Wheat bran, with its high carbohydrate content and weak lignocellulosic structure, is a promising feedstock for the formation of value-added products. Whey is a rich source of several nutrients that include carbohydrates, proteins and micronutrients. Valorization of whey by microbial strains for the cellulases production under solid state fermentation has been analyzed in the present investigation. The utilization of starch hydrolysates, bagasse, wheat straw and waste newspaper hydrolysates for cellulase production plays a significant role in environmental management strategies. This study presents a comprehensive bibliometric review of 247 articles retrieved from the Web of Science database using the PRISMA protocol. Employing Bibliometric and VOS viewer, the analysis identifies key trends in publication growth, author impact, institutional leadership, and thematic evolution. A distinct shift from conventional metal recovery to circular economy models is evident, with India, Australia, China, and Japan leading global contributions. The Indian Institute of Technology System and CSIR India emerge as key institutions, while top dissemination channels include Journal of Cleaner Production, Waste Management, and Journal of Environmental Management. In a novel contribution, this review integrates bibliometric mapping with quantitative performance benchmarking of decentralized micro-recycling systems (DMRS) for e-waste plastics. Comparative metrics demonstrate that DMRS can reduce transportation costs by up to 70 %, lower emissions by 60–70 %, and enhance job creation and energy efficiency marking them as viable, scalable alternatives to centralized systems. Five thematic clusters and four critical knowledge gaps are identified, calling for further research in durability standards, regulatory frameworks, and scalable deployment of DMRS within circular economy frameworks.

","PeriodicalId":101197,"journal":{"name":"Sustainable Chemistry One World","volume":"8 ","pages":"Article 100122"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"145267490","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Clean water production by innovative water treatment solution has high attention today to avoid water scarcity. Traditional methods often fall short in effectively removing complex organic contaminants, leading to the exploration of Advanced Oxidation Processes that make application of very reactive species, such as hydroxyl radicals, for pollutant degradation. Sulfur-based nanoparticles (SNPs) have emerged as promising catalysts in these processes owing to the distinctive qualities including large amount of surface area, reactivity, and environmental compatibility. This review examines the methodologies and processes integrating SNPs into AOPs for effluent wastewater treatment, detailing techniques such as Ultraviolet (UV) Irradiation, Infrared (IR) Radiation, Ultrasound, Thermal Methods, Acoustic Cavitation, Hydrodynamic Cavitation, Catalytic Processes, and High Voltage Discharge. While these approaches offer significant advantages in degrading recalcitrant pollutants, challenges such as scalability, energy consumption, and catalyst stability must be addressed. The potential for process optimization, integration with renewable energy, and the development of hybrid systems is also explored. The implementation of SNP-enhanced AOPs aligns with advancing wastewater treatment technologies, these approaches contribute to cleaner water, reduced environmental impact, and a more sustainable future.

","PeriodicalId":101197,"journal":{"name":"Sustainable Chemistry One World","volume":"8 ","pages":"Article 100139"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2025-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"145519686","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, we report the green synthesis of Magnesium Oxide Nanoparticles (MgO NPs) using an aqueous extract of S. potatorum seeds, providing a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to conventional chemical and physical synthesis routes. The formation and structural features of the MgO NPs were confirmed through Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), and Energy Dispersive X-ray Microanalysis (EDX). The biosynthesized MgO NPs exhibited potent, dose-dependent antimicrobial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, as well as fungal strains such as Candida albicans and Aspergillus flavus. In addition, they demonstrated significant antioxidant and anthelmintic activities. Furthermore, in environmental applications, the MgO NPs effectively catalyzed the photocatalytic degradation of the toxic dye bromocresol green, which is harmful to humans and animals. In environmental applications, the MgO NPs efficiently catalyzed the photocatalytic degradation of the toxic dye bromocresol green, which poses harmful effects to both humans and aquatic organisms. Kinetic evaluation revealed that the degradation followed pseudo-second-order kinetics (R² = 0.997), suggesting a bimolecular interaction between dye molecules and reactive sites on the nanoparticle surface. Although physical and chemical remediation methods have attracted a lot of attention, microbial degradation provides a more sustainable and environment-friendly solution. The present review gives a general review of microbial approaches in the remediation of PCBs from environment with an emphasis on the contribution that bacteria, fungi, algae, and enzymes have on the degradation of PCBs. Findings have shown that bacteria such as Burkholderia xenovorans and Pseudomonas spp. are aerobically highly active towards degradation with 100 % efficiencies followed by fungal strains (including (Thermoascus crustaceus, Thermothelomyces thermophila and Fusarium solani showing efficiencies in the range of 88.11–95.91 %) that use extracellular enzymes. The slower anaerobic dechlorinators, such as Dehalococcoides and Desulfitobacterium, however, are essential in catalyzing the start of the reaction of highly chlorinated congeners. Collectively, these findings emphasize that, in general, a single microbial group does not provide a universal solution. Instead, sequential or mixed methods like the anaerobic-aerobic microbial consortia, fungal-bacterial synergies and bioaugmentation are seen as the most promising pathways to scalable and effective PCB remediation. This study investigates the potential of Aphanamixis polystachya bark extract as a novel vegetable tanning agent in comparison with conventional mimosa tannin. Among the solvents tested, methanol yielded the highest extraction efficiency (30.75 ± 1.45 %). The extract showed a pH of 4.02 ± 0.15, moisture content of 4.14 ± 0.12 %, and total tannin content of 115.34 mg/g—comparable to mimosa (114.25 mg/g) and slightly lower than quebracho (129.96 mg/g). Condensed tannin content (23.7 ± 1.92 %) also fell within the reported range of reference tannins. FTIR analysis confirmed functional groups essential for collagen interaction, and UV-Vis spectroscopy revealed a characteristic peak at 280 nm, indicative of catechin and tannic acid-like compounds. Leather tanned with the extract showed a shrinkage temperature of 82.67 ± 0.57 °C, tensile strength of 250.35 ± 0.77 kg/cm², and elongation of 41.67 ± 1.03 %. It also outperformed mimosa in tear resistance, grain distension (8.5 mm), and fracture resistance (22.81 ± 1.39 kg). No surface cracks appeared after 50,000 dry flexing cycles.
