Due to the nonlinear nature of the simulation, the implementation and tuning of the algorithms is substantially more complicated than in the case of linear simulations. However, the well tuned FDI-ARC achieves excellent performance despite severe flight-critical variations in the aircraft dynamics. This is the result of combining judiciously many advanced control techniques, including inverse dynamics control law, multiple models, switching and tuning, stable adaptive observers and controllers, high-gain and variable-structure observer terms, and gain scheduled controllers and adaptive gains for the estimation of the wing damage level.","PeriodicalId":108537,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2000. In nonlinear control application, the signal may be from measurement and/or from composite states. It may be polluted by measurement noise or disturbance which are not necessarily white and thus cannot be addressed in a transfer function approach. Thus it may not be theoretically and/or practically differentiable or its numerical derivative leads to a bad result. The new viewpoint for integral filters are based on the solution of an inverse Taylor series problem. Several models are proposed and their existence and stability are primarily considered. Simulation results are used to show dynamic properties of these filters. An example for the application of these filters in multi-surface dynamic backstepping sliding mode control design of a nonlinear system with unmatched uncertainties is given.","PeriodicalId":108537,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2000. The design of the controller is based on a linearized, validated model of the plasma confined in the tokamak. The plant is MIMO and the various outputs are strongly coupled. Moreover the plant is open-loop unstable. The scope of the controller is to stabilize the plasma and to guarantee some closed-loop performance in terms of decoupling among the plant outputs. The proposed controller is composed of two nested loops: one is devoted to the vertical stabilization, the other, designed using the H/sup /spl infin// technique, guarantees the control of the plasma current and of the plasma shape. After massive simulations, this controller was successfully tested on the plant. The experimental results show a significant improvement of the performance with respect to those obtained with a PID MIMO controller, that was used before on the plant.","PeriodicalId":108537,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2000. In order to design a suitable learning operator, knowledge about the plant's dynamical behaviour is needed which implies that a system model has to be set up. It is expedient to acquire a state space model of the plant using identification methods. Here we deal especially with the case, that a linear model represents system dynamics inadequately. We start with a nonlinear model and linearize the system along the current trajectory, thus obtaining a linear time variant model. Using this as the basis, we develop methods for identification and control of the nonlinear process. Experimental results show that a good system model is also useful to perform a pre-training for the ILC; this is especially interesting in case large deviations from a desired system output trajectory must be avoided. The presented algorithms have been implemented and tested experimentally with a real-life nonlinear processing plant.","PeriodicalId":108537,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2000. This is achieved by the construction of a simple and intuitive criterion using integral inequality involving the output function and modified detectability conditions. The well-known \"LaSalle invariance principle\" is shown to be deduced from the proposed approach when a Lyapunov function is given to the applied systems. A similar criterion, the so-called \"integral invariance principle\", was proposed by Byrnes and Martin (1995) for nonlinear time-invariant systems. However, in general, these two approaches cannot be applied to time-varying systems directly. The proposed scheme can be viewed as an extension of the integral invariance principle for time-invariant systems to time-varying systems. Such extension is non-trivial and can be used in various research areas, such as adaptive control, tracking control and the control of driftless systems. Applications to the global tracking control of four-wheeled mobile robots are given to demonstrate the feasibility and validity of the proposed approach.","PeriodicalId":108537,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2000. Based on the structural property of linear motors, some simple models with unknown weights are used to approximate the force ripple as well as other reproducible nonlinearities, such as friction. The unknown weights are adjusted online via certain parameter adaptation law to achieve an improved model compensation. The model approximation error as well as lumped disturbance are handled via certain robust control law to achieve a guaranteed robust performance. Experimental results are obtained for the motion control of an iron core linear motor and verify the high performance of the proposed scheme.","PeriodicalId":108537,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2000. As part of the boiler start-up process, water wall outlet water/steam temperature ramps from ambient temperature up to about 785/spl deg/F. At 550/spl deg/F and above, temperature change exhibits strong nonlinear behavior with respect to energy input. Long time delay (especially for a coal-fired unit) and other operating constraints bring additional difficulties for automatic control. To better improve the start-up water wall steam temperature control, a dynamic model-based control approach is proposed. A feedforward control profile is computed first based on an optimization criterion subject to model dynamics and operating constraints. A feedback controller is then designed separately to correct any uncertainties (e.g., fuel type variation). A simulation study demonstrates the model-based and systematically designed control scheme reduces temperature ramp-up time and avoids undesirable temperature overshoot during the entire process.","PeriodicalId":108537,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2000. Stereolithography (STL) is a rapid prototyping technique that allows us to quickly produce physical prototypes with the important benefit of reducing the time-to-market. The resulting design cost will be decreased considerably. Usually it has only an average precision of about 200 /spl mu/m and the machines are built of particularly expensive components. The paper presents an approach for the integration of commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components with a PCI bus digital signal processor board for complete control of a highly precise microstereolithography machine. Two scanners and one acoustooptical modulator that are directly controlled by the DSP realize the deflection and switching of the laser beam. The main goal is to ensure real-time data flow throughout the whole process of exposure so that no missing coordinates or \"hot spots\" occur. During the development, we focused on the use of standard programming languages like C and C++, standard operating systems like Windows NT and hardware components for the well-introduced PCI bus. These endeavors lead to our prototype of a microstereolithographry machine that is suitable for the growing needs of the microsystem technology industry.","PeriodicalId":108537,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2000.
