The situation is certainly not adequate to the increasing demands and the versatility of the broadband applications. The ATM virtual path service can be regarded as one step towards co-operative, automatic management of the international ATM broadband public network operator (PNO) networks. The article presents the study results obtained in the Eurescom P408 project on the TMN Xuser management interface for the monitoring and control of the Pan-European ATM virtual path service. The X reference point is located, as defined in the ITU-T recommendation M.3010, between operations system functions in different TMNs. The Xuser is defined as the interface between the private network management system and the public network management system, and is situated at the service management responsibility level of the TMN logical architecture hierarchy. The Xuser interface which is described, defines the set of messages exchanged across the interface to provide virtual path services to the ATM virtual path service users. To provide and control the public virtual path connections which cross several public network domains and connect two network access points towards the private network domains, the Xuser interfaces cooperate with the Xcoop interfaces, the latter being defined between public international network management systems and situated at the network management responsibility level of the TMN layered logical architecture.","PeriodicalId":110797,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of NOMS '96 - IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127397362","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We have developed a support environment allowing such negotiation for a target service of network management of an ATM virtual path network. Network resource information of each network is protected against other network operators' tampering by classifying it according to the level of access permission. User friendly graphical objects in this environment facilitate the use of underlying management functions to manipulate the networks. A videoconferencing system is attached to the environment to help interaction among the operators. With all these features, this environment enables network providers to cooperate with each other to set up VP trails in quick response to customer's demands.","PeriodicalId":110797,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of NOMS '96 - IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126120495","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The object oriented paradigm has been widely accepted as the means for structuring management communications. Moreover network management platforms operating on top of general purpose hardware and software computer systems are already available on the market, thus responding to requirements, such as modularity and flexibility, that are part of the objectives of the TINA architecture. The paper describes the results of the experience of implementing a management application, specifically a connection management application, structured according to object-oriented paradigms and running on multiple interoperable distributed processing environments. Traditionally connection management has been always considered as control operations which are viewed as being different from management. In case of TINA connection management we deal with real-time and dynamic management operations. After a brief introduction on the chosen application scenario and the consequent generic requirements on the connection management system, an implementation case is described especially focusing on software platform aspects and applications interoperability.","PeriodicalId":110797,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of NOMS '96 - IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127788266","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It contains about a hundred GDMO object classes, which were specially designed to achieve the operation system function. New technologies introduced to ensure effective and rapid system implementation include a directory system, to solve the problem of object instance location, and the use of GDMO object classes to design all system functions. In addition, an original common software platform is used to support the GDMO object intercommunication function. This operation system achieves a distributed object processing environment that supports CMIS/P interfaces. The system has been deployed in Japan and is now being used in multimedia experiments, the initial results of which are encouraging.","PeriodicalId":110797,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of NOMS '96 - IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122346877","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In addition, customers expect greater management control over the configuration and operation of such services. While first implementations of public ATM networks (such as the Pan-European ATM pilot) are already in the market place these tend to confine their service offerings to basic semi-permanent virtual path services. Satisfaction of customer service expectations requires that such networks provide customers with more dynamic control (via signalling) over the creation and deletion of customer connections. In addition, customer expectations in relation to bandwidth availability and quality of service control requires that such networks support more dynamic \"on-demand\" virtual path (VP) and virtual circuit (VC) connections. The successful operation of such networks requires automated management systems reflecting the operator processes involved. This paper presents the main management results of the work carried out by the Eurescom project into the specification of the management requirements to support the operation of a first Pan-European VC-based switched ATM network. The paper describes the functional architecture defined to support the specification work, the main results of the specification work and the open management issues identified by the task.","PeriodicalId":110797,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of NOMS '96 - IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116774054","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One key component for implementing TMN inter-PNO (public network operator) management is the definition of X interfaces. These interfaces must provide management services between PNOs, taking into account specific constraints of inter-working between different administrative domains (security requirements, inter-operability of heterogeneous platforms, competition between PNOs). The Pan-European IN-based Freephone service has been felt as a top priority service, and an ad-hoc project has been launched by EURESCOM to specify the X interface for managing this service. This interface is meant to be tested on a distributed TMN laboratory. BT, France Telecom (leader), PTT Netherlands, CSELT, Portugal Telecom, Telia, and Telecom Finland were involved in this interface specification activity that was carried out as EURESCOM project P406. This paper presents the results achieved, and focuses on the methodology used to obtain them.","PeriodicalId":110797,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of NOMS '96 - IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124352844","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
