Several utility measures are presented to minimize the customer's exposure to voltage sags. However, these measures cannot completely eliminate the impact of voltage sags on sensitive equipment. With the power system in normal operation, line-to-neutral, line-to-ground, and neutral-to-ground impedances are measured over a bandwidth of 20 Hz to 24 kHz. The measured impedance is presented as resistance and inductance which vary with frequency. Based on the measurements, additional calculations are performed to find the resistance and inductance of every conductor in the system. This paper presents results of a low voltage circuit breaker reliability survey achieved through use of available results from testing during preventive maintenance. A substantial number of test results were obtained to allow credible results for a few different circuit breaker categories. A similar set of results was published in a paper (M.J. Komblit) for the 1990 Industry Applications Society Conference. (3) How are neural networks superior to conventional methods? and (4) What type of results are produced by neural networks? Introductory knowledge needed for understanding the application of artificial neural networks is provided and numerous example applications are referenced. The paper is purposefully written without \"state-of-the-art\" terminology for the benefit of practicing engineers in facilities today who may not be familiar with neural networks. For good DC smoothing, the consideration of a sufficient control margin in many applications leads to a distinct reduction when evaluating harmonics. To investigate the general case including commutation and DC current ripple, IEEE-Std. 519 as well as the recent FFT-proposal deal with approximated angles. This simplification causes the problem of realization of the required DC mean current in cases of higher DC ripple. To avoid this, a modified version of the selection method is proposed. These customers do not experience interruptions or outages except under very rare circumstances. This is a significant advantage for these customers since they do not normally need to apply conventional UPS systems for protection of critical loads against outages. However, voltage sags, which occur whenever there is a fault on the power system, can cause dropout or mis-operation of sensitive equipment. Some type of protection may be needed for these loads to provide ride through support during voltage sags. This paper describes the methodology used in a research project sponsored by EPRI and Con Edison to evaluate the need for voltage sag ride through improvement for selected customers. Technologies that can supply the required ride through and application considerations were evaluated (SMES, motor-generator sets). However, the existing published literature does not describe the limitations of CLPs from system separation and loss of protective device coordination conditions, nor does it provide an analysis of short-circuit duties of medium voltage circuit breakers used with CLPs. The paper shows how these evaluations can be carried out. Considerations of high cost of replacements, the far greater loss of production due to lack of coordination and availability of a proven alternate solution should be included in an informed decision to use CLPs. Especially, co-generation systems have been introduced to many consumers such as hotels and hospitals. However, when a fault occurs on the transmission line, voltage on the internal power system drops instantaneously until its clearance. To enhance the load's reliability, a new switchgear system has been developed. This equipment consists of static switchgear applying thyristor, disconnecting switches, and a control circuit. This control circuit has functions to detect voltage drops and voltage synchronization. This equipment is installed in series with the circuit breaker which connects the buses of the consumer's own power generation system, and executes high speed tripping and reclosing when the voltage on the consumer's bus drops instantaneously. In this paper, artificial test results of this equipment is presented. From these results, it is confirmed that this equipment can restrain voltage drop of the important loads within one cycle by means of tripping the short circuit current within one cycle when the voltage drops under the setting value. Then, comparison between measured results and simulated results by EMTP is represented. From this comparison, it is confirmed that verification of this equipment's performance using EMTP is effective. Testing the transformer requires significant time, with associated costs. However, re-energizing a faulted transformer can lead to catastrophic failure. This scenario of a questionable transformer trip occurs too often, especially during the commissioning of new transformers and/or differential relays. Usually a differential relay false trip is caused by either incorrect settings or incorrect current transformer (CT) secondary lead connections. These conditions can cause false trips for external faults, or simply transformer loading. Some indication is needed that the relay is not operating as desired, before an incorrect trip happens. A potential problem can be discovered by monitoring the operating condition of the differential relay. Recently, a computer simulation revealed the possibility of low frequency oscillation after the connection of a cogeneration plant to the utility grid. Though there are several possible methods to improve the dynamic stability performance of the power system, a thorough understanding of the system characteristics and possible operating conditions is required before an appropriate measure can be proposed. In order to collect more operating information without affecting normal system operation, a programmable logic controller (PLC) based dynamic performance monitoring system (DPMS) was designed and installed at the tie substation. The recorded information will be valuable for power system analysis and/or PSS design.
