In Kenya, English and Kiswahili are used as the languages of communication in HIV and AIDS related issues. The literacy rate in Kenya stands at 87.4% but research has indicated that only 17% of the population speak and use English effectively while, 65% speak and understand Kiswahili. The use of Kiswahili in health communication cannot be underscored given the fact that majority of the Kenyan population can understand and interpret Kiswahili messages received in a communication string. The fight on HIV and AIDS includes use of songs and poetry. A number of Kenyan artists have invented ways of fighting this scourge in their use of music and this entails use of metaphor in their songs. One such musician is Jackoniah Oyoo who employs metaphor in his song Merimela. Human beings use metaphor to make sense of reality. Metaphor is defined as understanding and experiencing one kind of thing in terms of another. In this scenario, a concrete or clearly organized source domain, being more clearly related to physical and bodily experience, is used to talk about a more abstract and less clearly structured target domain. Metaphorical conceptualization of concepts is so natural and at times unconscious to human beings that they do not even realize that they are using metaphor. This article seeks to examine the metaphorical conceptualization and interpretation of the metaphors used in the song Merimela. The ubiquity nature of metaphors makes it possible for a number of metaphors to be used in the song Merimela. This article reveals how metaphor reflects and structures Kenyans understanding of reality particularly the fight against HIV and AIDS.","PeriodicalId":122430,"journal":{"name":"Scholars International Journal of Linguistics and Literature","volume":"53 36","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139532827","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Salinger’s novel The Catcher in the Rye (1987) explores the inner world of a 16-year-old middle school teenager, Holden Caulfield, during the three days he spends wandering from school to New York City. The anger and anxiety displayed in the protagonist strike a strong chord among young readers. Jonah, a surprising prophet in the Old Testament, refuses to follow God’s behest to prophesy in Nineveh and instead flees in the opposite direction. Abraham Maslow, a 20th-century American psychologist, draws inspiration from this narrative and develops the concept known as Jonah Complex, which he defines as the fear of one’s own greatness and the evasion of one’s own best potential. This article aims to analyze the character of Holden Caulfield in The Catcher in the Rye by drawing a comparison to the biblical story of Jonah and incorporating the psychological concept of Jonah Complex. By examining these elements together, it will be argued that Holden Caulfield exhibits symptoms of Jonah Complex, resulting in his fear of growth and his avoidance and disregard for his own prospect. Significantly, this study will draw from Abraham Maslow’s theories feasible solutions for addressing Holden’s Jonah Complex and ultimately achieving his self-actualization. Meanwhile, the paper will provide for teenagers like Holden with conducive significance as to one’s psychological health and personal growth.","PeriodicalId":122430,"journal":{"name":"Scholars International Journal of Linguistics and Literature","volume":"137 ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139176090","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper reviews the current situation of translation quality assessment at home and abroad and its application in translation teaching. Findings are that most of the current translation quality assessments are static, and the empirical research applied in translation teaching is not sufficient. Therefore, how to make the assessment model of translation quality keep pace with translation teachers and learners’ needs is an unavoidable issue that cannot be ignored in the future translation quality assessment research.","PeriodicalId":122430,"journal":{"name":"Scholars International Journal of Linguistics and Literature","volume":"62 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139178964","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The researches about the building of corporate images takes a large amount of shareholdings in academic area. Notwithstanding, there are only few scholars studying the portray of the profile from an intercultural perspective with “About us” section in company websites as the data. With the help of the corpus analytic tool AntConc, this paper intends to discuss the common and distinctive corporate identities of Fin-Tech unicorns in China and the US respectively which are manifested in high-frequency vocabulary, key words, communication strategy and style. It is discovered that the common identities include international financial technology companies, payment services provider and caring about consumers. Apart from this, CF takes the mixture of proactive and reactive strategy in building its images and tends to be more impersonal and hierarchical in communication style. The proactive strategy and casual communication style constitute to the construction of UF’s identities. From the cultural perspective, CF expresses all of the cultural dimensions specific in China except that of masculinity and femininity and the situation of UF is the same with CF. CF should endeavor to narrow the cultural gap thorough applying effective intercultural communication strategies and keep in line with the local culture. In this way, CF might be able to grab the chances along with the advance of globalization.","PeriodicalId":122430,"journal":{"name":"Scholars International Journal of Linguistics and Literature","volume":"11 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139178251","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

And due to the fact that the requirements of the translator of Islamic texts are a bit more complicated, the translation of some Arabic grammatical and rhetorical forms might pose a real challenge for non-native speakers of Arabic. Mastering the Arabic language, being it the Source Language of Islamic texts to be translated into any Target Language, is inevitable for any translator of such text types. The thematic translation of the Holy Quran by some translators having neither the SL nor the TL as their L1, makes their attempt even more challenging. Indeed, Arabic language is the mother tongue of Hilali; yet, not of Khan. This study highlights their rendering into English the definite article “al ال” modifying the Islam-Specific Nouns in selected Surahs: Al-Baqara (2:2), (2:3), (2: 43-45), (2:57), (2:198), al-Imran (3:3), Al-Maida (5: 2), At-Tauba (9:60), and Al-Furqan (25 :38).","PeriodicalId":122430,"journal":{"name":"Scholars International Journal of Linguistics and Literature","volume":"43 18","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-12-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139011817","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Under a White Sky: the Nature of the Future by American environmental journalist Elizabeth Kolbert is based on the relationship between man and nature, focusing on climate change. This article is based on the first part of chapter 1 of this book which describes the author's field investigation of river pollution in the United States, carp invasion of hydrological system and control measures. The paper hopes that more readers will recognize the destruction that human activities have caused to the Earth's ecosystem, and awaken more people's awareness of respecting nature and protecting ecology. Under the guidance of relevance translation theory, the author takes the optimal relevance principle as the translation criterion. Based on the cognitive context of the target audience, the translator adopts some translation skills including adding comments, meaning extension, part of speech conversion, division and combination, and word order adjustment, which will make the translation readable and in line with the Chinese language norms and expression habits.","PeriodicalId":122430,"journal":{"name":"Scholars International Journal of Linguistics and Literature","volume":"17 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139253788","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Considering the importance of this field of knowledge, the National University Commission and Joint Admission and Matriculation Board have made it mandatory for admitting students into Nigerian universities to study BA (Ed) English, BA English, Law, and a host of other related programs at both undergraduate and post graduate studies. This research investigates how social media hinders the academic performance of Literature-in-English students in Kano State. Much attention given to the social media platforms by the students plays a significant influence in taking them relatively far away from their studies, and consequently making them too reluctant towards their academic pursuit which results into a great number of failures. Therefore, this research investigates the influence of social media on the academic performance of Literature-in-English students in Kano State. The study adopts a survey design with questionnaire as data collection instrument. The population of the study is the students of Federal College of Education, Kano; Kano State College of Education and Preliminary Studies, Kano; and Aminuddeen College of Education, Kano. In ODL, students and teachers rely on digital platforms and technologies for learning, replacing traditional in-person interaction. DBL, a systematic technique to interpret digital signs similar to physical signs, has emerged to understand body language during digital communication. This study employed Husserlian phenomenology to explore teachers' experiences with students' digital body language during virtual consultations. Eight ODL teachers participated in web-based interviews, and the data were transcribed and analyzed using Colaizzi's (1978) method. The analysis revealed three themes: (1) Building Connections, (2) Threats to Connections, and (3) Varieties in Connections. These findings demonstrate that teachers perceived students' digital body language as positive and negative experiences. The insights gained from this study provide valuable input for teachers and administrators to enhance communication among students and teachers in the virtual learning environment, extending beyond the challenges of the new normal.","PeriodicalId":122430,"journal":{"name":"Scholars International Journal of Linguistics and Literature","volume":"65 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135977014","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
