Because of the intrinsic distributed parameter nature of this system, its dynamics are described by a set of partial differential equations (PDE) that cannot be directly used for the controller design. Therefore, the progress of the plasma control during the last two decades has been determined, on the one hand, by the capacity of the process experts to generate more and more reliable ordinary differential equations (ODE) approximate models of these dynamics, and, on the other hand, by the ability of the control specialists to use these models as a basis for model-based control design. In this paper we present a survey of the various approximate models proposed in the literature, focusing on the simplifying assumptions adopted and the controllers proposed. Prior to the literature survey we give an introduction and illustrate a general form of the PDE describing the plasma dynamics.","PeriodicalId":108537,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2000. In this modeling approach, the minimal state-space representation of the overall system is generated automatically and updated dynamically based upon the topological state of the system. However, due to the changing topology, simulation of a switched circuit using the ASMG requires the concatenation of solutions to the initial value problems (IVPs) corresponding to the time intervals between commutations. In this paper, a transformation of state variables is derived such that the states are continuous throughout the simulation process. This feature eliminates the need to re-initialize the ODE solver. The continuous state algorithm is verified on a high-pulse-count power supply and sets the stage for state-space averaging and system-level analysis of switched circuits.","PeriodicalId":108537,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2000. Along with the system model formulated in Hamilton's canonical form the algorithm uses information about a required potential energy and a dissipative term. The control action is the sum of the gradient of the potential energy and the dissipative force. It is shown that this control law makes the system uniformly and asymptotically stable to the desired reference point. Three problems are addressed in the paper: spacecraft stabilization in the inertial frame; libration damping with the use of electromagnetic coils; and a slew maneuver with an additional objective of avoiding undesirable regions, such as causing blindness to optical sensors.","PeriodicalId":108537,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2000. The proposed architecture is based on the hardware-efficient pipelined architecture for the LMS adaptive filter and subband methodology, and it can achieve good convergence characteristics, short latency and high throughput simultaneously without adaptation delays. In addition, it maintains the advantage of the normalised LMS, i.e., the step size assures that the convergence rate is determined automatically. Computer simulation results confirm that the proposed architecture achieves satisfied convergence rate identical to those of the normalised LMS in frequency-domain.","PeriodicalId":108537,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2000. Chattering is a common problem in VSC implementation. It is generally reduced using a boundary layer concept which has a trade-off between chattering and tracking error. Thus, it would be better if boundary layer can adapt itself to an appropriate value as proposed by Bekit et al. (1998). However, the method requires a linear parametrized model of robot which is difficult to find for multiple-joint robot arm. In this paper, time-varying boundary layer is developed so that the model is no longer needed. As shown in the simulation results, the proposed method can reduce chattering and still has a small error at steady state.","PeriodicalId":108537,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2000. The tail-controlled missile in the cruciform fin configuration is modelled as a six-order quasi-linear parameter-varying system. This nonlinear model is obtained from the Taylor linearised model of the lateral and longitudinal motions by including explicit dependence of the aerodynamic derivatives on a state and external parameters. The autopilot design is based on input-output pseudo-linearisation, which is the restriction of input-output feedback linearisation to the set of equilibria of the nonlinear model. The design makes Taylor linearisation of the closed-loop system independent of the choice of equilibria. Simulations for constant lateral acceleration demands show good tracking with fast response time. Parametric stability margins for uncertainty in the controller parameters and aerodynamic derivatives are analysed using quadratic Lyapunov approach.","PeriodicalId":108537,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2000. Besides, modeling errors and non-linear loads with unmodeled dynamics can degrade the controller performance resulting in a poor transient response and instability. A robust model reference adaptive controller (RMRAC) for three-phase uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) is presented. The three-phase system model is rewritten, using a synchronous transformation in dq coordinates, and a RMRAC controller is used to assure system robustness and performance. Simulation and experimental results are used to show the closed-loop system robustness and performance under several operation conditions.","PeriodicalId":108537,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2000. The motion controller generates two analog commands to the current tracking amplifier and the three phase currents are reproduced at the motor terminals. However, DC offsets are always present at the motor terminals due to the digital to analog converter offsets of the motion controller and the current sensor offsets of the current tracking amplifier. These current offsets generate sinusoidal torque disturbance and hence produce velocity ripples. Such a disturbance cannot be rejected by using a simple PI control. Furthermore, the current offsets drift with time and temperature so that an off-line compensation does not work satisfactorily. In this paper, a robust 2-DOF regulator containing the internal model of the sinusoidal disturbance is proposed to accomplish disturbance rejection and constant speed tracking.","PeriodicalId":108537,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2000. However, they pose a more difficult control problem because the appropriate setpoint for the pump speed depends on preload and afterload, which vary with time. The pump should be run as fast as possible to maximize cardiac output, but ventricular suction can occur when the device attempts to pump more blood than is available. Suction must be detected quickly and the pump speed reduced before suction damages the heart. In many cases, control algorithms must rely on limited or no measurement of hemodynamic variables. We describe a method for suction detection and pump speed control based only on measurements of pump current, speed, and, when available, pump flow. Four heuristic indices that can detect suction are used, and the data are fused to decide whether suction is present If suction is present, speed is immediately reduced. If suction is not present, the indices are used as inputs to a fuzzy controller to adjust the pump speed so that the pump is operating just below the speed that induces suction. Data fusion techniques for suction detection based on Bayesian, fuzzy logic and Dempster-Shafer theory were evaluated. Fusion techniques based on fuzzy logic and Dempster-Shafer theory provide a measure of uncertainty in the fused result. This uncertainty measure can be used in the control process, and it can also be used to identify faults in pump operation.","PeriodicalId":108537,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2000.
