This paper aims to provide the reader with a concise summary of the tactics deployed by Pinochet’s government, as well as the effects that those tactics have produced on the media ecology of Chile. This article will advance the hypothesis that the development of a “culture of fear” in Chile during Pinochet’s rule has inflicted lasting structural damage on the way that modern Chileans interact with their media. Today, Chilean society faces a crisis of political apathy, and can serve as an important case study for the long-term implications of the proliferation of counternarrativistic strategies across the global media landscape.

A number of these crises were high profile and reported by new agencies and environmental activists on a national and international level. As a result, Japanese culture and media has been influenced by images of pollutions' effect on the body and developed into robust Japanese environmental movements and policies. This essay builds on the environmental analysis of Hayao Miyazaki's films, but offers a counter perspective arguing that the body horror of Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away is more representative of Japanese pastoral nostalgia (which suggests a feeling of cultural loss and a rejection of a possible return human-nature harmony) rather than pure environmentalism.

Yet, the extent to which the Jesuit education programmes between 1630 and 1670 clashed with Indigenous culture is still heavily debated amongst historians. This essay will argue that Jesuit education initiatives clashed with Innu and Wendat culture to a greater extent regarding teaching methods and curriculum and yet, will also highlight isolated pockets of accommodationist attitudes. Whilst this essay will also examine the Ursuline nuns, it will primarily analyse Jesuit education methods, curriculum and accommodation towards Innu and Wendat boys. Overall, despite predominantly targeting young boys, the content and approach of Le Jeune’s religious education policies had significant repercussions throughout Innu and Wendat society, regardless of gender or age. \u0000 \u0000[1] Anderson, The Betrayal of Faith: 8-9; Carol Blackburn, Harvest of souls: the Jesuit missions and colonialism in North America, 1632-1650 (Montreal, McGill-Queen’s University Press, 2000), 31. \u0000[2] Bruce Trigger, The children of Aataentsic: A history of the Huron People to 1660 (Kingston: McGill-Queen’s University Press, 1976): 263-4; James P. The rhetorical utilization of these "American values" is far from a recent development. The Spanish-American War of 1898, despite having been a short-lived conflict of less than a year, is significant in understanding the construction of America as a moral empire. Anchoring themselves in Jefferson’s “Empire of Liberty” and in the concept of Manifest Destiny, imperialists utilized the language of liberty to justify not only America’s entrance into the conflict, but also its further domination of Cuba. In spite of having waged war under the banner of Cuba Libre, Americans curtailed the liberty of Cubans, acting as arbiters of liberty and of Cuba’s destiny.

Founded in response to the misogyny of the American Civil Rights Movement and racism in the Women’s Liberation movement, Black women sought to create an organization that championed issues specific to their experiences. The TWWA was unique in its approach to activism, operating under “Triple Jeopardy,” an understanding that women of colour were oppressed at the intersection of race, gender, and class, and sought to unite women from around the world through a collective understanding of oppression. Emerging out of their marginalization within other movements for social justice, the TWWA developed a unique intersectional and internationalist ethos and organizing strategies rooted in their lived experiences that would have a profound impact on contemporary activist movements.
This essay seeks to explore various visual representations of Sky Woman across cultures and time, and what they may reveal about ways of being in the world. As stories, and creation stories in particular, inform who and how we are, they hold tremendous import on various social phenomena. Through the comparison of stories of Sky Woman with the Christian Book of Genesis, this essay will examine both the overt and covert teachings inlayed within these creation stories, and the legacies such teachings leave behind. While the Book of Genesis lays out a world of hierarchies, competition, alienation from nature, and the deprivileging of women, stories of Sky Woman hold teachings of responsibility, respect, balance, and the empowerment of women. Through such stark comparison, it becomes clear how creation stories inform ways of being in the world, as well as the implications such perspectives have. For example, through stories of Sky Woman, Indigenous womanhood is held as sacred and empowered. Teachings of cooperation and balance intrinsic to Sky Woman’s story emphasize cooperation between and balance amongst genders within Indigenous communities. Further, Sky Woman is often depicted as the original Mother and therefore positions motherhood as a source of strength, creation, and life-giving. As such, Indigenous motherhood resists patriarchal forms of mothering that rest on understandings of sacrifice and submission.[1] Further, in understanding the land as Sky Woman herself, land necessarily becomes feminine, alive, and capable of storytelling. As such, land becomes relation, an integral source of self, and an important site of healing, all of which necessitate its caretaking. Contemporarily, Sky Woman’s teachings are used as a tool of resurgence, female empowerment, and decolonization, with an emphasis on the future of Indigenous peoples. As is revealed in the paintings this essay explores, Sky Woman embodies the past, present, and future to inform a way of being in the world that is guided by cooperation, respect, balance, and importantly, the feminine. \u0000 \u0000[1] Lina Sunseri, “Sky Woman Lives on: Contemporary Examples of Mothering the Nation,” Canadian Woman Studies 26, no. 3 (2008): 21-25.

Gay Nazis 同性恋纳粹

Consequently, these histories focus primarily on left-wing progressive homosexual advocacy groups like Hirschfield’s WhK (Wissenschaftlich-humanitäres Komitee; German for Scientific-Humanitarian Committee). Comparatively, less attention is paid to a smaller, but nevertheless significant cohort of right-wing male homosexual activists — or masculinists — like Adolf Brand and Hans Blüher who rejected notions that same-sex desiring men constituted an effeminate “third sex”. In their view, homoeroticism was the ultimate expression of virility and male camaraderie, and they fused this idea with nationalist, racialist, and antisemitic views in order to formulate a right-wing position against repealing Paragraph 175, Germany's anti-sodomy law. World War One (WWI) was a crucial event which allowed homosexual veterans to affirm their desires more boldly without being labelled as weak and unmanly — their war experience allowed them to defend their reputation as macho and patriotic men. This paper investigates the historical, social, and psychological reasons why many early Nazis, especially those who joined the SA, were attracted to Brand and Blüher’s ideas. The SA’s relative tolerance for homosociality provided a safe space for many homosexuals in the movement. However, this was extremely problematic for the political side of the Nazi Party whose hegemonic heterosexual masculine image came under question after a series of SA scandals in the early 1930s, and ultimately took deadly actions to quash non-heteronormative elements of the movement.

The project has firmly adopted the New Urbanist planning principles that have resulted in a starkly different neighborhood than what had existed before. As a result, it provides an excellent case study for how social housing has been shaped by the Modernist and New Urbanist planning movements. This paper argues that New Urbanism has emerged out of the need to solve the problems in social housing created by Modernist urban renewal. This will be supported by a brief history of Modernism and urban renewal’s roots, its effects on Regent Park, the neoliberal transition in social housing in Canada, and the New Urbanist application to Regent Park.

This strategy draws attention to indigenous perspectives on economic and cultural sustainability, as well as to the threat posed to indigenous continuity by colonialist legacies, past and present. In Jackson’s films, the excerpts from Western Art Music comprising the musical score “takes over” the narrative; their sound is pleasant, but unseen, insidious and triumphant, ultimately a duplicitous and malevolent dominating force. In my view, the selections from Western Art Music function as a metaphor for the unseen, insidious and ever-present forces of colonialism that control the negative behaviors and lives of the indigenous protagonists in the film narrative. This metaphor functions on both macro (formal and performative) and micro (melodic and chordal) levels. On a meta-narratival level, Jackson’s soundtracks draw attention to contemporary audience’s de-sensitization to the use of sonic repertoires in popular cinema and to the normalization of the congruence of sound and musical material and film narrative. Jackson’s adaptation of the musical material suggests that in order to shed colonialist legacies, we must also interrogate their often physical heard, but cognitively and critically unremarked, accompanying soundtracks.
