The criteria provided by this model are important factors in considering proper expert system institutionalization. These factors should be considered when planning the expert system's development. For example, the skills of the person or group performing the maintenance of the expert system may affect the selection and ease of use of the expert system shell, if applicable. Additionally, if a shell is used, distribution issues of the expert system should be considered up front in terms of the costs of run-time licenses and other related considerations.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":117336,"journal":{"name":"[1991] Proceedings of the IEEE/ACM International Conference on Developing and Managing Expert System Programs","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133230543","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The KBS (knowledge-based system) queries a user with regard to critical issues in a software development plan to determine the chance of the project succeeding. The prototype system is designed to be used by individuals familiar with the situation in which the development effort will occur. They include: (1) a systems professional with the ability to access information regarding the user community, (2) a user with the ability to access the system, such as a user liaison, or (3) any member of management who understands the project and the environment/resources that would be used.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":117336,"journal":{"name":"[1991] Proceedings of the IEEE/ACM International Conference on Developing and Managing Expert System Programs","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115458615","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

UMS is an expert system building tool dedicated to real-time embedded applications. This system allows the user to specify knowledge using a set of linguistic approximations, without being conscious of data-processing internally performed. Supported by a development of the axioms of probability, an interval-based framework for managing uncertainty is presented. As generally admitted, an interval number is used to capture features of fuzziness and incompleteness. However, a new parameter, called the degree of dependency, is shown to be naturally induced by M.J. Frank's (1979) family of triangular norms.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":117336,"journal":{"name":"[1991] Proceedings of the IEEE/ACM International Conference on Developing and Managing Expert System Programs","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129322000","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this respect, large expert systems are shown to have many similarities with other large software systems. The advanced computing concepts, rapid prototyping approach, and general research and development aspects of expert systems have sometimes led to the neglect of fundamental principles of software engineering. These principles are creating and maintaining interfaces between program modules, the use of specification languages, automatic code generation, long-term maintenance, and the use of commercial products. A large-scale expert system currently in advanced development is used as an example.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":117336,"journal":{"name":"[1991] Proceedings of the IEEE/ACM International Conference on Developing and Managing Expert System Programs","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124250298","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This distinction is extended to attributes, so that attributes also reflect both knowledge and data. The objective is to make the expert system more knowledgeable of, and responsive to, its own execution characteristics. Active databases are discussed with particular focus being given to execution determinism, basic principles of fuzzy logic and temporal issues, and various potential knowledge attributes that capture temporal execution and usage characteristics. The fuzzy interpretation of those characteristics in constraining the activity behind an active expert database system is discussed.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":117336,"journal":{"name":"[1991] Proceedings of the IEEE/ACM International Conference on Developing and Managing Expert System Programs","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122634845","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the past five years, the Advanced Technology Branch has developed and delivered over a dozen expert systems to its customers, resulting in millions of dollar in cost savings. The models do not require a priori probabilities, and they provide measures of uncertainty. The two models were applied to a set of brainstem auditory evoked potential waveforms. Both had lower absolute error rates than discriminant analysis, although they yielded large numbers of uncertain waveforms. The fuzzy set approach may be less sensitive to the exact form of the membership functions.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":117336,"journal":{"name":"[1991] Proceedings of the IEEE/ACM International Conference on Developing and Managing Expert System Programs","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-09-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131324669","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The research reported is aimed at establishing a quantitative approach to assisting managers in identifying these risks. Results of empirical studies and new automated tools are discussed.
