa, scritto insieme al giornalista Giovanni Fasanella: Guido Rossa, mio padre (Rizzoli, 2006, 199 pp., 8,80€), perché anche in quel caso non ci troviamo dinanzi a un “monumento di carta” in favore del papà ucciso, ma a un saggio investigativo ricco di rigore, forte di interviste con un cospicuo numero di ex terroristi e di ex servitori dello Stato, e lo sviluppo di una tesi degna. I due lavori, se letti insieme, mettono bene in controluce l’isolamento di Guido Rossa all’interno dell’Italsider, ma anche della CGIL. Un isolamento riconosciuto dallo stesso sindacato, con un celebre discorso di Lama, ma in definitiva ammesso anche dal consiglio di fabbrica dell’Italsider che avrebbe dovuto denunciare il postino delle BR anziché lasciare l’incombenza sulle sole spalle di Guido Rossa.","PeriodicalId":12355,"journal":{"name":"Forum Italicum","volume":"57 1","pages":"262 - 267"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2023-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"64958773","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"文学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
