With the aim of bridging the theoretical concept to a hands-on practice in engineering education, a more structured framework is introduced in the FYP module as a guideline for students in completing their proposed project. In this paper, we discussed a project by our students, titled “Daily Plant Care System” which was designed using Arduino microcontroller based on the proposed FYP framework.","PeriodicalId":119785,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 9th International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120934800","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It's difficult for English teachers to diversity of students' motivation into account within their restricted time of their classes. We consider that the fundamental solution is to raise learner autonomy. We defined that the meaning of “to teach autonomous learning” is to help a learner to have the ability to take charge of one's own learning by oneself. In this paper, a new education model was proposed to teach autonomous learning by using expectancy motivation theory. A new instructional method suited for the new model was tested to create autonomous English learners over the course of 5 years. In this report, the effectiveness of the education method was also discussed by a comparison of successful learners and general students.","PeriodicalId":119785,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 9th International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123869842","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A descriptive survey study was conducted using quantitative approach, involved a subject from Malaysian Technical Institution across Peninsular Malaysia. A total of 360 students were randomly selected using stratified random sampling technique, due to the nature of the population distribution and geographical reason. The data were collected using a set of questionnaire, developed and adopted from several sources. The data was analysed using descriptive and inferential statistic. The result; several elements of students' characteristics indicated high mean score such as self-worth, motivation and sense of responsibility; thus, students' characteristic was significantly correlated to effective supervision (r=.789). It is concluded that a successful relationship between supervisor and supervisee is correlated to students' personality characteristics, thus needs further study to confirm its contribution to an effective supervision. The outcome of this study contributes to the practice of effective supervision.","PeriodicalId":119785,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 9th International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122170604","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These projects are typically research-based or development- based projects. One of the challenges is to achieve fair and efficient examination of students' work in terms of reporting and the quality of work. The reports are typically examined by the students' supervisors and examiner(s). The problem arises when there is inconsistency in scores, as most evaluation can be subjective. A set of rules and regulations is proposed to work towards a more efficient implementation and assessment process in this paper.","PeriodicalId":119785,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 9th International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131623964","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The evaluation for FYP is based on multitude of ways which are progress reports, oral presentation on research proposal, written proposal, manuscript, poster presentation and dissertation. With this amount of submissions and evaluations that needs to be done, a more efficient approach that requires paperless and time-saving system is considered. This paper presents an online management and assessments aspects of students' final year project work using Moodle for chemical engineering undergraduate programme. Moodle is used as a one-stop center to coordinate, manage students' submissions and evaluation marks, and conduct online evaluation. Additionally, the monitoring of students' submissions progress can also be made with the available options in Moodle. A preliminary survey was conducted after it was used for one semester. It can be concluded that by using a Moodle based-systematic approach, the lecturers are positively inclined to use Moodle as the management tool for FYP.","PeriodicalId":119785,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 9th International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123560888","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Some would believe that everyone has the capability to create or design a product or solution based on his or her knowledge and experiences. Engineering Design Process (EDP) steps can be described from the main steps to the most specific and detailed process. Each step involves a special task or strategy to meet the goal of the task. The EDP is an iterative process in nature. As the solution to a design problem develops, the engineering designer will be continually refining the design. The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between creativity and engineering design projects among undergraduate engineering students. A non-experimental correlational research design was used in the study. Twelve engineering year project teams in the College of Engineering at Colorado State University were selected and voluntarily involved for the study. The students' creativity was measured using Torrance Test of Creative Thinking (Figural A) (TTCT) while the tool to assess the engineering design outcome is adapted from the Student Product Assessment Form (SPAF). The results indicated that only TTCT — Resistance to Premature Closure had significant correlation with the SPAF — Technical Approach and Final Design Solution, r (11) = −.58, p = .048. There was no statistical significance found for the other pairs. Overall, the analysis of correlation indicated very low, negative, and non-significant correlation between creativity and design outcome, r (11) = −.012, p = .971. This led to the summary that in this study, the design team creativity level had no association with the engineering design outcome score.","PeriodicalId":119785,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 9th International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127347306","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The framework has been introduced to improve the technical skills among the engineering students. In Malaysia, this framework has been adopted in Malaysia on late 2000's by Taylor university, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and University Teknologi MARA (UiTM). However, there is a conflict while adopting CDIO since the Malaysia Education system in Institute of Higher Learning (IHL) and Engineering Accreditation Council (EAC) already adopted the OBE as core of implementation for education system. Hence, it is important to ensure that CDIO and OBE can complement each other to improve the graduate performance. This paper will propose the mapping of CDIO skills set and Program outcome (PO) of EAC so as to provide general guidelines for CDIO implementer to conform the need of EAC based on PO. The guidelines facilitate the CDIO implementer in Malaysia to provide a better approach of observing the PO attainment of graduate based on CDIO skills set.","PeriodicalId":119785,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 9th International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128317992","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Identifying student learning profile may help improve successful rate in engineering program. An instrument that can be used for reliably assessing the cognitive- affective-conative profile of students is needed. This paper report the development and initial testing of the questionnaire (CACQ). Quantitative procedures were used. The set of questionnaire was distributed to 207 final year engineering students after being reviewed by four experts. Each of the constructs reached a good reliability value. Strong and positive correlations were established between learning strategy, emotion, conation and achievement motivation measures. The strength of correlations between the constructs also provides an indicator to the unidimensionality of the constructs. This new questionnaire is a promising measure for assessing the cognitive, affective and conative profile of engineering students.","PeriodicalId":119785,"journal":{"name":"2017 IEEE 9th International Conference on Engineering Education (ICEED)","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115037590","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
