This quality of service, defined as delay, loss, and throughput requirements, is presented based on measurements from customer networks. New traffic requirements resulting from evolution of transport products to higher payload capacities are also identified, along with performance road blocks which limit the evolution of distributed network management. Technologies and protocols which will alleviate these limitations are discussed along with a new resource allocation scheme to meet the diverse set of traffic conditions and quality of service requirements. Network interoperability in the context of global networks and from a performance perspective is then explored. Some form of common traffic descriptors seem to be necessary going beyond the current standardization of physical layer SONET/SDH overhead channels.","PeriodicalId":110797,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of NOMS '96 - IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"113 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124701731","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed architecture is a top-down approach, and consists of four levels of basic architecture, namely, service/functional architecture, system architecture, network architecture and software architecture. By the proposed architecture, TMN compliant layered management functions are realized for the broadband access system at EML (element management layer), NML (network management layer) and SML (service management layer). By considering multi-vendor environments, the proposed management systems communicate each other via OSI protocols. Three different configurations are evaluated for EML agents, and the distributed or hybrid EML agent approaches are cost effective solutions based on current technologies. Finally, this paper shows a prototype system based on the proposed architecture.","PeriodicalId":110797,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of NOMS '96 - IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"216 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115003318","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The sequence of alarms contains valuable knowledge about the behavior of the network, but much of the knowledge is fragmented and hidden in the vast amount of data. Regularities in the alarms can be used in fault management applications, e.g., for filtering redundant alarms, locating problems in the network, and possibly in predicting severe faults. In this paper we describe TASA (Telecommunication Alarm Sequence Analyzer), a novel system for discovering interesting regularities in the alarms. In the core of the system are algorithms for locating frequent alarm episodes from the alarm stream and presenting them as rules. Discovered rules can then be explored with flexible information retrieval tools that support iteration. The user interface is hypertext, based on HTML, and can be used with a standard WWW browser. TASA is in experimental use and has already discovered rules that have been integrated into the alarm handling software of an operator.","PeriodicalId":110797,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of NOMS '96 - IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"88 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130940799","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The criteria have been obtained by applying three selected MIMs, namely the NMF network model, the ITU-T M.3100 model and the ETSI GOM model, to a simple example SDH network. This process has highlighted similarities and differences between those MIMs which have been then summarized as comparison criteria. Those criteria can be used for assessing the difficulty of integrating management systems implementing different MIMs and hence having MIBs of different structure, for designing new MIMs and upgrading existing ones, and for choosing the most appropriate MIM for a given network and a given modeling case.","PeriodicalId":110797,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of NOMS '96 - IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123173027","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

High speed networking protocols such as asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) networks exacerbate this problem as they generate large amounts of data and require more sophisticated traffic control policies than traditional circuit-switched networks. Recognition of the need to retain the benefits of centralised management has led researchers to identify categories of telecommunications management functions which are suited to distribution. This paper describes the hybrid system which applies distributed artificial intelligence (DAI) intelligent agent concepts and technologies to unify the benefits of centralised and distributed management. DAI promotes the use of behavioural rather than functional control. We argue that this is an important abstraction tool for constructing, maintaining and understanding large and complex systems. In particular, in order to improve network management scalability, we propose a hierarchical system of independent controllers (agents) with local problem-solving and decision-making capabilities. Each agent acts much like existing centralised management systems, but collectively they communicate to maintain system-wide objectives and to resolve conflicts of interest between themselves. The hybrid architecture has wide application potential for distributed management and control tasks, particularly interdomain network management, service management and manager of managers (MOM).","PeriodicalId":110797,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of NOMS '96 - IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123673955","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
