However, Roman law is far from being as concise and strict as that of the Bible. Whilst not forgetting the option of membrum pro membro , the interpretation of Latin examples tells us that punishments tended to be comparable and not equal, materially speaking, to the harm caused. The linguistic analysis of talio , derived from the indefinite talis and the correlative structure ( quale scelus, talis poena ) in which it appears, leads us to see this feminine substantive of action as a neologism of proportional reference that encouraged Roman law to evolve towards substitute punishments that were less gory. In order to understand the spirit of the Law of Talion, we must take into consideration its form, which above all is made up of the indefinite talis as a correlative of qualis referring to the damage or harm caused.","PeriodicalId":11579,"journal":{"name":"Emerita","volume":"85 1","pages":"223-239"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2017-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46926071","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is assumed that the Latin blessing formulae, as reproduced in the comedies by Plautus, underwent discursisation that resulted in its reinterpretion as a routinized expression of gratitude, and, finally, as greeting formulae ( di tibi dent quae uelis!; di te ament! ). Firstly, an analysis of the dialogue openings that include this particular wording of the salutatio ritual is conducted. Moreover, the study offers additional insights into the Roman reciprocal donation system, which has been related to the communicative routines of thanking and greeting. In conclusion some general remarks are made about the nature of the repragmaticalization process and its results.","PeriodicalId":11579,"journal":{"name":"Emerita","volume":"85 1","pages":"261-287"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2017-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47377986","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We note its literary sources, and explain the author’s methodology and linguistic conception regarding the etymology and meaning of words. According to the underlying structure and scientific frame in which the text is supported, Isidore distinguishes wild asses and wild horses (onagri and equiferi) from the domestic ones (asini and equi). He divides asses into smaller working donkeys (aselli) and big asses (asini Arcadici), and horses into a vulgar class for pulling carts (ueredus), including a variety of minor size (mannus), and another class of noble saddle-horses, of which he mentions eight races according to their geographical origin. Among the crossbreeds he mentions the mule (mulus), the hinny (burdo) and the cross of a wild ass and a jenny.","PeriodicalId":11579,"journal":{"name":"Emerita","volume":"85 1","pages":"117-140"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2017-05-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"41869833","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article assumes that in this text Seneca actively appropriates one Roman cultural device which plays a central role in memory building, the discourse of exemplarity. Taking into account that the topic of dying well is one of the backbones of the collection as a whole, we will examine Ep. 30, where the epistolary ego describes how an old friend faces death in an exemplary way. Considering that a deed proposed as exemplar requires not only a record, but also an agent that makes it visible (Roller 2004), we will try to show that in this letter the epistolary ego, aided by the written word, directs the reader’s attention to his own exemplarity, in order to build a positive and memorable portrait of himself.","PeriodicalId":11579,"journal":{"name":"Emerita","volume":"85 1","pages":"95-115"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2017-05-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46753338","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Besides this use as manner adverbs, μόγις and μόλις show also a use, although much less frequently, as approximative adverbs. This paper, which analyses The Illiad and The Odyssey , the complete tragedies by Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides, the plays by Aristophanes and Plutarch’s Lives, focuses on the determination of the semantic and pragmatic factors that have triggered the development of μόγις and μόλις into approximative adverbs. It aims also at describing the semantic, syntactic and pragmatic features of both adverbs in their use as approximative expressions. Finally, it will analyze the possible functional differences between both adverbs.","PeriodicalId":11579,"journal":{"name":"Emerita","volume":"85 1","pages":"1-25"},"PeriodicalIF":0.1,"publicationDate":"2017-05-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43650840","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":4,"RegionCategory":"历史学","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
