Hawera leaves' extract on Chlamydomonas reinhardtii by analyzing its chemical composition, genotoxic, mutagenic, and DNA damaging effects. \u0000GC/MS analysis of the methanol extract shows that alkaloids comprise about 23.93% of the total ion current (TIC). Considering the alkaloid pattern, lycorine is the major alkaloid (8.53% of TIC), followed by 6-epi-mesembrenol (4.59% of TIC), galanthamine (2.63% of TIC), and mesembrenone (2.01% of TIC). Other compounds in the extract are mono- and di-saccharides, organic acids, and fatty acids. \u0000Based on our experiments, both well-expressed genotoxic and DNA damaging potential of Narcissus cv. Hawera total leaves' extract was revealed for the first time. The most pronounced effect is obtained after the treatment with concentrations equal to or higher than 500 μg/ml. Cell survival decrease in a dose-dependent manner correlates with increased levels of induced DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) but does not correspond with statistically confirmed mutagenic action. A good correlation is obtained between the levels of DSBs induced and cell survival rate. \u0000Here, for the first time, experimental evidence that Narcissus cv. Hawera leaves' extract can cleave DNA of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii inducing DSBs was reported by us. Our finding could be considered a good reason for further investigation of its biocidal capacity on other test systems for the purposes of “green” practice.

A total of 2095 Enterobacterales isolates obtained from urine samples were included in the study. Identification of isolates was performed in the Vitek MS. The antimicrobial susceptibility of the isolates and detection of ESBL was determined using the Vitek 2 Compact. In 185 fosfomycin-resistant isolates, fosA3 and fosC2 genes were investigated by PCR. In addition, carbapenemase genes were investigated in carbapenem-resistant isolates. In 2095 Enterobacterales, 65.8% of the isolates were E. coli, and fosfomycin resistance was determined as 22%. ESBL production was defined as 36.5%, 58.1%, and 32.5% in all isolates, K. pneumoniae, and E. coli isolates, respectively. K. pneumoniae (56.2%) were the most frequently isolated bacteria among 185 fosfomycin-resistant Enterobacterales isolates. In these isolates, 66.95% were ESBL-producing Enterobacterales, and 35.7% were carbapenem-resistant isolates. According to the PCR results, two of the 185 Enterobacterales isolates were positive for the fosA3 gene, fosC2 gene was not detected. According to PCR for carbapenemase genes results with these isolates, blaOXA–48 positivity was 66.7%, and blaNDM positivity was 3%. blaKPC and blaVIM positivity could not be detected. In our study, the prevalence of fosA3 was 1.1%. The occurrence of fosA3 gene positivity in Enterobacterales isolates is important for the future treatment of UTIs.

The progression of DM is associated with long-term damage to macro- and micro-vascular body systems and causes serious health complications. Up to 40% of DM patients develop chronic kidney disease (CKD), mainly as a consequence of diabetic nephropathy (DN). Hence, strict glycemic control is recommended to slow down CKD progression. Hyperglycemia causes complications in diabetic patients through the glycation of various proteins. The interaction of glucose with the free NH2 groups of proteins results in the formation of the early glycation product fructosamine (FA). FA has a short half-life (1 to 2 weeks) and hence it has the potential of an early marker for glycemic control. Although long used in the clinical practice, the FA diagnostic and prognostic significance remains questionable. In this study, we tested the FA potential to serve as a glycemic marker in DM patients with DN. We found that DM patients have significantly higher serum FA levels than non-diabetics. Further, the serum FA level in diabetics correlates positively with the blood glucose concentration. Finally, the mean serum FA level was higher in DM patients with DN, compared to those without DN. These results establish FA as a promising marker for glycemic control in DN patients.

The administration of AlCl3 to rats resulted in decreased body weight, increased oxidative stress markers, hormonal depletion, apoptosis induction, and pro-inflammatory cell infiltration in the prostate tissue. Additionally, histopathological examination revealed various abnormalities. However, co-treatment with turmeric extract improved body weight, increased testosterone levels, reduced apoptosis, and mast cell infiltration. C. longa L. exhibited strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, highlighting its potential as a phytomedicine against reproductive disorders like prostatitis induced by Al exposure.

Forty male Wistar rats were divided into four groups: Control, DOX, TQ and DOX+TQ. DOX and DOX+TQ groups were injected with 3 mg/kg (i.p.) DOX for 4 weeks. TQ and DOX+TQ groups received 10 mg/kg TQ by gavage. Learning, locomotor activity, oxidative stress and inflammatory levels were evaluated. In behavioural experiments data, a significant decrease was observed in DOX group compared to Control group, while a significant increase was observed in DOX+TQ group compared to DOX group. Compared to the control group, TOC, IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α levels increased, while TAC level decreased in the DOX group. With TQ treatment, a significant decrease was observed in TOC, IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α levels in the TQ and DOX+TQ groups compared to the DOX group, while significant increases were observed in TAC level. In our study, DOX toxicity increased oxidative stress and neuroinflammation and caused learning and memory loss, while TQ decreased oxidative stress and neuroinflammation and improved learning and memory disorders.

A total of 64 patients, 46 with asymptomatic hyperuricemia and 18 with gout were included in this retrospective study. Renal biopsy findings, clinical and laboratory data were analyzed by using medical documentation. We did not find a significant difference in the distribution of chronic renal failure between the two groups. In the gout group, the proportion of patients with nephrolithiasis was higher (p <0.001), and the presence of erythrocyturia was more common (p = 0.047). The percentage of damaged glomeruli (p = 0.249) and the distribution of mesangial proliferation (p = 0.536) was similar in the groups. The proportion of patients with interstitial fibrosis > 50$% was significantly higher in the gout group (p = 0.032), but no difference was observed in the distribution of tubular atrophy > 50% (p = 0.183). In subjects not receiving urate-lowering therapy, serum uric acid levels were comparable in the different stages of tubular atrophy and interstitial fibrosis. We found that in both asymptomatic hyperuricemia and gout, there is a deposition of immune deposits subepithelially, subendothelially, in the mesangium and in the vessel walls. In gout, the kidneys are affected to a much greater extent. We consider that not only the increased serum uric acid is important, but also monosodium urate crystals deposited in the renal interstitium causing a chronic inflammatory process followed by fibrosis. We suggest that the activation of the innate immune system by soluble uric acid and crystals with the subsequent development of a proinflammatory state in the body has led to the activation of complement and deposition of immune deposits in the kidneys.

The three-dimensional coordinates of several soft-tissue landmarks on the orbits and face were obtained using a hand-held laser scanner (FastSCAN Cobra, Polhemus Inc, Colchester VT) in 95 healthy individuals (46 males and 49 females) of Bulgarian origin aged 21–30 years. From the landmarks outer and intercanthal widths, length of eye fissure, and height of the orbit were calculated and averaged for sex. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired t-test. Statistically significant difference was found in outer canthal width, both eyes fissure length, and orbital height between sexes. The differences in the inner canthal width did not reach statistical significance (p > 0.05). The data of the present study could serve as a quantitative characteristic of human orbital morphology. Forensic applications, evaluations of traumas, craniofacial alterations, and facial reconstruction may also benefit from the data.

Studying time distribution of aftershocks is important for understanding physics of the earthquake generation process. \u0000In the present study temporal pattern of aftershock sequence of the 2023 MW7.8 Turkey earthquake is analyzed. Because of the factors such as location and radiation pattern and the cumulative nature of building damage, aftershocks can cause more damage than the main shock. The temporal clustering of aftershocks is a dominant non-random element of the seismicity, so when the clusters are removed, the remaining activity can be modelled (as first approximation) as a Poisson process. \u0000On the assumption that aftershocks are distributed in time as a non-stationary Poisson process, we use the maximum likelihood method for estimating the parameters (K, c and p) of the modified Omori formula. For testing the goodness of fit between the aftershock occurrence and different statistical models, a transformation from the time scale t to a frequency-linearized time scale τ is applied. Akaike's information criteria is used to select the best model for the temporal distribution of aftershocks. \u0000It has been found that temporal distribution of the 2023 Turkey earthquake aftershocks is dominated by the classic power law decay in time and suggests the existence of secondary aftershock activity.

Changes in masticatory structures are likely to cause significant change in both children's and adult's diet. The aim of this study is to examine the occlusion and the intake of macronutrients in children who have undergone dental treatment and restoration of the teeth affected by caries and its complications with different types of aesthetic crowns. \u0000The study included 103 children, which are prosthetically treated with crown structures and divided into four age groups. The restoration of the occlusal balance after the completion of the prosthetic treatment was established by means of a new generation of digital recording system (OccluSense by Bausch, Germany). A 24-hour diary on consumed foods and liquids was taken from children and their parents. Data is analyzed and processed statistically. \u0000The obtained results in all studied diagrams showed an increase in the occlusal forces bilaterally in the distal areas of the dentition in the anterior-posterior direction. Protein and carbohydrate intake by the tested children corresponded to the recommended range of 15.2±3.7 E% and 46.6±7.8 E%. Increased fat intake of 38.1±7.5 E%, as well as fibre consumption below the recommended values (13.6 g to 18.6 g) have also been observed. \u0000Dental restoration of heavily damaged children's teeth using prosthetic dentistry methods provides the opportunity for a normal intake of the main macronutrients.
