Much evidence has supported that maintaining a high level of physical activity and cardiorespiratory fitness is associated with better cognitive performances across the lifespan. From childhood to adulthood, a high level of physical activity will have a positive impact on cerebral health. More specifically, executive performance seems to be preferentially affected by the level of fitness. This is partly because the prefrontal cortex, which governs these functions, seems to be very sensitive to physical activity levels. Today many neurophysiological mechanisms that explain the improvement of the cognitive performance are relatively well identified. A question then arises as to what is the optimal dose of physical activity to observe these effects on our brain. An example of successful aging is the example of the Master Athletes. This category of people who have been training and competing throughout their lives, demonstrate high levels of fitness induced by a high level of physical activity. Some studies seem to confirm that Master Athletes have better cognitive performances than sedentary or less active subjects. {"title":"It’s never too late to become an Ironman – The example of an 85-year-old triathlete","authors":"R. Lepers, P. Stapley","doi":"10.1051/SM/2019024","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1051/SM/2019024","url":null,"abstract":"This study aimed to analyse the performance of Hiromu Inada (HI), an 85-year-old triathlete, who became the oldest athlete in the world to complete the famous Hawaii Ironman triathlon consisting of a 3.8 km swim, 180-km cycle and 42-km run. HI swam in 1 h 51 min, cycled in 8 h 02 min, ran in 6 h 28 min and took 31 min for his transitions, for a total time of 16 h 53 min. Compared to the winner’s speed, HI was 55, 47 and 58% slower in swimming, cycling and running, respectively. For the same age-group category (i.e. 85–89 years), the age-related decline in performances of HI are more pronounced compared to the age-related decline in performance of shorter duration endurance single discipline such as 1500-m swimming, 1-h track cycling or marathon running. To our knowledge, the performance of HI represents the first written observation of a master athlete older than 85 years old who officially finished an ultra-endurance event. Thirty-nine recreational athletes (22 men, 17 women, age = 22 ± 4 years, height = 1.74 ± 0.15 m, body mass 70.2 ± 15.1 kg) performed five bilateral drop-landings from 50, 100 and 150% of maximum countermovement jump height, twice on the same day. Measures of reliability for initial contact angle, peak flexion angle and joint displacement for the hip, knee, and ankle joints, frontal-plane projection angles (FPPA), as well as inter-limb asymmetries in joint displacement were assessed. No systematic bias was present between trials (P>0.05). All kinematic measurements showed relative reliability ranging from large to near perfect (ICC = 0.52–0.96). Absolute reliability ranged between measures, with CV% between 1.0–1.6% for initial contact angles, 1.9–7.9% for peak flexion angles, 5.3–22.4% for joint displacement, and 1.6–2.3% for FPPA. Absolute reliability for inter-limb asymmetries in joint displacement were highly variable, with minimal detectable change values ranging from 6.0–13.2°. Prenant appui sur la littérature relative à la professionnalisation et l’autorégulation des fédérations face aux injonctions gouvernementales, cette étude se focalise sur les dimensions de la professionnalisation mises à contribution pour l’adaptation de SIS à la politique de la formation. Cette analyse repose sur une approche managériale à travers le modèle des 7S de McKinsey. Elle s’étend également aux parties prenantes de SIS en vue de faire ressortir les difficultés rencontrées par SIS dans la mise en œuvre de la politique de la formation pour le patinage artistique. Les entretiens menés et l’analyse de la documentation à disposition montrent comment la politique de la formation visant à garantir l’unité du suivi national est devenue l’une des principales préoccupations stratégiques de SIS entraînant des changements importants au niveau de ses structures et de son personnel, mais également au niveau du style de leadership. Les principales difficultés rencontrées par SIS sont liées à la conciliation de différentes logiques de la pratique sportive et à la coordination de plusieurs parties prenantes. Twenty youth swimmers completed a 100 m swim in a 25 m pool, swimming breaststroke or freestyle wearing the TritonWear® device, whilst being filmed above and below water with three cameras. 95% limits of agreement (95% LoA) and coefficient of variation (CV%) were used to calculate error. Systematic biases (P < 0.05) were found between the two systems only for distance per stroke during breaststroke. Freestyle metrics agreement ranged between 1.06% and 10.40% CV, except for distance per stroke (CV = 14.64%), and time underwater (CV = 18.15%). Breaststroke metrics ranged between 0.95% and 13.74% CV, except for time underwater (CV = 25.76%). The smallest errors were found for split-times, speed, stroke-count and stroke-rate, across both strokes (all < 5% CV). Among them, the Movement Imagery Questionnaire-Revised, translated and validated in French, is widely used by French speakers. However, it does not allow for the distinction between the two visual imagery perspectives (internal vs. external). The Movement Imagery Questionnaire-3 has been recently proposed in the English literature to differentiate between the ease of performing internal visual, external visual and kinesthetic imagery. The aim of this study was to translate and validate a French version of this questionnaire (MIQ-3f). Method: We examined the validity of constructs, internal consistency, and test-retest inter-rate reliability of the visual and kinesthetic items of the MIQ-3f in 272 healthy participants (Mage = 20.26 years, SD = 1.73). Results: The internal consistency (composite reliability scores ≥ 0.88 for the three subscales) and test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficients: 0.87 for visual internal imagery, 0.86 for visual external imagery, and 0.88 for kinesthetic imagery) of the MIQ-3f were satisfactory. The three-factor structure (with 4 items for each factor) was supported by confirmatory factor analysis. Pole carriage could affect the speed acquired during the approach and at the take-off. This study investigated different types of runs performed randomly by young male and female expert athletes: maximal sprint, maximal pole carriage run, maximal run-up with simulated pole plant and competition situation. Speed profile was determined with a radar gun and spatiotemporal parameters were recorded for the last 20 m of the approach with the Optojump Next system. For both genders, mechanical variables were compared using two-way ANOVAs with repeated measurements. Pole carriage represents the main cause of speed decrease for both men (−5.8%) and women (−6.2%). A step rate decrease during pole carriage was pointed out with an increase of contact time for both men and women. Significant speed decrease was observed for women at the take-off compared to pole plant simulation (−4.3%), while not for men. Convolvulus batatas L.) is a perennial, herbaceous climber with tuberous edible roots, and is a major leguminous crop of global importance with widespread applicability and economic value of its products in the global market. The aim of the presented investigations was to review the experimental articles and patents referring to the application of sweet potato-based nutritional products for athletes published in the period 2000–2020. Altogether, 69 patents and 12 experimental articles were included in the analysis. The statistical analysis showed that similar number of inventions was patented in periods 2000–2005, 2006–2010, 2011–2015 and 2016–2020. Generally, the inventors patented food supplements in different forms (e.g. bars, beverages, powders, snacks, tablets). Other authors invented methods of extraction and application of sweet potato constituents such as carbohydrates (i.a. slowly digestible starch) and polyphenols (i.a. anthocyanins). The empirical articles evidenced wide acceptability of sweet potato products due to their beneficial effects on health and performance such as improvement of cardiopulmonatory functions, prolongation of physical performance and recovery from fatigue.
