The first experiment investigated perception of vibro-tactile \"roughness\" (created using amplitude modulated sinusoids), and the results indicated that roughness could be used as a parameter for constructing Tactons. The second experiment is the first full evaluation of Tactons, and uses three values of roughness identified in the first experiment, along with three rhythms to create a set of Tactons. The results of this experiment showed that Tactons could be a successful means of communicating information in user interfaces, with an overall recognition rate of 71%, and recognition rates of 93% for rhythm and 80% for roughness.","PeriodicalId":117050,"journal":{"name":"First Joint Eurohaptics Conference and Symposium on Haptic Interfaces for Virtual Environment and Teleoperator Systems. Although methods for 3D visualization and remote navigation of the catheter are emerging and subject to tests, still precise positioning is merely the result of intense training and high skills of the performing surgeon. A novel assistance-system intends to provide measured force data from the tip of a guide wire and display them as feedback to the performing surgeon. It is intended to build a simulator giving a first impression of the feel and touch of such an assistance. For this simulator a haptic display is needed. This article refers to design methods and the actual structure of this display. It has to be capable applying torque and force on the catheter. General technical requirements are presented. The realized prototype itself is shown and the experience made is presented.","PeriodicalId":117050,"journal":{"name":"First Joint Eurohaptics Conference and Symposium on Haptic Interfaces for Virtual Environment and Teleoperator Systems. Unlike hand tools, lasers do not provide haptic feedback. With advances in augmented reality, haptics, and surgical robotics, it may now be possible to add the sense of touch to non-contact surgical lasers. This manuscript presents our initial work towards developing such a tactile feedback laser system. Two prototypes were constructed that allow an operator to feel surfaces using only light but are not yet equipped with lasers powerful enough to cut. Based on optical distance measurements, the prototypes synthesize haptic feedback through a robotic arm held by the operator when the focal point of the laser is coincident with a real surface, giving the operator the impression of touching something solid. To the best of our knowledge, no other device has been built that provides the sense of touch with a laser.","PeriodicalId":117050,"journal":{"name":"First Joint Eurohaptics Conference and Symposium on Haptic Interfaces for Virtual Environment and Teleoperator Systems. This device relies on a light parallel architecture connecting the base of the robot to the mobile platform manipulated by the user. It is dimensioned and optimized to fit design requirements associated with computer aided design or virtual sculpting. The design methodology relies on a geometric and static optimization which takes into account technological constraints associated with the main off the shelf components. The control scheme of this device is also described. Finally, feedback obtained from first integration tests are presented.","PeriodicalId":117050,"journal":{"name":"First Joint Eurohaptics Conference and Symposium on Haptic Interfaces for Virtual Environment and Teleoperator Systems. A unified interface provides easy linking of various physical models with spatial constraints, and the graphical contents related to the models as well. When designing devices for haptic communication or haptic input devices for HCI, it makes sense firstly to look to psychophysics as an informant. However, to gain insight into tactility as both experience and meaning, it may also be beneficial to look at the cultural and social context of touch. Also, the author explains how it is possible to explore this field with the help of low-tech prototypes and methodologies more common in art and design.","PeriodicalId":117050,"journal":{"name":"First Joint Eurohaptics Conference and Symposium on Haptic Interfaces for Virtual Environment and Teleoperator Systems.
