This system allows developers to define the specification of NMS applications by using a menu-driven editor and then generates C++ source code. The core of the system is SOFTEX/S, a software synthesis tool that is based on a term-rewriting theory. This paper reports a method to develop NMS application software effectively using our software synthesis approach.","PeriodicalId":110797,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of NOMS '96 - IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116226503","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

SNMP V1 has been widely accepted and deployed in the network management area. Community based SNMP V2 and continuing work in the SNMP area bring the potential to extend that deployment into all areas of distributed systems management. This article looks at the new features of SNMP V2, examines the implications of those features through an example application and points to SNMP V2's future in scaleable distributed systems management. SNMP V2 builds on SNMP V1 by providing full coexistence with V1 while adding new features including: structure of management information (SMI) enhancements that are mainly focused on improvements to the managed object definition; and protocol enhancements that include a new trap format, exceptions and error codes and a provision for bulk data transfer.","PeriodicalId":110797,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of NOMS '96 - IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126976606","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Controlled resources cover both system resources and user application services. All resources have been modelled through GDMO specifications. GDMO specifications of system resources have been built considering preliminary output work from the OSF management SIG (Unapproved draft, 1993) and the DSIS requirements specification. Manager and agent applications have been built on a common, generalized platform, the core management services platform (CMS), providing access to general management functionalities through a common event-based application program interface (API). Agent or manager applications developed on top of the CMS just need to cope with message dispatching, data transformation and non-standard management issues. CMS automatically manages some ISO/OSI standard managed object classes (MOCs) defined in ISO/IEC IS 10164 family standards, and provides the user with facilities to design and handle user defined MOCs with ease. CMS encapsulates communication and addressing issues, presenting the concept of a management session between management applications, allowing addressing through application entity title \"aliases\", and handling abstract syntax in such a way as to simplify development of (object-oriented) management applications.","PeriodicalId":110797,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of NOMS '96 - IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116493224","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The SIS approach is based on the gradual integration of the existing management systems-which are often proprietary-to a reference integrating platform, while concurrently pursuing the conformance of the platform to the ITU-T network management standard, that is, TMN. The paper presents, besides the platform itself, the methodology adopted in the design of the whole system. It includes the statement of the original problem, requirements, functionalities, and restrictions. The functional, hardware, software and data architectures are also presented, as well as the data distribution schemes and the man-machine interface. The problems found and the solutions adopted throughout the development and deployment phases are also summarized. The platform has been developed in Brazil by the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG) jointly and funded by the Minas Gerais State Telecommunications Company (TELEMIG). Today the system is totally deployed, distributed over a large area, collecting data from thousands of points and executing actions upon hundreds of devices.","PeriodicalId":110797,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of NOMS '96 - IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129850720","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In almost all current network management systems, a relational database or an object oriented database has been utilized for implementing the management information base (MIB). By using such conventional databases, network management systems can benefit from efficient query processing and reliable transaction processing. However, these features are not sufficient for managing evolving telecommunication networks and services. In order to deal with this problem and to sustain the timely user response and the quality of network services under any circumstances, it is important for the conventional MIB to add real-time capabilities that take into account the priority of each management operation. A real-time database system (RTDBS) is a database system that has real-time capabilities. The main objective of the RTDBS is to complete transactions before their deadlines expire. In order to study a new MIB implementation, we have evaluated the effectiveness of the RTDBS. The RTDBS contains a variety of modules, such as transaction scheduling, concurrency control, and buffer management. Among these, we focus on transaction scheduling by using a memory based RTDBS. In our evaluation, we consider an ATM transmission network that consists of 7 network elements, and 28 physical links.","PeriodicalId":110797,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of NOMS '96 - IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131937336","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It concentrates on the IOP tests (interoperability tests), which lay the basis for future work. After a short description of the environment, the special challenges of such an international effort in TMN (telecommunication management network) experimentation are explained. The results give some hints on the current status of the CMIP (common management information protocol) based software products in the market. This paper reflects the joint effort of all PET-Lab staff at the different public network operators. The project tried to use existing results from specifications and research projects of EURESCOM and other research bodies.","PeriodicalId":110797,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of NOMS '96 - IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134510753","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We look at the important network management process of provisioning, which involves all activities to implement changes to the network. Typical provisioning activities include addition or deletion of customers and network elements, growth of the network, and load balancing. We present a new method for specifying and analyzing provisioning workflow. Our method is based on representing workflow by finite state machines augmented with the notion of attribute sets. Such a representation allows us to study important properties of the workflow, and analyze it to detect inefficiencies. We also provide an example of the application of this technique to a trunk provisioning workflow.","PeriodicalId":110797,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of NOMS '96 - IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"128 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127090490","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, it is necessary to develop applications efficiently. One of methods which develop applications efficiently is that the management system provides common functions to each application as a management service. We propose one method that develops the above management service. We define the management service as a function object. The management system executes the management service based on the management service specifications defined in the GDMO (Guidelines for the Definition of Managed Object) templates.","PeriodicalId":110797,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of NOMS '96 - IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126024321","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It supports the dialogue with the customer, by collecting information about faults, and performs a knowledge-based diagnostic process, providing a fast and effective guide to the sequence of operations needed to correctly locate the ISDN trouble (by suggesting network element tests, interpreting data/measures, achieving trouble diagnosis and recommending recovery actions). It also integrates some guides on particular tele-diagnosis commands, on the configuration/diagnostic procedures of the most common clients' terminals and on problems at the customer's premises. An ISDN guide to access technical and commercial information about Telecom Italia ISDN service is also provided within the MIDA environment. Auxiliary features are also included, concerning the possibility to suspend/resume diagnostic sessions, a context-sensitive help for novice users, on-line notebooks, etc.","PeriodicalId":110797,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of NOMS '96 - IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"292 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134329910","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The results presented were achieved in the Eurescom project P408 called the \"Pan-European TMN experiments and Field Trial Support\". A number of European network operators participated in the TMN specification tasks. Before describing the Xcoop interface specifications we present the context and the objectives of the task in the project, as well as the methodology used: the ensemble concept from the Network Management Forum (NMF). We then give a separate overview of the SDH and ATM specifications. In the SDH case, the specification set is composed of an information model, an ensemble for path provisioning and another ensemble for fault management. The information model contains object classes from X.721 and object classes inherited from the interim ETSI standard 300 653 (NA4/GOM). In the ATM case, the specification set is composed of an information model and an ensemble for fault management. The information model contains object classes from X.721 and object classes from the ATM pilot issue 1.2++ configuration information model. We focus on an assessment of the methodology carried out in terms of both usability (for specifiers) and applicability (for implementors). We also outline the subsequent activities inside this project and inside other Eurescom projects.","PeriodicalId":110797,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of NOMS '96 - IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114268481","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
