The arc characteristics and the relationship between the critical flashover voltage of the insulators and ice amount, pollution severity and air pressure were determined. These time series are non-steady and non-periodic and the dimension of the strange attractor seems to be very high. We focus our study in the computation of the maximal Lyapunov exponents, which are a measure of the divergence of two trajectories in the attractor. We have studied the evolution of the maximal Lyapunov exponent as the instability parameter varies. In all the series we found a positive maximal Lyapunov exponent, which is a strong evidence of chaos.","PeriodicalId":112180,"journal":{"name":"2001 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. The pattern of noise and the insulator corona have been analyzed. A high frequency sensor with a filter is used to eliminate periodic noise, such as leakage current, harmonics and carriers. A pattern identification method of distinguishing the insulator corona pulse from the current pulse has been put forward, which is based on the pulse statistical characteristics. The field experimental results show that these methods are effective and useful.","PeriodicalId":112180,"journal":{"name":"2001 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. The device is designed as a dielectric plate (of 1 mm thickness) with periodic lattice (comb) structure of the potential electrode. This structure is evaporated onto one side of the plate with continuous grounded conductive surface overleaf. Under the applied AC HV, a self-restricted near-surface AC streamer corona discharge ignites around each strip of the lattice. In the present paper, phenomenology and various experimental characteristics of such a discharge are described, while a theory of the processes in the device is developed. Measured in experiments are single streamer current pulses, statistical distribution of the streamer current pulses, energy dissipation and average charge deposit by corona discharge into ambient air; measuring schemes with parameters are presented. The, experimental and theoretical results have been used for qualitative explanation of a recent drag reduction experiment (Shcherbakov et al, 2000) as well as for practical recommendations to some conventional applications (ozone generation, gas treatment etc).","PeriodicalId":112180,"journal":{"name":"2001 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. Remaining life must include margins for surviving the potential harsh environment effects of a design basis event (DBE) after up to 60 years of normal operation. Typically a DBE would be a postulated break in the largest high temperature pressurized line leading to elevated temperatures (accelerated aging conditions) in the surrounding environment. Previous research has shown that void content within polyolefin electric insulation grows during normal thermal aging and that oxygen diffusion plays a role in this growth. Under accelerated aging conditions, oxygen diffusion is limited reducing chemical reaction rates, and potentially affecting the aging process. This paper discusses preliminary experimental results indicative of accelerated aging for three commonly used polyolefin materials. Each sample was re-examined after thermal annealing for 17 hours at 120 C. Results indicate the void content increased dramatically from the pre-aged sample values.","PeriodicalId":112180,"journal":{"name":"2001 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. It is shown that the behavior of the additives can be singled out as well resorting to space charge measurements at high electrical field on films (either press-molded or cut from cables) or at low field on untreated cables. This proves that the considered additives are efficient in reducing space charge clustering in the presence of both injected charges at high field and charges deriving from cross-linking byproducts, and that the investigation carried out on films can provide results useful to evaluate cable behavior, thus saving testing efforts.","PeriodicalId":112180,"journal":{"name":"2001 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. In the case of slowly rising impulse voltages and AC stress it is enhanced by corona-stabilization. This phenomena caused by the ion drift during streamer development and the resulting space-charge is investigated. We present new experimental results about this phenomena. The paths of the breakdown channels across a point/plane gap have been recorded. The tip geometries of the protrusion, gas pressures and steepness of the applied test voltages have been varied during the experiments. Based on these results the fundamental idea of a new simulation model is presented. By electrostatic field calculations the time dependent growth of the streamer and the movement of the positive SF/sub 6/-ions have been calculated for the applied geometries. It is assumed that space-charge stabilization only occurs if the velocity of the streamer growth is lower than the drift velocity of the positive ions and the ions move in front of the streamer region and reduce the electric field within the streamer.","PeriodicalId":112180,"journal":{"name":"2001 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. In order to create an effective charge separation, a high electric field is required. The electromechanical effect can be further enhanced by corona charging in high-pressure atmospheres or in various dielectric gases that have high, electrical breakdown strengths. The effect of the gas inside the cellular structure has also been studied. A higher electric field most likely causes more complete charging throughout the cellular film. The electromechanical effect corresponding to the piezoelectric d/sub 33/ coefficient was enhanced after corona charging at 100-450 kPa or at 100-140 kPa in ambient nitrogen or in nitrous oxide, respectively, with corona voltages of up to 60 kV. The highest d/sub 33/ coefficient of about 790 pCN/sup -1/ was achieved after replacing air with nitrogen gas inside the cellular structure through consecutive low and high-pressure treatments at 293 or at 313 K.","PeriodicalId":112180,"journal":{"name":"2001 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat.
