There are extensive researches on teaching quality control and development of assistive tools for teaching monitoring; however, none of them focuses on monitoring the execution of assessment. This paper describes the model of assessment execution monitoring, its implementation, and outcomes of the implementation. The model encompasses four parts; reminding, assessment report analysis, submission status reporting, and remedial action status checking. The assessment report analysis was carried out manually for the first three semesters and then transformed to automatic way when TReS, an online web-based system was developed. The percentage of academic staff submitted test 1 mark increased drastically when the model was implemented with the use of TReS.","PeriodicalId":119785,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 9th International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123108996","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An effective pedagogy and assessment help influence the quality of the fresh graduate. However, there are still a number of students who fail to get a job due to the lack of transferable skills even though they are considered experts in their fields. Additionally, students only gain average transferable skills during the course of their studies. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to explore the perception of transferable skills among students in the Malaysian TVET institutions. A survey was conducted and distributed to students from various Malaysian Technical Universities (MTU) which included University Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM), University Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM), University Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) and University Malaysia Pahang (UMP). The total number of respondents were 439. The findings of this study showed that students agreed and supported the integration of transferable skills in TVET programs. In conclusion, students had a good perception toward the transferable skills and this ensured that all fresh graduates would develop good quality transferable skills which were integrated into their programs.","PeriodicalId":119785,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 9th International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125369885","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the most formidable issues is the “digital gap,” the lack of access to digital devices, which affects student performance in introductory programming courses. This inaccessibility can lead to inadequate computer literacy that creates a secondary digital gap, a higher level of the digital gap, and results in poor academic performance. Few studies have explored the effect of this secondary digital gap on academic performance. This study examines the relationship between performance and a selected set of variables concerning learning challenges in introductory programming courses on Java involving 140 undergraduate students. Analyses based on correlation and hierarchical linear regression indicate that confusion regarding the different programming interfaces is the most significant determinant of academic performance. Moreover, skill in online searches, and access to desktop and tablet devices were found to be associated with student grades on assignments and exams. We provide recommendations to adapt multimedia tools and pedagogical solutions to mitigate the impact of the secondary digital gap on college students.","PeriodicalId":119785,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 9th International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115760770","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Students learn in various ways, such as by observing, listening, acting, reasoning, memorizing, and visualizing. Students also think in different ways, and critical thinking is a desirable competency in academic achievement. Critical thinking may be influenced by individual learning preferences. The learning styles and critical thinking skills of engineering students are factors that contribute to how they learn to achieve the learning outcome and to their readiness to enter the market. Existing technology and workplace trends require engineers who are equipped with critical thinking skills, such as solving problems, making decisions, and understanding of technical and engineering concepts for a successful future. Therefore, this paper discusses the analyses of the learning styles and critical thinking skills of 315 engineering students from Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia. The Index of Learning Styles was adopted to measure the learning styles of the students, whereas a questionnaire for critical thinking was used to determine the critical thinking skills of the students in four dimensions: analysis, evaluation, induction, and deduction. Result shows that the engineering students are more inclined to be visual than verbal learners and they have received moderate critical thinking scores in each dimension. The result also indicates that no relationship exists between the learning styles and critical thinking skills of the engineering students.","PeriodicalId":119785,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 9th International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127216130","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, many researchers and organizations create training environments for professionals to have hands-on activities. However, in most cases, they are created manually and only focus on features, without a pedagogic point of view. This research proposes an interactive training interface aiming to bring a better interaction inspired by the web-based learning theory. Moreover, it runs on top of a system that can setup the training environment automatically and perform unmanned cyber attacks. In this paper, we first define requirements for a modern elearning system for cybersecurity training. We then describe how a defense training system is designed and implemented in this research. After that, a comparison of the implemented interface with the theory of interaction in web-based learning is presented. Based on this theory, a survey is conducted on participants with various cybersecurity background levels to evaluate the effectiveness of the training, and what participants expect from hands-on cybersecurity defense training programs. The time for environment creation is also evaluated.","PeriodicalId":119785,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 9th International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126000845","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In fact, several improvements were made in experiment classes and graduate studies based on CDIO concepts; Conceive, Design, Implement and Operate. In this paper, a new engineering education trial through an external contest is introduced. The CDIO concept is extremely activism and it is considered that engineering education based on CDIO could be carried out more effectively by practical experience trough external contests such as Robocon. This time the Micro Hydro Power Generation Idea Contest was experimentally selected for the Electrical and Electronic Engineering department at KTC. The results showed that the contest contained plenty of CDIO elements. The students experienced irreplaceable activities that considered real regional needs, and as a result their various skills and thoughtfulness grew noticeably. Therefore, it was concluded that participation in external contests is very effective for CDIO initiative conscious engineering education. It is also necessary for educators to work with companies, municipalities and citizens to prepare many contests as a field of growth for students.","PeriodicalId":119785,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 9th International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133921469","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The level of students' understanding can be identified from the assessment of the course outcomes (CO) as it used to indicate the expected knowledge that the students supposed to acquire at the end of the semester, and it shall be outlined according to the Bloom's Taxonomy. Therefore, this paper presents the level of students' competency of the Statics course in a local Malaysian university. The Statics course was chosen as it is a core course for the first- year students in this program. The measurement of students' understanding level was developed through Rasch measurement model. The results obtained were assessed against the course outcomes (CO) maps for consistency. The study showed that Rasch measurement model can classify grades into course outcomes (CO) more accurately and can segregate the students based on their understanding level. The results from this measurement can provide useful information regarding the students' capabilities in certain fundamental concepts that will be used in the other pre-requisite or co-requisite courses such as Dynamics and Mechanics of Materials.","PeriodicalId":119785,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 9th International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122010089","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
