The main sources of complexity are: the wide range of technologies, applications and services; and the management components attached to them, as identified in the modern architectures for computing and communications. Outsourcing of management tasks, i.e. the delegation of management tasks from a customer organization to a provider organization, the outsourcer, which carries out the operational management on behalf of the customer, is considered a form of customer assistance by which solutions are made available to the customer without implying high management overheads.","PeriodicalId":110797,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of NOMS '96 - IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131933457","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although the field of distributed system-level fault diagnosis has been flourishing for years, and a large number of mostly theoretical results have been devised, these results are not yet widely applied to network management systems. This paper presents the application of distributed diagnosis results to practical SNMP-based fault management. We implemented a modified version of the adaptive distributed system-level diagnosis algorithm using SNMP facilities. Two important modifications were introduced in the algorithm.: (1) to permit management of a variety of agents our implementation includes tested-only nodes, in addition to those that both test and are tested; (2) recognizing the need for a network management station (NMS) that doesn't tolerate large diagnosis delays, SNMP traps are used; the result is a diagnosis scheme that has high resilience to network faults and at the same time avoids inconvenient delays. The impact of the diagnosis on the performance of the network is analyzed in terms of the overhead imposed by SNMP diagnosis messages. The influence of both the number of nodes and the testing interval on the demand of bandwidth by the diagnosis process were evaluated, and it is shown that for common LAN capacities, diagnosis consumes less than 1% of the available bandwidth.","PeriodicalId":110797,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of NOMS '96 - IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114964293","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The advanced intelligent network (AIN) has been matured in the United States to provide services to customers at their demands. Therefore, customers can create services of their choices. This type of customer service creation environment has been very popular; however, it leads to problems in the network management, e.g., configuration, accounting, and security management. As the ATM technology becomes mature, the ATM network management system must exist to provide a high quality of service (QoS) to B-ISDN subscribers. The management of B-ISDN has been difficult due to the ATM characteristics. We propose an integrated network management system for the AIN and B-ISDN. The management system provides the integrated operations system. We show how the telecommunications management network (TMN) can collaborate to provide integrated network management. We describe the logical architecture of an integrated management system. The architecture is discussed from the standpoint of the flow of diagnostic information and the role of equipment and personnel.","PeriodicalId":110797,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of NOMS '96 - IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129540906","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The fine-grade OAM measurement, with the overhead of voluminous measurement information, leads to pin-pointed identification when problems occur; while with coarse-grade OAM measurement, without detailed information, one needs to correlate many alarms which may be triggered by a single problem. Alarm correlation, however, requires some heuristics for problem diagnosis and has some degree of uncertainty. Taking VP (virtual path) congestion diagnosis as our target example, we present the path intersection heuristics as the alarm correlation method used to analyze the congestion alarms and locate the congestion areas. Our simulation results show that the intersection heuristics with output link consideration locates the congestion nodes precisely. We also analyze the congestion pattern and find that the congestion area has the tendency of expanding from one node to its neighbors. After identifying the congested nodes, we apply three methods to choose the congested VPCs for rerouting. The results show that the method of less summed capacity performs the best in terms of the average rerouted capacity.","PeriodicalId":110797,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of NOMS '96 - IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133477637","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With this in mind, we have developed a distributed user-interface called 'Distributed DUALQUEST.' With Distributed DUALQUEST, management work can be divided among operators, both by geographic area of responsibility and by task type (i.e. network operation management, end-user support, etc.). Close coordination among operators is required since work performed by any operator will likely be strongly interrelated with that performed by others (e.g. an end-user support operator might process a new subscription application, while a network operation management operator might arrange for the installation of equipment for that new subscriber). For this reason, Distributed DUALQUEST provides a data-flow control function for circulating data among operators. Distributed DUALQUEST also provides a function by which operators are able to share a common window. This can be especially important when they must cope with network failures that extend across individual area lines. Additionally, Distributed DUALQUEST also provides a function for supervising the work of operators. Supervisors can monitor work being performed; when necessary, they can adjust the balance of work loads by changing the lines of division, and they can help out individual operators by working together with them on a shared window. Finally, it is often important for operators to have a clear picture of the geographical location of an individual subscriber, and Distributed DUALQUEST satisfies this requirement by providing bifocal windows, in which individual sections of the network can be magnified while others are compressed. Magnified sections can display individual-house level geographical information.","PeriodicalId":110797,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of NOMS '96 - IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"47 2-4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132535039","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In parallel Telstra runs a narrowband copper pair network. Paper studies have indicated that operations improvements can be made by enhancing the broadcast network to carry narrowband interactive services and telephony, which gives the option of retiring the copper pair network. At the same time, operations support systems and work practices can be updated to make good use of network intelligence and improve processes. ITU-T X.700 series standards (also known as OSI network and systems management standards) are developed to manage networks and network elements in TMN environment. Many efforts have been made to define managed objects and develop management platforms for telecommunication network management. However, less effort has been made for telecommunication service management. The OSI based network management are not particularly suitable for service management. New technologies are required. CORBA technology, on the other hand, provides a distributed object computing environment. It provides a basic framework for distributed object management and is capable of supporting global multi-vendor networks. Its distributed nature, object orientation, and the capability of handling complicated objects make it a candidate technology for telecommunication service management. It is important that these two technologies can work together to provide an integrated telecommunication service and network management environment. This paper discusses different strategies of interfacing CORBA and the OSI based TMN environment.","PeriodicalId":110797,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of NOMS '96 - IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131697270","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
