{"title":"Comparison of Scientometric Indicators Used by Web of Science and Google Scholar","authors":"E. Dagiene","doi":"10.3846/EST.2011.13","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.3846/EST.2011.13","url":null,"abstract":"More than a decade ago, the academic community has started the continuously esca­lating debate trying to ascertain whether commercial databases sufficiently reflect researcher ac­tivities undertaken in various fields of science and whether publications outside such databases were worthless. These long discussions gave rise to rapidly developing and improving open access databases, such as Google Scholar , Scirus , Microsoft Academic Search and etc. The article presents a research that aims to compare scientometric indicators on researchers of different scientific fields derived from free access databases with those supplied by the globally recognised Web of Science , and to ascertain the differences between the two. With consent of well-known Lithuanian profes­sors, habilitated doctors, their indicators were collected and presented in this article. The afore­mentioned professors represent four scientific fields: educology, physics, engineering and economi­cs. As the research revealed that some Lithuanian physicists have same family names as well as first names, indicators of a young doctor of physics were supplied for comparison. The article compares the researcher indicators collected from the Web of Science with those retrieved with the help of Pu­blish or Perish software. This free access and easy to install software draws on Google Scholar data to calculate and produce a wealth of indicators, such as: the number of papers; variety of citations: average per year, per author and etc.; h -index and its variations, and etc. According to creator of Publish or Perish software Anne-Wil Harzing, all these indicators are useful for researchers as they help choosing the best way to present dissemination of their papers and ideas as well as input into development of global science, required while submitting various applications and etc. Results of the research confirmed the broadly used argument that more papers in the field of social sciences can be found with the help of Google Scholar rather than Web of Science , consequently, indicators produced by Publish or Perish are better. {"title":"Juozas Eretas (Joseph Ehret): darbai Lietuvai","authors":"Aldona Vasiliauskienė","doi":"10.3846/EST.2011.07","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.3846/EST.2011.07","url":null,"abstract":"Juozas Eretas (Joseph Ehret) (18 October 1896 – 13 March 1984) was an eminent scholar of Lithuania and Switzerland as well as a doctor of Philosophy. He arrived in Lithuania in autumn 1919 under an obligation to his dying Lithuanian friend Mykolas Asmys who had asked him to do something for him in Lithuania. In 1920, he initiated the establishment of the ELTA (the Lithuanian Agency of Telegrams of Eretas). Once he received the Lithuanian citizenship, he accomplished valuable work aimed at the strengthening of the state of Lithuania. J. Eretas voluntarily joined the Lithuanian military service (1920); This act encouraged Lithuanian intelligentsia to follow in his footsteps. The contribution of professor Eretas to the foundation of the University of Lithuania (named after Vytautas Magnus in 1930) is remarkable. He was appointed to a professorship of the university and performed his professorial duties during 1922–1940 (with an interval from 1931–1932 when he was dismissed from the office). Eretas was one of the founders of the Lithuanian Catholic Academy of Science (LKMA). When the Catholic Academy was established in 1922, he became its active member. He presented papers at its conferences, edited the I-III volumes of the transactions of the LKMA Conferences. At the Second Conference of the LKMA (1936), he was elected academician and became honorary member while in emigration (1975). Eretas was a literary historian and an author of numerous important writings such as “Bethoven’s youth” (1927), “Henrich Seuse” (1929), “Meister Eckehart” (1930), “Jonas Tauleris” (1930). He was the first to offer a comprehensive and thorough presentation of German literature in Lithuanian: “The history of German literature” (1931, Vol. I), “Young Goethe” (1933) and others. He was known as a brilliant publicist for his prolific publications in the press and his editorials to the “XX amžius” (The 20th Century) weekly on the outbreak of the war in Spain, signed by the pen-name “Hispanus”. Eretas was a well-known founder and editor of newspapers (for temperance, sport and the Catholic rural youth). Back in Switzerland, he was elected honorary member of the Lithuanian writers’ Union (USA). The public activity of Eretas was just as outstanding. He headed the Catholic rural youth union “Pavasaris” (Spring) (1922–1928), in 1928, he was elected as its honorary president. He was one of the founders of the “Pavasaris” folk university (1925) and the patron of the literary association “Satrija” for the students of the ateitininkai movement. Much worthy work was done by him in the fields of temperance and sports. He was among the founders of the Gymnastics and Sports Federation of Lithuania (LGSF) (1922) and one of the organizers of the Sports League of Lithuania (1923). However, this phenomenon combines different experiences and remains contradictory. The meaning centre of descriptive considerations has shifted from linguistic to cultural issues. Therefore, periodical publications – as a dialogic and at the same time politically engaged critical text – is of particular importance within the context of the cultural studies of the fourth decade of the 20th century. The object of the study is to reveal the premises of intercultural communication as an urgent problem as well as remind of the peculiarities of linguistic differentiation. The aim of the research is to analyse the especially different context of Lithuanian–Polish intercultural cooperation, taking into account different conceptions of the cited authors and spotlighting the most characteristic features of national and linguistic identity. One conclusion becomes apparent while summing up all of the facts, i.e. the intercultural dialogue is possible because of the integral processes, taking place within the nation. The synthesis of different cultures determines frankness of the intercultural dialogue. Taking into account theory on cultural synthesis by Salkauskis, it could be affirmed that co-ordination of different cultures has influence on the consolidation of the nation and leads towards modernization of the social tradition. The article deals with the issue of linguistic and cultural junction spreading beyond Polish and Lithuanian cultural traditions. One of the main peculiarities of the multicultural attitude is the universal understanding of the Lithuanian–Polish culture. {"title":"Applied Studies in Klaipėda in 1934–1939: Aspects of Local Specialization","authors":"Romualdas Juzefovičius","doi":"10.3846/EST.2011.04","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.3846/EST.2011.04","url":null,"abstract":"Based on the research of archival and published sources, the article analyses the conditions of organisation of studies at the Republic’s Pedagogical and Commerce Institutes in Klaipėda, their structure and intentions of local vocational specialization, and attempts to assess the impact of higher education on the expression of social and cultural identities of the Lithuanian intelligentsia in the region, from the beginning of the process of the establishment of the Institutes in 1934 up to their relocation from Klaipėda in 1939. Data presented in the article provides that the total duration of training courses in the Institutes as well as the volumes of courses differed; however the principles of curricula content formation had much in common: the combination of theoretical and practical disciplines was sufficiently rational, the curricula covered vocational specialization opportunities and facilitated the relationship between the studies and the environment. Particular focus in the area of planning and organisation of studies was given to the organization of educational practices and interaction with Lithuanian entrepreneurs of Klaipėda as well as strengthening of communities. This created assumptions for the development of professional as well as cultural socialization skills of graduates. Graduates acquired necessary practical skills, some successfully adapted and engaged in vocational activities within companies and institutions of the region of Klaipėda, others establishing a new businesses as well as sought for possibilities to associate themselves with the Lithuanian intelligentsia in the region and learned the specifics of its activities. Activities of the academic community of Klaipėda created the preconditions for the development of social and cultural expression and interaction of Lithuanian intelligentsia with the entire Lithuania. {"title":"The Expression of Catholic Social Thought in Kaunas Diocese (Beginning of the XX Century)","authors":"V. Pruskus","doi":"10.3846/EST.2011.06","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.3846/EST.2011.06","url":null,"abstract":"The article analyses the circumstances and characteristics of the expression of the Catholic social thought in Kaunas Diocese. The Catholic intellectual and organizational forces and their main activity trends as well as results are discussed with reference to the literature and the critical analysis of historical sources. It is demonstrated that Catholic sociologists of Kaunas Diocese were united by one common feature – efforts to harmonize social theory with practice. While analyzing social issues and, especially, proposing the solution to, they relied not only on theory but also on sobriety and historic wisdom of the nation. Consequently, it is possible to conclude that their theoretical considerations, first of all, had to ground social activity. On the other hand, subjective indicators also influenced the situation. Those were the people with wide interests who expressed themselves in various spheres of scientific and social life. Some of them tried to analyse social problems theoretically, however they constantly watched them through concrete social phenomena and realia (A. Kaupas, S. Sultė). Others expressed themselves not only in the sociological sphere but also in pedagogical, psychological, philosophical and economic areas (A. Jakstas-Dambrauskas, J. Matulaitis, M. Reinys, K. Paltarokas, F. Kemėsis). Yet another group founded societies, supported consumer companies and took an active part in their activity (K. Olsauskas, P. Janusevicius, M. Krupavicius, J. Vailokaitis). Despite of the variety of social interests, Catholic sociologists were united by the common goal: while developing a regular critical viewpoint to social phenomena in order to serve Lithuania and its people, they fostered the hope for restoration of the independence and provided for the independent and responsible activity. Asherov","doi":"10.3846/EST.2010.23","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.3846/EST.2010.23","url":null,"abstract":"In accordance with the generations of computers and generations of programming languages it is possible to select the certain, protracted enough periods, characterized by pretty stable technological computational processes, so-called generations of information technologies. It is presently possible to talk about six generations of information technologies. Dialectical contradiction between two of their functions is the source of development of the information-computer systems: the function of the data processing and function of communication. The function of the data processing will be realized actually by computers, function of communication by the personnel, peripheral units and communication network (data communications). A production-economic situation in different periods makes actual the first or second function and causes growth of the productivity and intellectual possibilities of the centre of data (in particular, computers) processing or growth of communications possibilities of the periphery accordingly. Growing necessities in treatment of information jointly with the update and complication of role of man make actual the new tasks of description, estimation, optimization of the system of «human being–technique–environment». The expounded models can be useful for the choice of maintenance of educational material at ergonometric preparation of specialists.
