This paper describes the LAN fault management ensemble which has been developed by the Ensemble Team of INTAP NM (Network Management) Technical Committee. Ensembles represent specific solutions to particular problems of the networks as a collection of managed resources, functions and scenarios. This ensemble provides a method of managing an enterprise-level private network in particular fault management areas. OSI management is adopted as a platform to manage LANs which are assumed to be managed by SNMP or OSI layer management protocols. This ensemble takes a state-oriented approach which is better suited, and provides more efficient integrated network management for large-scale enterprise networks containing many resources to be managed, because SNMP management is performed by polling based on the stateless approach. In addition, this ensemble adopts international standards or publicly available specifications regarding the necessary management information. Integrated management is executed by the OSI manager and proxy agents. Proxy agents act as OSI agents and convert information gathered by SNMP manager/agents or OSI layer management entities to OSI. Various network resources such as FDDI, Ethernet and MIB-II are defined on the basis of definition of the ISO/IEC, IEEE and NM Forum standards and additional necessary resources are uniquely defined for this ensemble requirements.","PeriodicalId":110797,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of NOMS '96 - IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124421384","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Among those phrases that characterize future networks are high speed, service diversity, and integrated environment. As the information transport capabilities increase, it has become possible to provide various kinds of services which were considered almost impossible with existing lower speed transport networks. Also, the use of ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) has paved way to supporting multiple types of communication services using a single type of information transport/switching mechanism. This article addresses the issue of network evolution toward an integrated networking system. It first identifies the architecture of the target integrated networking system and its basic characteristics. Then, the architecture and functional characteristics of the initial stage networking system and evolution direction toward target integrated networking system are described. It describes ATM Highway network which is being developed by Korea Telecom (KT). The initial phase of the ATM Highway architecture is based on the first phase of the evolution step and is designed to make further refinement and extension easy to incorporate in the next steps of the evolution path to an integrated networking architecture.","PeriodicalId":110797,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of NOMS '96 - IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"11 4","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114103032","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

OSI management applications are structured according to a manager-agent scheme. Agents are software programs associated to network elements with the purpose to turn manager requests into commands issued to the real resources; similarly, agents forward events originated within the real resources to their manager as notifications. The interface between managers and agents is object oriented, specified according to the GDMO standard language. For each management domain a proper information model (e.g. the class hierarchy relevant for the application) is defined. Information between manager and agent is exchanged in the form of operations over objects, as defined by the CMIP application level protocol. MOMIX is a toolkit that allows for the implementation of thorough agent emulators, out of the specification of the information model, written in GDMO/ASN.1. By thorough emulation we distinguish the MOMIX approach from the other toolkits: MOMIX emulators are actually full agent prototypes plus partial real resource simulators. MOMIX provides a highly sophisticated environment based on solid foundations inherited from Intellicorp KAPPA object oriented development environment. MOMIX addresses the task of fast prototyping management applications.","PeriodicalId":110797,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of NOMS '96 - IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115776668","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This diversity and in particular the huge differences in complexity and cost of network elements (e.g. digital switches compared with regenerators) complicates the specification and standardization of security in TMN. However, equipment cost is not itself very useful and appropriate security measures should be based on other factors such as potential loss of revenue. The need for security of TMN is evident even from a generic evaluation of different information assets together with the specification of top-level security objectives. Existing TMN recommendation only allow for a modest level of security. In a number of known management systems and network elements only seldom changed passwords are used. Such password are often transmitted in the clear thus providing only a very limited degree of security. Additional security measures requires that existing TMN protocols are modified to allow for exchange of security information and communication of protected transfer syntax. In addition, management of security in TMN is essential. GULS (generic upper layer security) is a promising candidate facilitating such security exchanges and security transformations. However, the details of which security techniques (e.g. type of authentication) is not specified by GULS and must be provided by additional standards. Even so, GULS (or similar mechanisms) allow for the introduction of a security infrastructure within the TMN which enables different security techniques to be applied when standardised or as needed.","PeriodicalId":110797,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of NOMS '96 - IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132148098","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As workflow management systems become more complex and critical to an organisation's performance, there is an opportunity for a new generation of workflow management products to be developed that would greatly increase the scope of target application areas. The key areas of extensions to workflow management systems include the use of transactional semantics to increase reliability. Traditional transaction processing technology cannot be used directly for workflow management since applications in workflow management are different from the data oriented applications, such as funds transfer in banking applications. Customised workflow definition and management capability is required to capture business requirements and rules. This paper discusses the requirements and characteristics of transactional workflow management, examines applications of transactional workflow for telecommunication service management, and addresses architectural issues of transactional workflow and its role in the telecommunication service management platform.","PeriodicalId":110797,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of NOMS '96 - IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131902930","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With this measure it is also possible to estimate for example, the lines of code in the implemented product and the cost and time effort needed to make the product. It is also possible to discover which parts of the model that are most complex and thereby know which part that will need the most time to implement. The IM Meter is able to measure the significant properties of various information models such as complexity and information content. The measures the IM Meter deals with are of various sorts. Some of them measure the features of minor details of the information models while other measure more general and extending properties. The present paper considers telecommunications management network (TMN) interface complexity in particular.","PeriodicalId":110797,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of NOMS '96 - IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125084346","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
