Successful teachers use strategies that regulate students' emotions and behaviors while also controlling their own emotions (stress, nervousness). To prepare teachers for the challenges of teaching, teacher training should include emotional and behavioral management strategies. Virtual Training Environments (VTEs) are effective at providing experiences and increasing learning in many domains. Creating VTEs for teachers can improve student learning and teacher retention. We introduce our current research aimed at integrating emotionally-intelligent virtual students within a 3D classroom training system. In our simulation, virtual students' emotional states will be determined from an appraisal process of actions taken by the teacher trainee in the virtual classroom. Virtual students will then display the appropriate non-verbal behaviors and react to the teacher accordingly. {"title":"Developmental Autonomous Learning: AI, Cognitive Sciences and Educational Technology","authors":"Pierre-Yves Oudeyer","doi":"10.1145/3308532.3337710","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1145/3308532.3337710","url":null,"abstract":"Current approaches to AI and machine learning are still fundamentally limited in comparison with autonomous learning capabilities of children. What is remarkable is not that some children become world champions in certain games or specialties: it is rather their autonomy, flexibility and efficiency at learning many everyday skills under strongly limited resources of time, computation and energy. And they do not need the intervention of an engineer for each new task (e.g. they do not need someone to provide a new task specific reward function). XX I will present a research program that has focused on computational modeling of child development and learning mechanisms in the last decade. I will discuss several developmental forces that guide exploration in large real world spaces, starting from the perspective of how algorithmic models can help us understand better how they work in humans, and in return how this opens new approaches to autonomous machine learning. XX In particular, I will discuss models of curiosity-driven autonomous learning, enabling machines to sample and explore their own goals and their own learning strategies, self-organizing a learning curriculum without any external reward or supervision. XX I will show how this has helped scientists understand better aspects of human development such as the emergence of developmental transitions between object manipulation, tool use and speech. I will also show how the use of real robotic platforms for evaluating these models has led to highly efficient unsupervised learning methods, enabling robots to discover and learn multiple skills in high-dimensions in a handful of hours. I will discuss how these techniques are now being integrated with modern deep learning methods. XX Finally, I will show how these models and techniques can be successfully applied in the domain of educational technologies, enabling to personalize sequences of exercises for human learners, while maximizing both learning efficiency and intrinsic motivation. We developed a taxonomy of 36 novel interaction formats as well as 37 roles the agent can take on in co-presentations. We evaluated the impact of these formats and roles by selecting 10 from the taxonomy and recording brief presentations on the same topic using the different formats. Since the success of such treatments is related to a patients emotion regulation capabilities, we employ a real-time social signal interpretation together with a computational simulation of emotion regulation that influences the agent's social behavior as well as the situational selection of verbal treatment strategies. This development led to an on-going resurgence of the research area of explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) which aims to reduce the opaqueness of those black-box-models. However, much of the current XAI-Research is focused on machine learning practitioners and engineers while omitting the specific needs of end-users. In this paper, we examine the impact of virtual agents within the field of XAI on the perceived trustworthiness of autonomous intelligent systems. To assess the practicality of this concept, we conducted a user study based on a simple speech recognition task. Virtual agents provide an opportuni-ty for students to practice their negotiation skills which leads to better outcomes. However, these negotiation training agents often lack the ability to understand the errors students make when negotiating, thus limiting their effectiveness as training tools. In this article, we argue that automated opponent-modeling techniques serve as effective methods for diagnos-ing important negotiation mistakes. To demonstrate this, we analyze a large number of participant traces generated while negotiating with a set of automated opponents. We show that negotiators' performance is closely tied to their understanding of an opponent's preferences. We further show that opponent modeling techniques can diagnose specific errors includ-ing: failure to elicit diagnostic information from an opponent, failure to utilize the information that was elicited, and failure to understand the transparency of an opponent. However, these assistants are not optimised to simulate key social aspects of human conversational environments. Humans are intellectually biased toward social activity when facing anthropomorphic agents or when presented with subtle social cues. In this paper, we test whether humans respond the same way to assistants in guided tasks, when in different forms of embodiment and social behaviour. In a within-subject study (N=30), we asked subjects to engage in dialogue with a smart speaker and a social robot. We observed shifting of interactive behaviour, as shown in behavioural and subjective measures. Our findings indicate that it is not always favourable for agents to be anthropomorphised or to communicate with nonverbal cues. In particular, we target those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ADS), veterans transitioning to civilian life, and former convicts integrating back into society. The system itself follows the SAIBA framework and contains several interviewer characters, who each represent a different type of vocational field, (e.g. service industry, retail, office, etc.) Each interviewer can be set to one of three conversational modes, which not only affects what they say and how they say it, but also their supporting body language. This approach offers varying difficulties, allowing users to start practicing with interviewers who are more encouraging and accommodating before moving on to personalities that are more direct and indifferent.
