First, the author proves that the systematization of the concept of acceleration begins with I. Newton’s works “Gravia in Trochoide Descendentia” (ca. 1670) and PRINCIPIA but not, as the historians of mechanics have traditionally claimed, with lectures in physical mechanics by J. V. Poncelet in the years 1838–1848. Famous LEX II in I. Newton’s PRINCIPIA can only be regarded as a true proposition if the Newtonian term “vis motrix impressa” means not force itself, but rather the impulse of the force. If the above-named term is interpreted as the habitual physical force, LEX II is false as a physical proposition. {"title":"Juozas Eretas (Joseph Ehret): veikla Lietuvai, sugrįžus į Gimtinę","authors":"Aldona Vasiliauskienė","doi":"10.3846/EST.2012.05","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.3846/EST.2012.05","url":null,"abstract":"The article reviews the life and activities of Joseph Ehret (18/10/1856–13/3/1984) after his return home to Switzerland. During the years 1919 through 1940 he worked in Lithuania, his second motherland, gained its citizenship, but was forced to leave it by the Soviet occupants. Having returned home, prof. J. Eretas proceeded with his Lithuanian activities which unfolded in his public and academic endeavours. He joined the activities of the Lithuanian immigrant community in Switzerland. In 1954 he was entrusted with the responsibilities of a member of the honorary court. Witnessing his wife Ona Jakaitytė’s inability to put down roots in Switzerland and her homesickness, he sought to create the Lithuanian atmosphere in their home, meaning only the Lithuanian language was spoken in his so much treasured family and while away from home, the children used to write letters to their parents only in Lithuanian. Joseph Ehret’ affection for Lithuania and the reasons why he had moved away were disclosed by him in his public lectures in which he tirelessly raised the issue of Lithuania’s freedom. He successfully refuted the prevalent opinion in Switzerland that the Lithuanian refugees were committed followers of Hitler because they had run away from the “kind uncle” Stalin. The professor’s articles published in foreign languages in various magazines consolidated Lithuania’s image in the West that the occupied country will be free in the future. Concerned about the fate of the Lithuanian state and the Lithuanian exile, Joseph Ehret wrote “A Trilogy of Exile”, a study about the lost Balts, Baltic nations and their fate, about the Lithuanian language and its archaic wealth. The study presented his vision of Lithuania’s way out of this situation. Joseph Ehret was an academician of the Lithuanian Catholic Academy of Science (1936) and its honorary member (1979). He stood at the starting point of the academy’s revival in the West (Roma). His lecture on Stasys Salkauskis acted as a mediator between Vladimir Solovyov’s philosophy and the philosophical trends of the West and contributed to the LKMA’s emergence on the international level. Resorting to his numerous reminiscences, in his three monographs he immortalized the celebrated members of the Catholic academy. He viewed the academic, political and cultural life of the country and the nation through the distinguished persons of Lithuania such as Stasys Salkauskis, Kazys Pakstas and Prelate Pranciskus Juras. The reminiscences of Dr Vaclovas Dargužas (6/1/1920 – 22/10/2009) and Julija Eretaite – Kollar, daughter of the professor, included in the article, are offered to the academic public for the first time. Presented for the first time, the bibliography of publications about Joseph Ehret in Lithuania will serve as an important source for the investigators considering the ways and forms of perpetuating the professor’s memory. The work, compiled by bibliographers Kulikauskienė and Vitkauskienė was the first attempt ever to register references not only by the famous scholar, but also publications about him and his creative work in one edition. The index was compiled using the works by F. Recke, K. Napiersky, A. Žvironas, J. Stradins, J. A. Krikstopaitis, also the holdings of the major libraries in Lithuania. A biography of T. Grothuss with an extensive list of literature was published by J. A. Krikstopaitis (2005). A bibliographical work to register all information about T. Grothuss including a list of important dates in his life and his scientific activities as well as the list of dates commemorating the name of T. {"title":"Research of Some Aspects of Relation Between Ecology and Energy Efficiency In Tradtional Architecture","authors":"Andrius Keizikas, Aistė Andriušytė, Eglė Šiožinytė","doi":"10.3846/EST.2012.04","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.3846/EST.2012.04","url":null,"abstract":"The evolution of traditional buildings reflects the uninterrupted development and the assimilation of the most worked out structural and architectural solutions. The new requirements of the EU regulations (from 2020 all new buildings must meet the requirement of almost zero-energy level) as well as applicable laws in Lithuania (the Lithuanian building regulations STR), however, set strict requirements which are difficult to apply to the traditional architecture.. On the other hand, not all measures aimed at building energy efficiency are compatible with the concept of ecology (usually attributable to the traditional architecture). Due to the aforementioned confrontation, the purpose of this research is to use the comparative analysis method to examine some of the measures determining energy efficiency of a building and the rationality of these measures in the context of building’s lifecycle (which consists of construction, operation and demolition stages). One of the tested measures in this issue is the improvement of thermal properties of external envelope’s elements to meet the requirements of existing building regulations (according STR2.05.01: 2005). The research examines the ability of the improved thermal resistance of traditional buildings’ external envelope in assessing the benefits during the operation stage. The rationality is determined by comparing the energy savings during fifty-year-long lifespan (STR2.01.09: 2005) with the energy needed to produce the material (i.e. embodied energy). After comparing several different thermal insulation materials, e.g. mineral wool, EPS panels, straw insulation, the best solution is found. Besides the aforementioned, this research examines some principles of “passive design” applied in traditional buildings of various Lithuanian ethnographic regions. Four buildings varying in size, plan configuration, external envelope area, etc. were analyzed: “Viengale Pirkia” and “Dvigale Pirkia” from Dzūkija, “Troba” and “Kryžiavinis” houses from Žemaitija. The research is based on the methodology of evaluation of geometric efficiency by Parasonis, Keizikas et al . (2012a, b). The findings allow us to make the following conclusions: 1. The research has indicated that the energy savings of insulated buildings (per lifetime period) are several times bigger than the energy needed to produce the applied insulation materials. 2. Based on the ratio of embodied energy and saved energy of tested materials, the research shows that the straw is the most rational insulation. It is also characterized as being a natural material as well as eliminating the additional energy inputs for recycling. However, it requires larger structures capable to withstand higher loads. 3. The research of geometric parameters of traditional houses has shown that the usage envelopes of “Troba” and “Kryžiavinis” houses is most efficient: “Troba” because of the most compact volume and “Kryžiavinis” because of the largest hosted floor area. 4. Basically, DPs were without rights; they had no rights to free work and movement. Antebellum independent Lithuania’s education experience was applied at the maximum, in 1945-1950 under heavy and extraordinarily conditions Lithuanian inhabitants in West Germany restored independence for Lithuania’s secondary and higher education systems and created opportunities to the youth to pursue the professional background in varying formal education establishments (gymnasium, profession school, higher education institutions ) and in non-formal (different courses) Lithuanian profession training establishments. Through these establishments the Lithuanian youth had opportunity to obtain wanted profession, to integrate with the foreign community, whereas the profession training establishments, such as institutions, educated young generation and supported nationally, by making the opportunity to the Lithuanians to learn in their native language.
