Discrimination of PD and noise can be divided into two kinds of PD judgment. First, the judgment is executed automatically based on multiple logic gates: f-gate for frequency, n-gate for pulse count rate, q-gate for pulse magnitude, /spl phi/-gate for PD phase position, t-gate for continuous time, set logically in serial or in parallel. Second, the signals can be recognized by their pattern distributions: neural network recognition is based on the /spl phi/-q-n pattern; multiple frequency recognition is based on f-q-t pattern; and statistical source location pattern is based on x-q-t pattern. Satisfactory discrimination of high accuracy has been obtained through applying the measuring systems using the method in several PD measurements on-site.","PeriodicalId":112180,"journal":{"name":"2001 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. The direct application of electrodes is facilitated and the charge stability of the open-porous films is improved, if the porous PTFE films are coated with layers of other suitable polymers. Here, we report on the preparation of coated porous PTFE films and their investigation by means of scanning electron microscopy, corona charging and surface-potential measurements. For the coating, non-porous polymers like polystyrene (PS), polyethylene terephthalate (PETP) and Teflon/sup (R)/ AF were employed. After optimization, such layered films may be suitable for a range of electret-transducer applications under various environmental conditions.","PeriodicalId":112180,"journal":{"name":"2001 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. We focused, in particular, our attention to the inception points originated from microscopic defects like voids. In order to clarify the implication of these defects with the failure and breakdown of cables, we have developed a theoretical model based on the theory of electrical breakdown solving numerically its basic equations. Calculations of the ionization rates of atmospheric gas filling the voids have been done as a function of the applied electric stress and void dimensions. Estimates of the energy release and local damages produced by hot electrons are given. A model of growth of damage is also proposed.","PeriodicalId":112180,"journal":{"name":"2001 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. Therefore, the corona discharge current-voltage characteristic is very important and depends on several factors: discharge electrode shape, dimensions and surface condition, gas flow properties, dust particle loading and space charge, polarity of applied voltage, etc. We present a model for the prediction of the current-voltage characteristic and experimentally validate it for round, threaded, rectangular and rigid discharge electrodes in combination with plate type collecting electrodes. The experimental validation shows good agreement for the case of the round discharge electrode. The model predicts the effect of wire diameter, plate length and gas flow temperature. For the rigid discharge electrode, of the same electrode thickness as the diameter of the round electrode, much lower corona onset voltage was observed.","PeriodicalId":112180,"journal":{"name":"2001 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. The impulse breakdown strength in the high temperature region (90/spl deg/C) was improved by blending. In the present paper, the space charge behavior and electrical conduction of the blends were studied with the electrode system of aluminium/sample/semiconductive layer. The specimen with 90 wt.% LDPE and 10 wt.% polypropylene copolymer (B10) had a larger amount of space charge than pure LDPE (PE) at 30/spl deg/C. On the other hand, the DC current of B10 was less than that of PE in this temperature region. It was found that the anode field was related to the current in both PE and B10, which suggests that the carrier injection from the anode is dominant to the electrical conduction. The DC currents of both PE and B10 showed good straight lines on the Schottky plot with the same Schottky coefficients.","PeriodicalId":112180,"journal":{"name":"2001 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. Experiments were conducted using XLPE specimens crosslinked at various temperatures with added phenolic, sulfur-type and amine-type antioxidants. Specimens were characterized by measuring the gel fraction and the content of crosslinking byproducts, acetophenone, cumyl alcohol and /spl alpha/-methyl styrene. It was found that sulfur-type antioxidant has the strongest influence on the decomposition of cumyl alcohol, whereas the amine-type had only a minor influence. Taking the data regarding the crosslinking temperature dependence of the crosslinking byproduct content into consideration, the mechanism of antioxidant action in the crosslinking reaction is examined.","PeriodicalId":112180,"journal":{"name":"2001 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. Such effects introduce a polarization capacity, C/sub p/, associated with the interface between the electrode and the material under test. This polarization capacity follows a fractional power law dependence on frequency, such that C/sub p/ /spl prop/ /spl omega//sup -/spl alpha//, where /spl omega/ is the frequency and /spl alpha/ is a function of frequency with values below 1/2. The possibility that such a power law dependence may be attributed to coupling between the applied electric field and the free charge in the Debye layer is examined.","PeriodicalId":112180,"journal":{"name":"2001 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. In this paper, some generator model bars were made and some typical PD phenomena in generator stator windings were simulated. PD tests were tried to find the features of composite PD. The data obtaind from the test were analyzed using statistical parameters and the spectrum of different types of PD were plotted to reveal the difference of different patterns of PD. A BP neural network was also used to recognize the PD patterns using some new input parameters.","PeriodicalId":112180,"journal":{"name":"2001 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat. Negative charges were detected in the vicinity of the positive electrode of specimens cross-linked at temperatures exceeding 180/spl deg/C. After the crosslinking byproducts were removed, the heterocharge disappeared and remained undetected even after the specimens were soaked in acetophenone. Charge profiles were also obtained for XLPE specimens containing an antistatic agent, which has the function of absorbing moisture. The heterocharge was detected clearly in these specimens, and although the heterocharge disappeared after the decomposition products were removed, the heterocharge was detected again when the specimen was soaked in acetophenone. It is concluded that the small amount of moisture in XLPE is responsible for heterocharge creation.","PeriodicalId":112180,"journal":{"name":"2001 Annual Report Conference on Electrical Insulation and Dielectric Phenomena (Cat.
