El analisis se centra en distinguir las maneras en que se realizaron las convocatorias a participar, los canales y modos de circulacion de informaciony los desplazamientos de personas por la jurisdiccion. Buscamos identificar, ademas, los procesos de toma de decisiones, las formas de repartir las tareas y la estructura interna del movimiento. Nuestro interes radica en reconstruir los significados de las practicas y las visiones que sobre el orden colonial tenia la poblacion de la jurisdiccion de Jujuy a fines del siglo XVIII.","PeriodicalId":118537,"journal":{"name":"Memoria Americana. The combination of images and texts in theseartifacts and the direct participation of wisemen of Nahutl origin allow theconsideration of visual representations of medicinal herbs as statements thatretain certain autonomy, despite being included within the genres of Europeanrepresentation. This peculiarity strains the alleged subordination of visual signifiers to the imperative of alphabetical writing, making it possible toassess the presence of heterogeneous representations within the context ofMesoamerican literacy in the sixteenth century.","PeriodicalId":118537,"journal":{"name":"Memoria Americana. The Spanish-Creole, Indigenous and Afro-descendant settlersconstituted the population of the small town that would acquire greatereconomic and political importance over time. Aiming at generating newinformation about the Indigenous and Afro-descendant population presentin the town and city of Parana during the second half of the 18th centuryand the first decades of the 19th century, archival work is carried out aroundecclesiastical documents and the population census of Parana of 1824. The contexts of application of the different socio-ethnic categories used in thedocuments are discussed, as well as the particular characteristics of thedifferent sectors that make up the population of Parana are analyzed.","PeriodicalId":118537,"journal":{"name":"Memoria Americana. Using techniques developed due to environmental conditions, the mining activity provoked impact on the landscape and environment which can be identified as archaeological records at present. Destruction of the vegetation cover, radical changes in the natural form of the land, the silting and dryness of watercourses are some of the consequences the extraction process caused. Nowadays, the old exploited areas present evidences of a natural recovery, placing the archaeological remains as elements to be preserved, both from a patrimonial and environmental perspective. Inthe early 1930s the aphorism “There are no good mines without lawsuits” wasused to invoke the string of disputes the mining interest aroused in local life-to the point that even a governor had to resign after the murder of a Spanishminer. Schiaffini","doi":"10.34096/mace.v26i2.6214","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.34096/mace.v26i2.6214","url":null,"abstract":"The current paper studies how some segments of the population of Cerro de San Pedro, a mining town in central Mexico, perceived the alternation of marked cycles of exploitation and non-exploitation of mineral deposits in the area during 1950 and 2009. Fragments of interviews conducted between 2007 and 2009 are transcribed, in order to analyze how the inhabitants of the region explain to others and themselves these cycles of investment and divestment. Undoubtedly tied to the world economy, those cycles affected them throughout the 20th century. Moreover taking into account the current problem of Cerro de San Pedro, immersed in a conflict related to the opposition to open-pit gold mining, an evaluation of the elements of an alleged “mining tradition” that still have an impact on contemporary local disputes is presented.","PeriodicalId":118537,"journal":{"name":"Memoria Americana. The characteristics of three settlements,placed in a small portion of the Puna landscape, which developed around goldmining are presented and compared in this paper; their different historicaltrajectories are also studied since a degree of variability in the archaeologicalevidence was observed in each case.
