As a result, carriers are preparing a wider variety of communication services for the coming multimedia/B-ISDN era than have been previously possible. Similarly, due to advances in telecommunication terminal equipment technology, multiple customers will be able to simultaneously access communication services such as video-conference or electronic mail. It is important to provide customers with a user-friendly multimedia service environment that can customize and employ communication services in a flexible and dynamic manner. In order to achieve such an environment we propose a concept called \"intelligent dynamic service provisioning (IDSP),\" a new way to provide services in the coming multimedia/B-ISDN era. Then we describe service views of customers and carriers for multimedia services, and the interfaces required to propagate information which is necessary for providing services. Based on these views, we propose an architecture for the IDSP system.","PeriodicalId":110797,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of NOMS '96 - IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116052743","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our operations system has a load-share/function-share structure, and is composed of a large number of application servers and communication servers using commercially available workstations interconnected through a duplicated high-speed LAN for high reliability, availability, serviceability, and expandable. Because of the large scale of the supervised networks, one feature of our operations system (OpS) is the use of a discriminator managed object (MO) for each association implemented in the network element (NE) so as to reduce the number of less important event-reports from one NE. However, the OpS has several manager applications (AP), and if they establish associations to the same NE one by one, it overloads the discriminating process. Thus, we devised a scheme for the sharing of an association by several manager APs. This scheme raises three issues: assigning invoke IDs, delivering notifications, and managing associations. The first issue is the system for composing invoke IDs that makes it possible to assign IDs that are unique system-wide. The second issue is a filtering system that can deliver an event-report from an NE to correct manager AP. The third issue is the management of associations; we propose that the state of association to be expressed by standard state attributes. Moreover, to unify the interface with the NE, we propose that the association interface be an MO.","PeriodicalId":110797,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of NOMS '96 - IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"78 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123127580","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Open network management protocols and platforms are becoming an increasingly important \"equipment evaluation\" criteria. In particular, the role of the simple network management protocol (SNMP) is expanding rapidly. This raises important concerns regarding the extent to which SNMP may be used to manage telecommunications equipment in carrier networks. This paper describes an information model for an SNMP enterprise MIB (management information base) designed to support complete and comprehensive management of sophisticated communications equipment in large carrier networks. This use of SNMP presents a number of challenges, including: realizing a conceptual model of the switch in terms of MIB tables; implementing a \"verb and response\" capability; supporting full remote configuration; providing detailed real-time alarm information; ensuring scalability of surveillance capabilities; allowing management of equipment supporting different software versions. This paper describes aspects of an enterprise MIB that fully addresses these challenges. The MIB is described in terms of both its structure and provided management capabilities.","PeriodicalId":110797,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of NOMS '96 - IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123661157","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We propose a \"self-sizing network operation\". This is a traffic engineering, management and operation concept for ATM networks. This concept allows networks to be rapidly operated and flexibly re-dimensioned by the system. We overview the functions of this system. Next, we present the virtual path (VP) bandwidth control function and the network element (NE) interface, which are Step 1 functions in the \"self-sizing network operation\". Their functions can automatically adjust the VP bandwidth. We show their effectiveness; the VP bandwidth can be reduced by 30% or 40%. To implement the operation system, we considered the actual operation time. This may be restricted for operation control. Then, we evaluated the performance of the Step 1 function. In this evaluation, we measured the basic CMIP performance, and estimated the time necessary for actual operation based on these measurements. A major portion of the total operation time is the time necessary for collecting data. This increases by the cube of the total number of virtual channel handlers (VCHs) with every additional VCH. If we use this system, we must consider its operation cycle and effectiveness. However, fortunately the time necessary for operation is short enough to operate about 50 VCHs in a network which cover all of Japan.","PeriodicalId":110797,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of NOMS '96 - IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115298186","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

End-users need a service broker function, called service navigation, to find services and to access them. The service navigation function requires a service menu scenario with flexible content selection strategies for various user needs and a mechanism to update content and menu information easily and timely. This paper proposes a content information management model satisfying the above requirements. In most menu-based navigation system, navigation information is only used to control menu behaviors. Therefore its scheme is optimized for each menu. This approach is not suitable for prescribed requirements. In this model, content information is divided into navigation parameters, menu object and navigation scenario. Navigation parameters are content and service information. Its scheme is independent of menu structure. A menu object is composed of some elements of navigation parameters and media data. A scenario is a menu behavior and represents content selection strategies. Our approach allows an end-user to chose several strategies for selecting a content from a menu, and a menu designer to reuse the consistent navigation information and reconfiguring mechanism of menu objects.","PeriodicalId":110797,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of NOMS '96 - IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116044175","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The case study used a use case approach to fill the \"gap\" between functional-based TMN service requirements specification, object-oriented analysis and design methodologies, and the emerging (object-oriented) implementation techniques and platforms. This paper presents the proposed use case approach (originally taken from Objectory) and reports our experiences from applying an object-oriented method (OMT, object modelling technique) to TMN application development.
