The maritime authorities thus wish to be able to announce their positions to the navigators, or to recover them. In the event of containers loss, the calculation of the trajectory enables to locate the dangerous area for navigation and to search for the containers. A numerical model has been developed and configured to provide a tool to forecast container drift at the sea. This paper summarises the key features of the model and presents four simulations in hindcast mode. Three cases are real losses (‘Churruca’, ‘Sherbro’ and tank containers), one is an experiment (Dourvarc’h).</p><p>A basic physic of the container has been implemented in the hydrodynamic code developed by Météo-France. This aspect constitutes a new approach in the prediction of objects drifting on the sea. We demonstrate by the analytical calculus and with the four studied cases that the immersed fraction initialised in the initial condition is a key parameter. The results have also shown the role of the wind direction and intensity on the trajectories simulations and the sensitivity of the model to the container buoyancy term.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":101181,"journal":{"name":"Spill Science & Technology Bulletin","volume":"7 5","pages":"Pages 279-288"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/S1353-2561(02)00075-0","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73136936","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Math. Model., 2001) presented a simple mathematical model for the confinement of oil spills, through the use of floating barriers such as booms, in an open ocean. In that paper, solutions with an indirect approach to solve the nonlinear integral equation system were discussed. In this paper, we shall present some recent results of the model obtained with a direct approach. This direct solution procedure enables us to quantitatively discuss the relationship among three important physical parameters, the Froude number, </span><em>F</em><span>, the barrier submergence depth, </span><em>l</em>, and the amount of oil trapped by the barrier, <em>q</em>. Although a further upgrading of our model to somehow incorporate the shear stress on the oil–water interface appears to be necessary, the complexity involved in such upgrading warrants the current model as an initial step in our modelling exercises of this complicated flow phenomenon.</p></div>","PeriodicalId":101181,"journal":{"name":"Spill Science & Technology Bulletin","volume":"7 5","pages":"Pages 249-255"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/S1353-2561(02)00042-7","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73077035","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The characterizations of individual aliphatic and aromatic compounds were based on gas chromatography and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analyses. The distribution of </span></span><em>n</em><span>-alkanes, polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and alkyl PAHs in the source oil and an oil slick collected 72 h after the spill were very similar. Major compositional changes observed in a weathered oiled sediment collected nine months after the spill from the shoreline at the spill location were consistent with previous studies. Molecular parameters of hopane and sterane biomarkers were very similar in the source oil, the spilled oil and the highly weathered oiled sediment. The similarity in biomarker compositions provided a strong evidence for a close genetic association of these samples. Ratios of C</span><sub>2</sub>-chrysenes/C<sub>2</sub>-phenanthrenes and C<sub>2</sub>-chrysenes/C<sub>2</sub>-dibenzothiophenes, the pregnane index (sum of the concentrations of C<sub>21</sub> and C<sub>22</sub> steranes over total concentration of steranes×100), and the tricyclic terpane index (sum of the concentrations of C<sub>19</sub> and C<sub>30</sub><span> tricyclic terpanes over total concentration of terpanes×100) clearly differentiated the refined oil products from crude oils. The composition of bilge oil indicated enrichment of late eluting steranes and terpanes and showed biomarker distributions similar to natural petroleum. The results further support that sterane and terpane biomarker analyses could differentiate oil samples of different sources even though they were sometimes indistinguishable in PAH and alkane compositions.</span></p></div>","PeriodicalId":101181,"journal":{"name":"Spill Science & Technology Bulletin","volume":"7 5","pages":"Pages 229-239"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1016/S1353-2561(02)00039-7","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74168091","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

More recently, the Norwegian Pollution Control Authority (SFT) has opened the door to the consideration of dispersant use in certain oil spill situations. This is in accordance with the “Principle of Internal Control” on what the Authorities focuses their regulations.
