From this point of view requirements, functions and architecture of OSI management simulation software is discussed. The systems described simulate managers and agents in order to verify the management functionality of network elements and operations systems. A number of areas of use have been discovered, in addition to the highly automated testing of Q3 interfaces. Finally, possibilities for future applications are discussed.","PeriodicalId":110797,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of NOMS '96 - IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122625631","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One service already available today is that of a virtual private network that provide dispersed corporate sites with wide area data and telephony capabilities using public network services. The introduction of B-ISDN allows for the provision of VPN services in a much more integrated fashion is the current practice. However in the short to medium term any effective VPN service must be able to deal with the technological and organisational heterogeneities that are present when providing a high level of service functionality over an arbitrary number of administrative domains. This paper presents the design of a management service for a VPN that addresses some of these multi-domain and network heterogeneity issues. It outlines how a design based on the ITU-T's TMN recommendations was developed and how working prototypes were developed over a series of demonstration testbeds based on real broadband networks.","PeriodicalId":110797,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of NOMS '96 - IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"245 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131726629","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is not easy, however, to identify what restoration policy would be best in the event of disaster. We must evaluate the effectiveness of various supposed policies before a disaster strikes us. For this purpose, we have already reported a software simulator for evaluating the effectiveness of restoration policies, and have presented some simulation results. However, the results are few and simple. For practical use, we must study more results obtained by well organized and systematically planned simulations. This article reports further simulation results for use in identifying the best policy for attaining fast restoration of telecommunication services after a disaster.","PeriodicalId":110797,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of NOMS '96 - IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127225984","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although network management that covers end-to-end communication over the whole integrated network is needed, it is difficult to manage the configuration, know the status of communication connection, and handle the provisioning at the total network level. Moreover, it is not easy to isolate faults and monitor performance among the heterogeneous networks. We propose a cooperative end-to-end management method that makes good use of CNM (customer network management) services of ATM-WAN, and combines them with ATM-LAN management services. Our proposal includes: (1) end-to-end management based on the network partitioning concept, (2) ATM-WAN abstraction and modeling from the viewpoint of ATM-LAN customers at the network level, and (3) a couple of new managed objects for CNM services.","PeriodicalId":110797,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of NOMS '96 - IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126052292","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, as the network size grows and new network and computing technology emerges, consistency, flexibility, reliability, and scalability issues of distributed network management systems might not be fully addressed within the model. This paper proposes an extension to the manager/agent model, called the manager/agency paradigm, to address these issues. In the manager/agency paradigm, a manager performs management functions through an agency of cooperating management entities, (lower-level) managers and/of agents, which are collaboratively working together to achieve consistent management goals. Agencies may recursively constitute other agencies, based on the layering and partitioning principles, to scale with ever growing network size. They may be organized flexibly according to different management functionalities, goals and policies, and may present a single management view to their (upper-level) managers by hiding management complexity. Inside an agency, various fault tolerant schemes, such as active replication or primary-backup approach, may be used to implement reliable management functionality transparently to its manager. The paper begins by describing the anatomy and semantics of an agency and comparing the manager/agency model against the manager/agent model. It then demonstrates its applications to address the consistency and reliability issues of network management problems. Finally, applications of the manager/agency model to the broader, distributed enterprise management is discussed.","PeriodicalId":110797,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of NOMS '96 - IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"2014 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125996597","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
