A solution is then to develop an adaptive version of the predictive controller for systems with parametric disturbances. This paper presents a direct version of adaptive generalized predictive control, based on the work of Wang and Henriksen. The algorithm is rewritten in an original form minimizing a performance index, using a least-squares type strategy for the controller parameter online identification, including a conditional updating test in the adaptation loop. An application of this structure to an engine drive with an automatic gear box with continuous variations of the reduction ratio is finally developed. The model of this system is derived as a starting point from the well-known two-masses problem. In this study, only the engine speed is measured, the acceleration (variable to be controlled) remains not measurable.","PeriodicalId":108537,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2000. More recently, they have been used for fibre fractionation to produce pulp that is more uniform and of higher quality. Careful control is required for the safe operation of pressure screens, and for providing the required flows and level of cleanliness without failure. This is particularly important in fibre fractionation where optimal separation occurs when screens are operated as close as possible to the failure limit. Current control strategies are based on linear univariate control techniques. However, because the process is nonlinear and strongly coupled, univariate linear controllers are likely to perform very poorly when tight control is required. This kind of control requires an accurate model of the system. We describe a nonlinear dynamic model of pressure screens. Different methods were used to estimate the unknown parameters of the model, which was then validated against real data. Furthermore, we propose a simple nonlinear multivariate control strategy based on a static nonlinear model. For performance evaluation, we compare a conventional control strategy to the proposed strategy in simulation, and in pilot plant experiments.","PeriodicalId":108537,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2000. In the proposed scheme, inclinometer data are used to compensate for the gyro drift due to roll/pitch perturbation of the vehicle while moving on the rough terrain. Providing independent information about the rotation (yaw) of the vehicle, clino-gyro is used to correct differential odometry adversely affected by the wheel slippage. Position estimation using this technique can be improved significantly, however for the long term applications it still suffers from the drifts of the gyro and translational components of wheel skidding. Fusing this enhanced odometry with the data from environmental sensors (sonars, laser range finder) through Kalman filter-type procedure a reliable positioning can be obtained. This technique has been implemented on-board of an experimental skid-steered vehicle. Obtained precision is sufficient for navigation in underground mining drifts. For open-pit mining applications further improvements can be obtained by fusing proposed localization algorithm with GPS data.","PeriodicalId":108537,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2000. In order to make the fault feature in a residual clearer and more recognizable, the residual is prolonged by using a multi-scale wavelet transform. Then the prolonged residual is sent to a neural network, which is used as an intelligent classifier. After being trained properly, the neural network can exactly detect and diagnose smaller faults than those detected by using the existing methods. The most important advantage of the method is that the probability of false alarm and miss alarm can be suppressed at the same time by training the neural network online and off-line alternately. Although the Kalman filter-based method is taken as an example, it can be used as a general combined method for control system fault detection and diagnosis.","PeriodicalId":108537,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2000. Artificial neural networks (ANN) help us choose a proper sliding surface, which is time-varying. The weights of the ANN are changed according to an adaptive algorithm to control the system state to hit a user-defined sliding surface and then slide along it. The input parameters to the ANN are chosen as delayed outputs of the sliding mode controller and delayed output of the plant. The sliding surface is adapted such that convergence towards the path to be followed is guaranteed. A non-holonomic mobile robot as a practical example for the application of this control system is considered.","PeriodicalId":108537,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2000. In steady state, all currents and voltages will be periodic with cycle time corresponding to the frequency of the voltage source. If the network is linear, all signals are sinusoidal and the network is solved using traditional methods. If the network contains components with nonlinear or switching dynamics, iterative methods based on harmonic balance are often required to obtain the periodic steady state solution. By linearization of the system around the periodic solution, a linear time periodic model is obtained. This can be used as a local description of the system in the neighborhood of the periodic solution. If only periodic signals are considered, a linearized model can be represented by a matrix, called the harmonic transfer matrix (HTM). The method is applied to the motor side of a modern inverter train. Via the HTM, the steady state response to constant or periodic disturbances or changes in reference values can be obtained.","PeriodicalId":108537,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2000. In this paper, an approach for minimum time trajectory generation of high-rise elevators is presented. It is shown that for systems characterized by linear differential equations, subject to linear or nonlinear inequalities, the time-optimal trajectory possesses a special property that at least one constraint is always active. This property is exploited to get an efficient algorithm for minimum-time solutions. Through simple dynamic models of the elevator using first principles of mechanics, it is shown that for both linear and nonlinear constraints, demands for near real-time trajectory planning can be met.","PeriodicalId":108537,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2000.
