In deregulated power systems private generating stations are encouraged to add new generations. Finding the appropriate location of new generator to be installed can be obtained by running repeated power flows, carrying system studies like analyzing the voltage profile, voltage stability, loss analysis etc. In this paper a new methodology is proposed which will mainly consider the existing network topology into account. A concept of T-index is introduced in this paper, which considers the electrical distances between generator and load nodes. This index is used for ranking significant new generation expansion locations and also indicates the amount of permissible generations that can be installed at these new locations. This concept facilitates for the medium and long term planning of power generation expansions within the available transmission corridors. In the proposed fuzzy expert system, generator speed deviation and acceleration are chosen as input signals to fuzzy logic power system stabilizer. In this approach gains, centers of membership functions and the parameters of the fuzzy logic controllers have been tuned using genetic algorithm. Incorporation of GA in the design of fuzzy logic power system stabilizer will add an intelligent dimension to the stabilizer and significantly reduces computational time in the design process. The problem of selection of optimal parameters of fuzzy logic power system stabilizer is converted into an optimization problem and which is solved by genetic algorithm with the integral of squared time squared error (ISTSE) based objective function. To demonstrate the robustness of the proposed genetic based fuzzy logic power system stabilizer, simulation studies on multimachine system subjected to small perturbation and three-phase fault have been carried out. For the effective use of power system under the deregulated environment, it is important to make a fast and accurate evaluation of the maximum available transfer capability (ATC). Transient stability assessment by time domain simulation method is a time consuming process. A novel dynamic contingency screening method is discussed and critical contingencies are selected for the computation of dynamic ATC in order to reduce the computational time. The information about the ATC is to be continuously updated in real-time and made available to the market participants through open access same time information system (OASIS). On the basis of ATC, independent system operator (ISO) evaluates the transaction. Thus the ATC must be computed fast and accurately. In this paper ATC has been computed for real time applications using two different neural networks viz., i) back propagation algorithm (BPA) and ii) radial basis function (RBF) neural network. Their operation is based on impedance measurement at the relaying point, which can be affected by several factors. Continued demand for electricity energy leads to increase in the short circuit levels along the network, which itself causes new problems. One of the proposed solutions for this problem is the utilization of fault current limiter (FCL), which imposes further changes on the measured impedance at the relaying point. This paper presents the effects of resistive superconductor FCL, on the measured impedance at the relaying point. In addition to its limitation degree, its installation point also affects the measured impedance. Active power voltage control can be achieved using energy storage schemes or inter connectors. In this paper we propose variable frequency transformers (VFT) as an effective means of interconnecting synchronous or asynchronous regions to enhance wind penetration. It is shown that the steady state stability limits of the system are improved with VFT as inter connectors. At the same time, distributed generations from renewable resources are more and more widely used owing to the growing concern on environmental protection. In general, these generation units are connected to the utility grid by a power electronic interface, which has large potential to be utilized to incorporate the function of voltage sag mitigation. In this paper, two configurations of interconnect distributed generator systems to mitigate voltage sags are analyzed. The discrete vector control algorithm which incorporates both inner loop current controller and outer loop voltage controller is derived to control the compensation for both balanced and unbalanced dips.
